The best order for most viewers is release order. Start with Transformers (2007), watch the four live-action sequels in sequence, then move to Bumblebee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Transformers One. The 1986 animated movie is worth adding, but it belongs to a separate G1 continuity.

For a first watch, use theatrical release order: start with Transformers (2007), continue through the five Michael Bay films, then watch Bumblebee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Transformers One. The 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie, is essential franchise history but belongs to the separate G1 animated continuity.

Transformers movies in release order

  1. Transformers (2007) — Live-action, 144 minutes, PG-13.
Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie introduces Sam Witwicky, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, the Autobots, and the Decepticons’ war on Earth. It is the best starting point for viewers who want to follow the modern theatrical franchise as audiences originally experienced it.
  2. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) — Live-action, 150 minutes, PG-13.
The sequel continues Sam’s story and expands the mythology surrounding the ancient origins of the Transformers. Watch it directly after the 2007 film because it follows the same main human and Autobot characters.
  3. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) — Live-action, 157 minutes, PG-13.
Sam and the Autobots face another threat tied to Earth’s past. This is the third film in the original live-action run and completes the first major phase of Sam’s story.
  4. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) — Live-action, 165 minutes, PG-13.
The human cast changes to focus on inventor Cade Yeager, while Optimus Prime and the Autobots remain central. The film’s premise also brings the Dinobots into the main live-action saga.
  5. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) — Live-action, 154 minutes, PG-13.
Cade Yeager and Optimus Prime return in a story that connects Transformers mythology with Earth’s history. It is the fifth and final Michael Bay-directed entry in the initial live-action sequence.
  6. Bumblebee (2018) — Live-action.
Set in the 1980s, this smaller-scale adventure follows Bumblebee after Cybertron has fallen and Charlie Watson, the teenager who discovers and repairs him in the form of a damaged Volkswagen Beetle. Its different tone and continuity make it a more accessible entry point for some viewers, but release order still places it after The Last Knight.
  7. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) — Live-action.
Set in the 1990s, the film follows Noah and Elena as they become involved with the Autobots and the Maximals. It is the natural follow-up to Bumblebee when organizing the newer live-action films by story time.
  8. Transformers One (2024) — Fully computer-animated.
This origin story takes place on Cybertron and focuses on the earlier relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, who become Optimus Prime and Megatron. It is a separate animated origin story, not a direct continuation of the Bay-era live-action films.

Where does The Transformers: The Movie (1986) fit?

The Transformers: The Movie (1986) is an important theatrical film, but it is not a prequel to the 2007 live-action movie. It belongs to the original G1 animated continuity and features the Autobots, Decepticons, Unicron, and the Matrix of Leadership.

You can include it in either of two sensible ways:

  • Historical-first order: watch the 1986 film before Transformers (2007). This gives you the original theatrical animated era before the franchise moves into live action.
  • Modern-saga order: watch the five 2007–2017 films, then watch the 1986 film as a classic bonus before continuing with Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts, and Transformers One.

For a true release-history completionist list, place the 1986 movie first, followed by the 2007–2024 films. That ordering reflects release dates, not a shared story chronology.

Best order for first-time viewers

  2. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
  3. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
  4. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
  5. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
  6. Bumblebee (2018)
  7. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)
  8. Transformers One (2024)

Add The Transformers: The Movie (1986) before the list if you want the franchise’s complete theatrical history, or save it for afterward as a separate G1 animated feature.

Best order for the modern live-action story

Watch the five Bay-era films in release order—Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, and The Last Knight—then watch Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts.

This is a practical franchise order rather than a claim that all seven films fit together without contradictions. The series revises elements of its mythology and continuity, while the later films shift the tone, period setting, and character focus.

Best order for the newer live-action continuity

  1. Bumblebee (2018)
  2. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)

Bumblebee is set in the 1980s and Rise of the Beasts in the 1990s, making this the clearest short viewing path when you want the newer live-action era arranged by story time. Treat the pair as a newer continuity or soft reset, not as a perfectly reconciled prequel to every event in the 2007–2017 films.

