Steve Perry likely still earns substantial income connected to Journey, but no reliable public source proves a fixed multimillion-dollar annual payment. His 1998 departure appears to have preserved certain economic interests in Journey’s catalog and, according to secondary reporting based on legal documents, a share of defined Journey touring earnings.
Short answer: Steve Perry probably still receives substantial money connected to Journey, but there is no reliable public record proving that he earns a specific amount—let alone “millions every year.” The strongest evidence is that his 1998 departure appears to have preserved economic interests in Journey’s catalog and, according to secondary reporting based on legal documents, a share of certain Journey touring earnings.
That distinction matters. Perry no longer performs with Journey, does not control the band’s name or trademark under the reported arrangement, and has denied plans to rejoin the group’s 2026 farewell tour. But leaving the stage is not the same as giving up every royalty, publishing interest, recording payment, or contractual participation tied to songs that remain among rock’s most commercially durable.
What actually happened when Steve Perry left Journey?
“Perry quit Journey in 1998” is broadly accurate, but it compresses a more complicated history.

- Perry first left Journey in 1987.
- He reunited with the band during the 1990s and recorded Trial by Fire.
- On May 8, 1998, he told GQ that a fax formally released him from his Journey and Sony contracts. Perry described himself as “a free man” at that point.
The contractual release ended his obligations to the band and label; it did not necessarily erase his economic connection to the music he had helped create. In the same interview, Perry discussed the Journey songs as a continuing shared interest among the writers. That is the key to understanding why his departure did not automatically end every possible Journey-related payment.
Why Journey’s catalog can keep generating money decades later
Perry was the principal vocalist during Journey’s most commercially successful period and was also involved in songwriting. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes the band’s dominant 1970s-and-1980s sound as being led by Neal Schon’s guitar and Perry’s vocals, and lists Perry among Journey’s inducted members.
The catalog’s commercial life has been unusually long. Journey’s official site has said that the 1988 Greatest Hits compilation had spent more than 1,300 weeks on Billboard’s Catalog Albums chart as of October 2021. The site also reported that the album had, at times, sold close to 500,000 copies worldwide in a year.
The RIAA database provides another measure of the catalog’s scale: as of January 26, 2024, it listed Journey’s Greatest Hits at 18-times platinum and “Don’t Stop Believin’” at 18-times platinum. Certifications measure qualifying units rather than Steve Perry’s personal cash receipts, but they demonstrate the size and persistence of the underlying demand.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” has also remained active outside ordinary album sales. The Library of Congress has documented the song’s continued presence in Journey set lists and sporting events, along with prominent uses in The Sopranos, Glee, and Rock of Ages. Those kinds of uses can create additional licensing, public-performance, or mechanical income for the relevant rights holders.
For listeners who want a physical snapshot of the Perry-era catalog discussed here, the Journey Greatest Hits CD is the most direct starting point. It is a listening recommendation, not evidence that any particular portion of its sales goes straight to Perry.
The reported 12.5% Journey deal
The most important explanation for Perry’s possible continuing Journey income comes from a 2020 iHeart report about legal documents connected to litigation within the band.

According to that report, Perry’s departure arrangement gave Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain full control of the Journey name and trademark. In exchange, Perry reportedly retained a share of future earnings from Journey albums and tours. The report described that touring share as 12.5% of net earnings from each Journey tour.

It would also be a mistake to turn the reported figure into a much broader claim.
| What the report says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|
| Perry reportedly receives 12.5% of certain Journey tour net earnings. | That Perry receives 12.5% of gross ticket sales, gross tour revenue, or all Journey revenue. |
| Schon and Cain reportedly received control of the Journey name and trademark. | That Perry owns the Journey trademark. |
| Perry reportedly retained a share of future album and touring earnings. | The exact percentage, formula, deductions, duration, or payment schedule for every category of income. |
The underlying agreement has not been reproduced publicly in the sources reviewed here. The iHeart account is secondary reporting based on legal documents, not a complete published copy of the contract. “Net earnings” is especially important: expenses, production costs, promoter arrangements, taxes, management, and other deductions may occur before a contractual percentage is calculated.
As a simple illustration—not an estimate of Journey’s actual finances—12.5% of $8 million in defined net earnings would equal $1 million. But without knowing the tour’s contractual definition of net earnings or the actual figures, that arithmetic cannot establish Perry’s annual income.
Where Perry’s continuing income may come from
1. Contractual Journey touring income
The reported touring provision is the clearest explanation for a post-departure Journey payday. Perry would not need to appear onstage if the agreement entitles him to a share of defined net earnings. At the same time, a payment based on net earnings can vary substantially from one tour to another and may be zero or much smaller than a headline gross suggests after expenses.
Current Journey tour grosses should therefore not be described as Perry’s personal earnings. At most, they may be relevant to a private contractual calculation whose terms and deductions are not publicly available.

