Was There a 2024 Apple TV? What MacRumors Reported—and What Actually Released

There was no Apple TV released in 2024. MacRumors tracked a rumored refresh that was initially expected in the first half of the year, but a June 2, 2024 report said the launch was no longer imminent. The product available during 2024 remained Apple’s third-generation Apple TV 4K, introduced in October 2022.

The 2024 Apple TV was a rumor, not a released product

The phrase “2024 Apple TV” is easy to misread. MacRumors did report that Apple could refresh the Apple TV 4K during the first half of 2024, potentially with a faster chip and a lower starting price. But Apple never announced or released that model.

On June 2, 2024, MacRumors reported that a new Apple TV was no longer considered imminent and was not expected at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. The rumored first-half launch therefore disappeared from the calendar. The Apple TV hardware available during 2024 remained the third-generation Apple TV 4K, introduced in October 2022.

MacRumors’ later reporting moved expectations again: the rumored 2025 launch also failed to happen, and a replacement was expected no earlier than fall 2026 in the publication’s July 2026 coverage. Those later reports mentioned a faster A-series chip, improved networking and possible Apple Intelligence-related features, but none of those specifications had been confirmed by Apple at the time of reporting.

2024 Apple TV rumor timeline

Date What happened What it means
October 2022 Apple introduced the third-generation Apple TV 4K. This remained the current Apple TV hardware through 2024.
January–March 2024 MacRumors reported expectations of a faster-chip Apple TV refresh, possibly in the first half of the year. This was rumor-based reporting, not an Apple announcement.
June 2, 2024 MacRumors reported that Mark Gurman no longer considered a new Apple TV imminent and did not expect one at WWDC 2024. The expected 2024 launch had effectively been delayed or abandoned.
Later in 2024 No new Apple TV hardware appeared. There was no official “2024 Apple TV” model to buy.
2025–July 2026 reporting MacRumors reported that the expected 2025 replacement had also failed to launch and that a new model was being discussed for no earlier than fall 2026. The next Apple TV remained unannounced and its specifications remained uncertain.

The original reports also floated possibilities such as a $99 starting price and, separately, a future Apple TV camera concept. Neither became a confirmed 2024 launch specification. There was no finalized product name, price, release date, design or technical specification for the rumored refresh.

What Apple actually sold: the third-generation Apple TV 4K

Apple’s technical documentation identifies the third-generation Apple TV 4K as the 2022 model. It comes in two configurations:

Configuration Storage Networking and smart-home features Best suited to
Apple TV 4K 64GB Wi‐Fi 64GB Wi‐Fi 6; no Ethernet port Simple streaming and AirPlay setups using wireless networking
Apple TV 4K 128GB Wi‐Fi + Ethernet 128GB Wi‐Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking Wired home theaters, larger app libraries and compatible smart-home installations

Both versions use Apple’s A15 Bionic chip and support output up to 4K at 60 frames per second. Supported HDR formats include HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, but the actual result depends on the television, receiver, HDMI cable and content. Both models also include Bluetooth 5.0 and HDMI 2.1.

The HDMI connection supports 4K60 HDR output, Audio Return Channel and eARC, plus Quick Media Switching in supported configurations. These are capabilities of the device and its HDMI connection—not guarantees that every television or receiver will support every feature.

The third-generation Siri Remote connects over Bluetooth 5.0, includes an infrared transmitter and charges through USB‐C. It can control compatible televisions and receivers, including power, input, volume and mute functions, through infrared or HDMI-CEC-related controls.

For readers who need a box now, the relevant purchase is the Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation—not an unannounced 2024 or 2026 model. The lower-capacity Apple TV 4K 64GB Wi‐Fi is the straightforward streaming option, while the Apple TV 4K 128GB Wi‐Fi + Ethernet is the more flexible choice for wired networking or Thread-based smart-home use.

Why the 2022 model still mattered in 2024

Although the hardware was already two years old by 2024, the third-generation Apple TV 4K was not made obsolete by the lack of a refresh. Its A15 chip was sufficient for 4K streaming, HDR and Dolby Vision playback, AirPlay, games and Apple’s broader TV and smart-home functions.

Its age mattered more to buyers concerned with long-term performance, future Siri features, gaming headroom or wireless standards than to someone replacing an old streaming box. The absence of a 2024 model also meant that buyers were choosing between a known, shipping product and an uncertain rumor—not between two officially announced generations.

The 128GB version deserves special attention because its additional storage is not the only difference. It adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking. Choose it when the Apple TV will sit near a router or home-theater switch, when wireless congestion is a concern, or when the device will play a role in a compatible smart-home setup. Choose the 64GB Wi‐Fi version when a wireless connection is adequate and the Apple TV’s primary job is streaming.

What the later 2026 rumors said

MacRumors’ later buyer-guide and rumor coverage suggested that Apple was still working on an Apple TV replacement after the expected 2024 and 2025 launches did not happen. The reported target was no earlier than fall 2026, not a confirmed release date.

The rumored device was expected to retain the current compact black form factor while receiving a faster A-series processor. The A17 Pro was mentioned repeatedly, although MacRumors also cautioned that Apple could ultimately use a newer chip. A faster processor could improve demanding games and future software, but those benefits should not be presented as confirmed performance results.

