Spoiler warning: Juror #2’s ending reveals who caused Kendall Carter’s death and explains Faith Killebrew’s appearance at Justin Kemp’s front door.
The direct answer is that Faith has worked out that Justin—not James Michael Sythe—caused Kendall’s death. She comes to Justin’s house to pursue the truth, but the film deliberately cuts to black before confirming whether she arrests him, reopens the case, or takes another legal step.
Spoilers for the entire ending of Juror #2 follow.
Who really killed Kendall Carter?
Juror #2 ultimately establishes that Justin Kemp, played by Nicholas Hoult, caused Kendall Carter’s death. However, it was not an intentional murder. On the night Kendall died, Justin had been drinking at the same bar and was driving through a storm when he struck what he believed was a deer. He later realizes that the object he hit was Kendall.
That discovery turns Justin’s jury service into a moral crisis. James Michael Sythe is on trial for Kendall’s murder, but Justin now understands that the prosecution may have accused the wrong man. Justin could reveal what happened and risk prison, the loss of his family, and separation from his pregnant wife, Allison. Or he can remain silent and allow Sythe to be convicted.

Justin chooses silence. More than that, he uses his position on the jury to help move the deliberations toward a guilty verdict. Sythe is convicted of malice murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Why does Justin let Sythe go to prison?
Justin’s decision is driven by fear, self-preservation, and his belief that exposing the truth would produce a devastatingly disproportionate result. The death was accidental, but Justin’s later conduct is deliberate: he hides what he knows, influences the jury, and accepts a verdict that sends another man to prison for life.
His former sponsor and lawyer, Larry, reinforces that choice. Larry advises Justin not to come forward and suggests that he should help the jury reach a verdict so the matter can disappear. Justin is therefore not simply a frightened witness who fails to speak. He makes a series of active choices after realizing that his own actions may have caused Kendall’s death.
This distinction is central to the film. Justin did not set out to kill Kendall, but the accident does not erase his responsibility for concealing it or for allowing Sythe to be punished in his place.

What happens to Faith Killebrew?
Faith Killebrew, played by Toni Collette, wins the case and is subsequently elected district attorney. But her investigation into the possibility of a hit-and-run continues to trouble the prosecution’s version of events.
Faith’s inquiry leads her to a damaged vehicle and to Allison, the registered owner of the car Justin was driving. Allison repeats Justin’s explanation that the damage came from hitting a deer. Faith later sees Justin at Sythe’s sentencing. She remembers that Juror No. 2 had mentioned having a pregnant wife, connects Allison to Justin, and realizes that the juror who helped secure Sythe’s conviction may actually have been responsible for Kendall’s death.

Faith confronts Justin outside the courthouse. He does not deliver a formal, recorded confession. Instead, their exchange is indirect and morally charged. Justin argues, in effect, that exposing the truth would destroy his family while also damaging Faith’s political career. The conversation expresses the film’s central conflict: truth and justice do not always seem to lead to consequences that feel proportionate to the original act.
Why does Faith come to Justin’s house?
After the courthouse confrontation, Justin returns home to Allison and their newborn child. The family’s apparent safety is interrupted by a knock at the door. When Justin opens it, Faith is standing outside. Neither character speaks before the film cuts to black.

Faith comes to Justin’s house because she has worked out that he, not Sythe, caused Kendall’s death. Her appearance shows that she has not accepted the conviction and simply moved on. She has come to act on what she has discovered, or at least to force the issue of Justin’s responsibility.
But the film does not show exactly what Faith intends to do. It does not establish that she has arrived with an arrest warrant, police officers, or a completed plan to charge Justin. It also does not show Sythe being released, the conviction being overturned, or Justin formally confessing. The most accurate reading is that Faith’s arrival signals the beginning of accountability while deliberately withholding its legal outcome.
Is Justin arrested at the end?
The film does not confirm that Justin is arrested. An arrest is a reasonable possibility, but it is not shown or stated.
The final image leaves several possibilities open. Faith may intend to confront Justin again, obtain a clearer admission, begin formal prosecutorial proceedings, or take steps to correct Sythe’s wrongful conviction. She may have police waiting nearby, but the released film does not establish that. Claiming that Justin is definitely arrested goes beyond what the ending depicts.

