You can change the main Netflix profile, but you cannot delete it while the Netflix account remains active. Open Manage Profiles, select the main profile, choose Edit, and save the changes. If you need to remove a profile entirely, that option is generally available only for secondary profiles.
Yes, you can change the main Netflix profile, but you cannot delete it while the Netflix account remains active. To update it, open Netflix’s Manage Profiles area, select the main profile, choose the Edit icon, change the available information or setting, and save. The main profile does not receive a normal Delete Profile option.
How to change the main Netflix profile
- Open Netflix and go to Manage Profiles.
- Select the main profile you want to modify.
- Choose the Edit icon.
- Select the profile detail or setting you want to change.
- Save or submit the change when Netflix prompts you to do so.
Depending on the account and the setting, Netflix may let you change the profile name, profile icon, language, maturity level, viewing restrictions, subtitle appearance, playback settings, notification preferences, viewing activity controls, game-related information, recommendations, My List, and ratings. Not every control appears in every Netflix app or on every device.
If you need to change a maturity rating or parental-control setting, use Netflix.com in a web browser rather than relying on a television or streaming-device interface. Netflix notes that maturity-rating changes cannot be made directly on a TV or streaming device.

Why can’t the main profile be deleted?
Netflix treats the main profile as the primary profile attached to the account. Unlike secondary profiles, it cannot be removed through the ordinary Manage Profiles controls. Creating another profile does not promote that profile and does not unlock a way to delete the original main profile.
In practical terms, the main profile has to remain on the account as long as the account remains active. You can rename it, change its settings, or adjust its personalization, but you should not expect a Delete Profile button for it.
How to delete a secondary Netflix profile
Secondary profiles can generally be deleted separately:
- Open Manage Profiles.
- Select the secondary profile.
- Choose Edit.
- Select Delete Profile.
- Confirm the deletion.
Netflix says that either the profile being deleted or the main profile must be active to complete the deletion. If the profile you want to remove is not currently selected, switch to it or switch to the main profile and try again.

Important: Deleting a profile is not just removing its name from the profile picker. Netflix warns that the profile’s viewing history and game saves are deleted. Profile-level personalization—including recommendations, My List, ratings, settings, and related information—may also be lost. Check the profile carefully before confirming.
What to do if Edit or Delete Profile is missing
Netflix interfaces differ between browsers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, and streaming devices. A missing control does not necessarily mean the profile is permanently locked.
Try these steps in order:
- Switch profiles: Select the main profile or the profile you are trying to manage, then reopen Manage Profiles.
- Use a browser: Go to Netflix.com and open Manage Profiles there. This is especially important for maturity-rating and other account-management changes that may not be available on a TV.
- Sign out and sign back in: If Netflix reports a profile-operation error, refresh the account session and try again.
- Refresh the browser or device: Reload the Netflix webpage or restart the affected app or device, then retry the operation.
- Contact Netflix: If the profile remains stuck or Netflix displays an unusual account error, Netflix Support is the appropriate next step.
There is no need to assume that clearing cookies, reinstalling Netflix, or installing third-party repair software is required. Netflix’s documented troubleshooting focuses on using Netflix.com, signing in again, refreshing the device or browser, and contacting support when the problem persists.
Could profile transfer solve the problem?
Profile Transfer may help if the real goal is to give someone a separate Netflix account rather than simply reorganize the profiles on one account. For an eligible profile, Netflix can transfer important personalization to a new or existing account, including recommendations, viewing history, My List, game saves, settings, the profile name, and the profile icon.

However, profile transfer is not a way to delete the main profile in every situation. Netflix states that a primary profile cannot be transferred to an Extra Member account. Also, transferring or copying a profile does not always automatically remove the original from the old account. Whether the original remains depends on the transfer type and Netflix’s eligibility rules, and the primary-profile deletion restriction still applies.
Before transferring, check whether the profile is eligible and whether the destination is a new or existing full Netflix account. If the profile is the account’s primary profile, do not assume that transfer will leave the original account with no main profile or allow you to remove it afterward.
Some changes may require account-owner verification
Netflix may ask for the account password or send a verification code to the primary account email address or phone number for certain profile or parental-control changes. This can affect someone using a secondary profile who is trying to change a protected setting without access to the account owner’s verification method.
If Netflix requests verification, use the authorized account owner’s password or verification code. Do not treat the missing code as a device problem; it may be an account-security requirement.

Changing a profile is not the same as canceling Netflix
Deleting the Netflix app, signing out, or removing a profile does not cancel the membership. Cancellation is a separate action performed through Netflix’s membership controls or, in some cases, through the company that bills the account.
The membership end date depends on the billing status and payment partner. Netflix also says that after an account closes, information such as viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and game saves may remain available for 24 months if the member restarts within that period. That retention statement concerns a closed account; it is not a method for individually deleting the main profile from an active account.
Which option should you use?

Bottom line
You can edit Netflix’s main profile through Manage Profiles, but you cannot delete that profile while the account remains active. Use a web browser if the TV or streaming-device app does not show the required setting. Delete only a secondary profile when you are certain its viewing history, game saves, and personalization are no longer needed. If the aim is to separate someone’s viewing into another account, investigate Profile Transfer—but do not assume it removes the original primary profile.

Can I create a new profile and then delete the old main profile?
No. Creating another profile does not promote it to main-profile status or make the original profile deletable through Manage Profiles.
How do I delete a secondary Netflix profile?