MacRumors linked the delay to Apple’s work on a more personalized Siri experience and its Apple Intelligence roadmap. The theory was that Apple might hold the hardware until the newer Siri experience was ready. Whether that would bring Apple Intelligence to the Apple TV, and exactly which features would be supported, remained unconfirmed.

Other reported possibilities included:

  • Apple’s N1 networking chip;
  • Wi‐Fi 7;
  • Bluetooth 6;
  • additional RAM;
  • continued or improved Thread support; and
  • a built-in camera or camera-related FaceTime capability.

The camera idea requires particular caution. A built-in FaceTime camera had been discussed as a possible future feature, but MacRumors indicated that it was unclear whether it would arrive in the next model. It should not be listed as a feature of either the 2022 Apple TV 4K or a confirmed 2026 product.

Should you buy the current Apple TV 4K or wait?

The answer depends on whether you need a streaming box now and how much uncertainty you are willing to accept.

Buy the current model when:

  • You need a reliable 4K streaming and AirPlay device immediately.
  • You already use Apple devices or services and want Apple’s TV interface and ecosystem.
  • You need Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or eARC support in a compatible home-theater system.
  • You want a wired Ethernet connection or Thread networking now and the 128GB version fits the setup.
  • The current model is available at a price you consider worthwhile.

Wait when:

  • Your existing streaming device still works well.
  • You care about a newer processor for future gaming or demanding software.
  • You want to see whether Apple adds the rumored Siri, Apple Intelligence or networking improvements.
  • You are willing to wait for an unconfirmed product whose price, launch date and final specifications are unknown.

MacRumors’ July 2026 buyer’s-guide recommendation was “Don’t Buy” because a replacement was expected later that year. That was a time-sensitive recommendation, not proof that the current Apple TV 4K was defective or unusable. A buyer reading the recommendation should check whether the anticipated launch has actually been announced before delaying a purchase.

Setup details and accessories

The Apple TV 4K requires an HDMI cable, and Apple specifies HDMI 2.1 support for the third-generation model. A suitable HDMI 2.1 cable for Apple TV 4K is a sensible setup purchase when a cable is not already available. However, a newer cable cannot create 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, eARC or 4K60 support if the television, receiver or content source does not support the relevant standard.

The Siri Remote charges through USB‐C, and Apple notes that a charging cable or power adapter may be sold separately. If the cable is missing or needs to be dedicated to the remote, a USB‐C cable for Apple TV Siri Remote is the appropriate accessory. It is not a replacement for the Apple TV’s power connection.

If the original remote has been lost or damaged, an Apple TV Siri Remote replacement is more relevant than a general universal remote. Compatibility should be checked against the specific Apple TV generation and the television or receiver-control features required.

Owners of the 128GB Wi‐Fi + Ethernet model may also need a separate Ethernet cable for a wired installation. The Apple TV includes Gigabit Ethernet on that configuration, but the cable connecting it to the router or network switch is separate.

How to read the MacRumors coverage accurately

MacRumors’ 2024 coverage is best understood as a record of changing expectations. Early reports described a possible faster-chip refresh and potentially lower price. The June 2 report supplied the important correction: the product was no longer imminent. Later reporting established that the replacement did not arrive in 2024, did not arrive in 2025 either, and remained a future possibility in 2026.

That distinction matters because “Apple TV 2024” can describe three different searches:

  1. Someone looking for an Apple TV model released during 2024. No such model was released.
  2. Someone looking for MacRumors’ 2024 rumor coverage. That coverage concerned a possible refresh that did not materialize.
  3. Someone looking for the Apple TV available during 2024. That was the third-generation Apple TV 4K from October 2022.

The rumored 2026 device belongs in a separate, clearly dated update. Until Apple announces it and publishes specifications, claims about its chip, Siri, Apple Intelligence, camera, Wi‐Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, RAM or price remain reports and possibilities—not product facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Apple release a 2024 Apple TV?

No. Apple did not release a new Apple TV model during 2024. MacRumors reported early expectations of a refresh, then reported on June 2, 2024 that a new model was no longer imminent. The Apple TV available during 2024 was the third-generation Apple TV 4K introduced in October 2022.

Should I buy the current Apple TV 4K or wait?

The current third-generation Apple TV 4K remains capable of 4K60 output, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, AirPlay, gaming and compatible smart-home functions. However, MacRumors’ July 2026 buyer’s-guide recommendation was “Don’t Buy” because a replacement was expected later that year. That advice is date-sensitive and should be reassessed against any official Apple announcement.

What is the difference between the Apple TV 4K 64GB and 128GB models?

The 64GB Wi‐Fi model is the simpler streaming choice. The 128GB Wi‐Fi + Ethernet model adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread networking, making it better for wired home theaters, larger app libraries and compatible smart-home installations. Both use the A15 Bionic chip and support the same core 4K HDR output features.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: There was no Apple TV released in 2024. MacRumors tracked a rumored refresh, then reported on June 2, 2024 that the launch was no longer imminent. The actual product remained the third-generation Apple TV 4K introduced in October 2022. As of MacRumors’ July 2026 reporting, the next model was still an unconfirmed future product expected no earlier than fall 2026, so buyers should choose between a known current device and the risk of waiting—not assume that a “2024 Apple TV” exists.
