January 2024 was unusually front-loaded on Netflix in the United States. The month opened with a large licensed-film drop—including the first three John Wick films, the original Jurassic Park trilogy, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest—then continued with new Netflix series, documentaries, anime, specials, and returning seasons. This guide covers historical U.S. arrivals, not what Netflix necessarily carries today.
January 2024 was unusually front-loaded on Netflix in the United States. The month began with a substantial wave of licensed movies—including the first three John Wick films, the original Jurassic Park trilogy, Gravity, Jackie Brown, School of Rock, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest—before Netflix’s own premieres arrived steadily throughout the month.
This is a historical guide to what arrived in the U.S. Netflix catalog during January 2024. It is not a claim about what remains available today. Netflix availability varies by country and changes over time, and historical release schedules can be revised.

January 2024’s best Netflix additions at a glance
- Best franchise binge: John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, and John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum.
- Best family adventure block: Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park III.
- Best new crime-action series: The Brothers Sun.
- Best new survival drama: Society of the Snow.
- Best new character-driven film: Good Grief.
- One film to prioritize above the rest: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
What arrived on January 1?
The January 1 additions were primarily licensed catalog titles, not Netflix Originals. The drop was notable because it put several recognizable franchises and acclaimed films in one place at the start of the year.
Action: the first three John Wick films
The clearest adult marathon was John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, and John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum. Watching them consecutively gives the series a satisfying escalation: the first film establishes the underworld and its rules, the second expands that mythology, and the third turns the premise into an international pursuit.
#1 Best Overall
- Easy voice search & control: Quickly search across thousands of top channels, play entertainment, control your streaming, and more with your voice
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, control your Roku device, switch inputs on your Roku TV, and more—all in a tap
- Pre-set channel shortcuts: Pre-set channel shortcuts let you launch popular streaming channels with the push of a button, all without having to scroll
- Simple setup: Simply turn on your Roku device and pull the battery tab on the back of the remote and it should pair automatically
- Works with your Roku device: Roku Voice Remote works with all Roku TV models, Roku audio products, and most Roku players*
If you want to keep the marathon after a streaming window ends, an optional physical-media route is a John Wick 4K Blu-ray listing. Check the exact edition, region, stock, price, and retailer before buying; this article does not treat a disc release as a substitute for Netflix or claim that any particular listing is currently available.
Dinosaurs and family adventure
The first three Jurassic Park films also arrived together:
- Jurassic Park
- The Lost World: Jurassic Park
- Jurassic Park III
That makes a natural nostalgia-focused or family movie block, though “family” should not be read as “suitable for every child.” The films contain frightening dinosaur attacks, peril, and sustained suspense, so parents should consider the age and sensitivity of the viewers.

For lighter viewing, January 1 also brought Beethoven, How to Train Your Dragon, School of Rock, Mamma Mia!, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. They cover different moods rather than forming one continuous series: animated adventure, family comedy, music-driven feel-good entertainment, and a rock-classroom comedy.
Acclaimed and conversation-starting films
The more substantial film lane included Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, the science-fiction thriller Gravity, and the drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. These are better choices for viewers looking for performances, filmmaking, or discussion than for anyone simply seeking the next installment in a franchise.
Other January 1 catalog arrivals
The historical U.S. release lists also included Annabelle, Annie (1982), Antz, Aquaman, Bruce Almighty, Dawn of the Dead, It’s Complicated, Justice League, Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, and Little Fockers, among additional catalog titles. Because the original schedule was a work in progress, the exact January 1 inventory should be understood as a historical schedule rather than a permanent catalog snapshot.
Netflix Originals and major premieres by date
The following are the major Netflix-branded or Netflix-scheduled arrivals reported for the U.S. January 2024 calendar. They are separated from the licensed films above because a Netflix Original label and a Netflix catalog appearance are not the same thing: Netflix’s global announcements can have different country-specific slates and dates.

Returning and weekly releases
January was not limited to one-off premieres. The schedule also included weekly or continuing releases of My Demon, Single’s Inferno, Welcome to Samdal-ri, and A Clean Sweep. These titles mattered for viewers who preferred a regular episode-by-episode routine over consuming an entire season on its release day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you watch only one film, make it One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
If you watch only one film from January’s licensed additions, make it One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. That is an editorial recommendation, not an official Netflix ranking. The film earns the distinction because it gives this otherwise very broad monthly schedule a durable classic at its center.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →January’s additions offered obvious pleasures: kinetic action in John Wick, dinosaur spectacle in Jurassic Park, singalong energy in Mamma Mia!, and a large assortment of new reality, documentary, anime, and international programming. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest operates on a different level. It is a psychologically charged drama about authority, institutional control, resistance, and the cost of refusing to conform. Its importance is not dependent on being new, trending, or made for streaming.
It is also the best recommendation for a reader who wants the month’s single “must-see” rather than another item to add to a queue. Watch it for the performances and conflict, but also for the questions it leaves behind: Who gets to define normal behavior? What does care become when an institution removes a person’s agency? And when does rebellion help—or destroy—the person rebelling?

The film can be emotionally difficult and includes mature themes, so it is not a casual family-night suggestion. For adult viewers interested in a canonical drama, however, it is the January arrival most likely to remain worth discussing long after the newer releases have cycled out.

A note about availability
These were U.S. January 2024 arrivals, not a current Netflix availability guide. A title may have been removed since then, may still be available in another country, or may have had a schedule change before or after its reported date. If you are planning a watch night now, search the Netflix catalog in your own country and confirm the title before committing to a marathon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these movies and shows still on Netflix?
No. This is a historical guide to titles that arrived in the U.S. Netflix catalog during January 2024. Netflix’s catalog changes, and availability also differs by country, so check your local Netflix listing before planning a watch.
What were the best things added to Netflix in January 2024?
The strongest franchise marathons were the first three John Wick films and the first three Jurassic Park films. The best single-film recommendation was One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, an editorial choice rather than an official Netflix ranking.
What is the difference between the January 1 additions and the Netflix Originals?
The January 1 wave consisted mainly of licensed catalog titles, while the dated premieres later in the month included Netflix-branded or Netflix-scheduled films, series, documentaries, anime, specials, and returning seasons. A title appearing on Netflix does not automatically mean it is a Netflix Original.
The Bottom Line
January 2024’s U.S. Netflix lineup had something for nearly every kind of viewer, but its strongest combination was the first three John Wick films for a binge and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for the one film most worth prioritizing. Remember that this is a historical arrival guide, not a statement of what Netflix carries today.
