To download Kindle on a Windows PC, open Amazon’s official Kindle Apps download page, choose the desktop download for your computer, and run the installer. After installation, sign in with the Amazon account that owns your Kindle books, then select a title in your library to download and read.
Important: Amazon’s older application formerly known as Kindle for PC is now legacy software. Amazon says it will not be supported after June 30, 2026. If an old installation stops opening or syncing, replace it with the current desktop app rather than searching for an old installer.
How to download the Kindle app for Windows
- Open Amazon’s current Kindle Apps download page. Start there instead of using an old bookmarked installer or a third-party download site.
- Choose the download labeled for PC or Windows. Amazon’s storefront and button labels can vary by country or account region.
- Save the installer when your browser asks where to place it.
- Open the downloaded file from your browser’s download list or from the Downloads folder.
- Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
- Launch Kindle after the installation finishes.
- Sign in with the Amazon account used to purchase or acquire your Kindle books.
- Select a book in your library. The app will download the title to the computer for reading.
The exact installer filename, file size, and download button may differ between Amazon storefronts. Do not rely on a filename or direct executable URL copied from an old tutorial.

Which Kindle app should you download?
Search results may use “Kindle for PC” as a familiar phrase, but that name commonly refers to Amazon’s older desktop application. For a new installation, use the current desktop download from Amazon’s Kindle Apps page.

How to read Kindle books on a PC without downloading the app
If you do not want to install the desktop program, open Kindle for Web in a browser and sign in. Amazon also refers to this browser-based option as Kindle Cloud Reader. Your Kindle library is associated with your Amazon account, so a physical Kindle device is not required to read Kindle books on a computer.
Kindle for Web is a practical alternative when:
- the desktop installer is blocked by a work or school computer;
- your Windows installation is not accepted by the current app;
- you prefer not to install another program;
- you are replacing a troublesome legacy Kindle for PC installation; or
- you only need occasional access to your Kindle library.
Windows compatibility and Windows 10
Amazon’s current desktop help page lists Windows 11 as the supported Windows platform. A separate Amazon support response has mentioned Windows 10 or Windows 11, so Windows 10 compatibility should not be assumed for every current installer.
If you use Windows 10, check the requirements and compatibility message shown on Amazon’s current download page. If the installer does not support your system, use Kindle for Web instead. This is safer than downloading an unofficial or archived installer that may be unsupported.

If Windows is in S mode
Windows S mode restricts installation to applications available through Microsoft’s approved installation routes. If Windows prevents the Amazon installer from running, do not download a replacement from an unofficial repository or follow an unverified sideloading guide.
Use Kindle for Web at read.amazon.com, or consult Microsoft’s current guidance for changing or managing S mode. The correct S-mode procedure can depend on the Windows edition and the computer’s management settings.
Do not install the Amazon Appstore for Kindle
Some older guides tell Windows users to install the Kindle Android app through the Amazon Appstore. That is no longer the current route: Amazon announced that Amazon Appstore support on Windows ended after March 5, 2025.
For a Windows computer, use Amazon’s current desktop Kindle download or Kindle for Web. Android-on-Windows instructions published before that support cutoff are historical and should not be treated as the normal installation method now.

Kindle Previewer and Kindle Create are different programs
Amazon offers several Kindle-related downloads, but not all of them are reading apps:
- Kindle Previewer is a publishing tool for checking how an ebook appears on Kindle devices and apps.
- Kindle Create is an authoring tool for preparing manuscripts and creating ebook files.
Neither is the ordinary application for opening books you purchased from the Kindle Store. Choose the consumer Kindle desktop app for reading.
Troubleshooting Kindle on a PC
The old Kindle app will not open
If the application is identified as the legacy Kindle for PC app, uninstall it and download the current desktop application from Amazon’s Kindle Apps page. Amazon says the legacy application is unsupported after June 30, 2026, so reinstalling the same old version is not a dependable long-term fix.
The download button is missing or redirects
- Return to Amazon’s current Kindle Apps page rather than an old help article or saved installer link.
- Check that you are viewing the correct Amazon storefront for your country.
- Try a normal desktop browser if the page is being opened inside an embedded browser or restricted environment.
- If installation still is not available, use Kindle for Web.
Amazon can present different download options according to location, account region, and operating system, so a missing button does not necessarily mean that a particular universal installer URL is required.

My Kindle books do not appear
Confirm that you signed in with the same Amazon account used to buy or acquire the books. A different account can produce an apparently empty library even when the installation worked correctly.
If the account is correct, close and reopen the app, check the library view, and allow the program time to synchronize. You can also sign in at Kindle for Web to determine whether the books are available in the account’s online library.
Can I buy Kindle books inside the PC app?
Do not assume that the desktop app provides an in-app bookstore or purchase button. Kindle books are purchased through Amazon’s Kindle Store and then appear in the reading app after you sign in with the associated account.

No. You can download the Kindle desktop app or read through Kindle for Web without owning a Kindle e-reader. A dedicated Kindle e-reader is an optional alternative for people who want a separate reading device, but it is not required to download Kindle on a PC or access Kindle books on a computer.

Does the Kindle PC app work on Windows 10?
Amazon’s current desktop help page lists Windows 11. Some Amazon support material has mentioned Windows 10 as well, but compatibility should be checked on the current download page. If the installer rejects Windows 10, use Kindle for Web.