Best order for G1 and animation fans

  1. The Transformers: The Movie (1986)
  2. Transformers One (2024)

These are both animated theatrical films, but they are not one continuous storyline. The 1986 movie is part of the original G1 animated world; Transformers One is a separate Cybertron-set origin story centered on Orion Pax and D-16.

Complete theatrical-film order

  1. The Transformers: The Movie (1986)
  2. Transformers (2007)
  3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
  4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
  5. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
  6. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
  7. Bumblebee (2018)
  8. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)
  9. Transformers One (2024)

This is the simplest complete list of the theatrical Transformers movies released through 2024. It should be understood as franchise-history order, not one nine-film canon.

Transformers movies in chronological story order

  1. Bumblebee — 1980s
  2. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts — 1990s
  3. Transformers (2007)
  4. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
  5. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
  6. Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
  7. Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)

The first two placements are the clearest: Bumblebee is set in the 1980s, followed by the 1990s setting of Rise of the Beasts. The remaining five are best kept in release order because their main present-day narratives follow that sequence. Flashbacks, revised historical claims, and continuity changes make a strict scene-by-scene chronology unreliable.

Do not place Transformers One into this list as though it were a direct live-action prequel. Its Cybertron setting and animated origin-story format make it a separate continuity for viewing purposes. The 1986 film should likewise remain outside the live-action chronology because it belongs to G1.

Do the Transformers movies share one continuity?

Not completely. The first five live-action films form the original Bay-era run and share recurring characters such as Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, but they also revise parts of the franchise’s history and mythology. Watching them in release order minimizes confusion because that is the order in which the narrative information and retcons were introduced.

Bumblebee changes the scale and tone of the live-action series and is commonly treated as the start of a newer live-action continuity or soft reset. Rise of the Beasts follows that newer direction and introduces the Maximals as a major faction. It is safest not to insist that every detail perfectly aligns with the 2007–2017 storyline.

Transformers One is animated and focuses on the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron’s relationship on Cybertron. The Transformers: The Movie (1986) is the classic G1 animated feature. Neither should be inserted into the middle of the live-action sequence as if all nine movies formed one uninterrupted canon.

Where to watch or buy the movies

Availability depends on your country, the date you check, and whether you want to stream, rent, buy digitally, or use physical media. Paramount’s official movie pages and its franchise viewing guide are useful starting points, but catalog rights can change. Check the current listing for each specific film rather than assuming that one subscription includes the entire franchise.

Physical collections are often the most predictable option for completionists, but editions vary. Before purchasing, check whether the set includes the 1986 animated movie, the newer live-action films, and Transformers One; whether it is DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K; and whether the discs work in your region. A set described as a “movie collection” is not necessarily a complete theatrical collection.

Quick answer

For most people, watch Transformers (2007) → Revenge of the Fallen → Dark of the Moon → Age of Extinction → The Last Knight → Bumblebee → Rise of the Beasts → Transformers One. Watch The Transformers: The Movie (1986) separately, either before the modern films for historical context or afterward as a G1 bonus.

Where does the 1986 Transformers movie fit?

The 1986 film is part of the original G1 animated continuity, so it is not a direct prequel to the 2007 live-action movie. Watch it before the modern films for franchise history, or separately as a classic bonus.

Can I watch the Transformers movies in chronological order?

For broad story-time order, watch Bumblebee, then Rise of the Beasts, followed by the five Bay-era movies in release order. This is only broad chronology because the live-action series contains continuity revisions.

Is Transformers One connected to the live-action movies?

No. Transformers One is a separate fully computer-animated origin story set on Cybertron, while the 1986 movie belongs to the G1 animated continuity. Neither should be inserted into the live-action sequence as a direct chapter.

The Bottom Line

Best overall order: watch the 2007–2017 live-action films in release order, then Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts, and Transformers One. Add the 1986 animated movie separately because it belongs to the G1 continuity, not the live-action canon.
