“Suriname, For a Fistful of Gold” is an episode in the Deadliest Journeys / Dicing with Death series about travel through Suriname’s forested interior, with gold mining as its draw. The Prime Video listing frames the journey around a country with few roads, where rivers connect villages and canoes serve as transport.
The episode’s distributor synopsis is a description of its framing, not independent reporting. Research outside the listing documents environmental concerns associated with artisanal and small-scale gold mining in Suriname, including mercury contamination at sampled mine sites and mining-related deforestation.
What the episode is about
The Prime Video listing presents Suriname as a place where river travel is central to reaching villages in the forested interior. It describes canoes as taking the place of vehicles where roads are scarce. The episode title brings gold mining into that journey, but the listing should not be treated as independent verification of every scene or personal account in the film.
Gold mining and environmental context
Mercury contamination is one documented concern. A 2002 study by J. E. Gray, V. F. Labson, J. N. Weaver, and D. P. Krabbenhoft measured total mercury and methylmercury in water and sediment at artisanal gold-mining sites in Suriname and found levels elevated above local uncontaminated baselines. The study reported total mercury of 10–930 ng/L and methylmercury of 0.02–3.8 ng/L in sampled mine waters. These are historical, site-specific results, not current national averages.

- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- BLACK SAND MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The separator magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes straight off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
Gold mining has also contributed to forest loss. MAAP’s 2026 analysis estimates around 89,000 hectares of gold-mining deforestation in Suriname over 2001–2024, with around 25,000 hectares occurring in 2021–2024. MAAP also documents expansion into protected areas; these figures are estimates for the stated periods, not a measure of current conditions at every site.
Suriname acceded to the Minamata Convention on 2 August 2018. The United Nations in Suriname’s 2020 country assessment describes national action planning for artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Accession and planning do not, by themselves, establish present-day enforcement or outcomes.

FAQ
How do people travel through Suriname’s forest interior?
The Prime Video episode listing says there are few roads and describes rivers as routes between villages, with canoes serving as transport. This is the listing’s framing of the episode.
What environmental effects of small-scale gold mining are documented in Suriname?
Research has documented mercury in samples from artisanal mine waters and sediments. MAAP’s 2026 analysis also estimates substantial gold-mining deforestation over 2001–2024. The mercury results are from sampled locations in a 2002 study, and the deforestation figures are estimates for the periods MAAP reports.