The same restraint applies to Sythe’s fate. The ending does not show him being freed or formally exonerated. It leaves the audience with the knowledge that the wrong man may be imprisoned and the person responsible has finally been identified.
What did Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette say about the final scene?
Nicholas Hoult has explained that the production filmed more than one version of the ending. One version showed Collette’s Faith alone at the door, while other filmed versions included police officers beside her or police cars in the background.
The version chosen for the film was the more mysterious one. Hoult said that it worked better because it leaves viewers asking what will happen next—and what the right thing to happen next actually is. Those comments support the conclusion that the ambiguity was intentional. The filmmakers considered showing a more explicit legal consequence but selected a final cut that keeps the outcome unresolved.
That does not mean the film has no answer. Faith’s presence has a clear narrative meaning: Justin’s apparent escape is no longer secure, and the wrongful conviction has come back into view. What remains uncertain is how Faith will pursue the truth and whether the justice system will correct its mistake.
Why the ending is morally complicated
Juror #2 avoids a simple reversal in which Sythe is obviously innocent and Justin is simply the hidden murderer. Justin caused Kendall’s death accidentally, while Sythe is presented as a difficult and potentially threatening defendant whose history, temperament, and possible gang connections influence the jurors. Those details shape how the jury evaluates him, even though character judgments are not proof of murder.
The result is a portrait of a justice system failing through several interacting decisions:

- Justin withholds the information that could change the case.
- The jury weighs suspicion, personality, and pressure alongside the evidence.
- The prosecution secures a conviction but eventually discovers that its theory may be wrong.
- The defense and the court operate within a trial shaped by incomplete information.
- Sythe’s sentence becomes the consequence of a verdict that may be legally final but factually mistaken.
That is why the film’s central question is not merely, “Did Justin intentionally kill Kendall?” It is, “What responsibility does Justin incur after learning that his silence may send an innocent person to prison?” The accident explains Kendall’s death; it does not excuse Justin’s later decisions.
Truth versus justice in Juror #2
Justin believes that telling the truth could create a result worse than the one already before him. He would lose his family, face punishment, and perhaps still fail to produce a clean or proportionate form of justice. Faith, however, represents the institutional obligation to confront a wrongful conviction even when doing so is politically damaging and personally disruptive.
The film does not resolve that conflict with a speech or a courtroom reversal. Instead, it places Faith at Justin’s front door, where private domestic security meets public accountability. Justin’s newborn child and family embody everything he fears losing. Sythe’s life sentence embodies what his silence has imposed on someone else.
Faith’s arrival therefore functions both as a plot development and as the film’s final moral challenge. Justin has tried to make the consequences disappear into the jury verdict. Faith’s decision to come to him suggests that a verdict cannot permanently bury the truth.

Justin accidentally kills Kendall, realizes that Sythe is being prosecuted for a crime Justin may have caused, and then chooses to protect himself by helping secure Sythe’s conviction. Faith later pieces together the evidence and identifies Justin as the likely culprit. When she appears at his home, the film strongly implies that she intends to pursue the truth—but cuts to black before showing whether that means an arrest, a new investigation, or another formal step.

The uncertainty is the point. Juror #2 ends not with a confirmed punishment, but with the collapse of Justin’s belief that he can preserve his family by keeping the truth buried.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Justin intentionally kill Kendall in Juror #2?
No. The film establishes that Justin caused Kendall’s death accidentally, not that he intentionally murdered her. His moral responsibility comes from what he does afterward: remaining silent, influencing the jury, and allowing Sythe to receive a life sentence.
Is Justin arrested in the final scene?
No. Faith’s arrival strongly implies that she intends to pursue the truth, but the film does not show an arrest or state exactly what legal action she will take.

Does Sythe get released at the end?
The film does not show Sythe being released or the conviction being overturned. It ends with the wrong-man conviction still in place and Faith apparently beginning to act on what she has discovered.
Why is the ending of Juror #2 ambiguous?
Nicholas Hoult said that multiple versions of the scene were filmed, including versions with police. The filmmakers selected the version with Faith alone at the door to preserve uncertainty about what happens next.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Faith comes to Justin’s house because she has realized that he caused Kendall’s death and helped convict Sythe. The film strongly suggests that she will pursue accountability, but it does not confirm an arrest, a confession, or Sythe’s release. Nicholas Hoult’s comments indicate that the filmmakers deliberately chose this ambiguous version of the ending over alternatives that showed police more explicitly.