2. Songwriting and publishing royalties
Journey songs can produce income through several different rights systems, including public-performance royalties, mechanical royalties, synchronization licenses, downloads, and other forms of use. Perry’s songwriting relationship with Schon and Jonathan Cain is documented in a Library of Congress interview, which describes the collaborative process behind Journey’s songs.
But collaboration does not mean equal ownership, and Perry’s public comments do not disclose a single fixed percentage for every Journey composition. The writers’ shares can differ from song to song, while publishers, administrators, labels, and collection societies may also be involved. It is accurate to say that Perry has continuing songwriting-related interests; it is not accurate to assume he owns all, or a fixed majority, of the songs mentioned in this story.
3. Recorded-music royalties
Streams, downloads, physical copies, compilations, and reissues can produce recording-related income. The enormous performance of Greatest Hits and “Don’t Stop Believin’” establishes a large revenue base for the relevant rights holders.

The money passing through a catalog is not the same as money paid to an individual artist after label accounting, recoupment, royalty splits, publishing arrangements, management costs, taxes, and any other contractual deductions.
4. Perry’s own recordings and creative work
Journey is only one part of Perry’s post-band activity. His official catalog includes the solo releases Traces and The Season, as well as later alternate-version material connected with Traces. His official website also announced a 2026 reimagined version of “Faithfully” with Willie Nelson for Farm Aid.
Those projects may generate their own recording, publishing, performance, or licensing income, but they should not be confused with money from Journey’s current live performances. For listeners interested in the later solo chapter, Steve Perry Traces CD or vinyl is a more relevant recommendation than another Journey compilation.
Does “still making millions” hold up?
It depends on what the phrase means.
If it means that Perry has no continuing financial relationship with Journey, the claim is misleading. The reported exit arrangement, his songwriting interests, and the continuing success of the catalog all point in the opposite direction.

If it means that a reliable source has documented a multimillion-dollar payment to Perry every year since 1998, the claim is unsupported. No dependable public source reviewed for this article provides his annual royalty statements, tax filings, audited personal income, or a complete accounting of the reported agreement.
| Claim | Evidence-based assessment |
|---|---|
| Perry still receives some Journey-related income. | Plausible and supported by public reporting, although the exact payments are private. |
| Perry receives 12.5% of all Journey revenue. | Incorrectly broad. The reported figure concerns 12.5% of net earnings from each Journey tour. |
| Perry makes millions every year from Journey. | Not publicly verified. It may be possible in some years, but the evidence does not establish a regular annual total. |
| Perry owns the Journey name and trademark. | Not supported by the reported arrangement. Control reportedly went to Schon and Cain. |
| Celebrity websites’ $70 million net-worth estimates prove his annual income. | No. Those estimates vary, are not audited personal financial statements, and do not show the source or timing of his income. |
Reporting on Perry’s 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame comments also quoted him as saying that he had not experienced money problems since leaving Journey. That statement is consistent with financial security, but it still does not amount to a published annual income figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Steve Perry returning to Journey in 2026?
Not according to the most recent reporting in the research record. A February 19, 2026 UPI report said Perry denied plans to rejoin Journey’s 2026 farewell tour.
That denial reinforces the distinction at the center of this story: Perry can benefit from legacy rights without returning to the road. Any money he receives under a private agreement or from songwriting and recording rights is separate from income earned by performing on the current Journey tour.
His continued creative activity also shows that “left Journey” does not mean “left music.” The Willie Nelson collaboration, his solo catalog, and alternate versions of earlier material keep Perry connected to music even while he remains separate from Journey’s touring lineup.
The bottom line
Steve Perry’s 1998 exit ended his role as Journey’s active frontman, but it apparently did not end every economic interest tied to the band. Journey’s catalog continues to sell, stream, play in public venues, and appear in film and television. Perry’s songwriting and recording work remains attached to that catalog, and secondary reporting says his departure agreement included a share of certain Journey album and tour earnings, including a reported 12.5% of defined tour net earnings.

Reporting basis: This account draws on Perry’s interviews with GQ and the Library of Congress, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Journey’s official site, the RIAA database, iHeart’s report on Journey litigation documents, UPI’s 2026 report, Perry’s official website, and reporting on his 2018 Hall of Fame comments. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steve Perry still receive money from Journey?
Yes, probably—but the exact amount is private. Public reporting says Perry retained economic interests in Journey’s albums and tours, while his songwriting and recording work can continue to generate royalties. No reliable public source documents a fixed annual payment or proves that he earns millions every year.
What does Steve Perry’s reported 12.5% Journey deal mean?
Not broadly. A 2020 iHeart report based on legal documents described a reported 12.5% share of net earnings from each Journey tour. That is not the same as 12.5% of gross ticket sales, total revenue, or every Journey-related payment.
Does Steve Perry own part of the Journey name?
Journey’s name and trademark were reportedly placed under Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain’s control. Perry may retain financial interests under the reported agreement, but the available evidence does not show that he owns the Journey trademark.
Is Steve Perry joining Journey’s 2026 farewell tour?
No. A February 19, 2026 UPI report said Perry denied plans to rejoin Journey’s 2026 farewell tour. He can still benefit from catalog or contractual rights without performing with the band.
The Bottom Line
Steve Perry probably still makes meaningful money from Journey, but “millions every year” is an estimate—not a documented fact. The public record supports continuing songwriting, catalog, and reportedly contractual touring income, while leaving the exact annual amount unknown.
