Mandy Horvath became the first double-amputee survivalist featured on Naked and Afraid when she entered Belize for Season 18, Episode 1, “No Legs, No Problem.” The milestone became a completed achievement: Horvath and Army veteran Jonny Yates lasted all 21 days of the jungle challenge.
A 21-day test in Belize
Horvath and Yates were sent into Belize’s dense jungle with the goal of lasting 21 days. As with the broader Naked and Afraid format, the participants had to manage without ordinary comforts, including ready-made food, reliable drinking water and clothing, while each received only one survival item.
The setting supplied no shortage of danger. Discovery’s episode material highlights torrential rain, venomous snakes and swarming mosquitoes. Interviews about the challenge also point to toxic plants, scarce food and water, difficult terrain, and the physical and emotional strain of depending on a randomly selected partner.
That combination made the episode more than a casting milestone. Horvath had to apply practical survival skills in an environment where movement, shelter-building, foraging and personal hygiene all presented distinctive challenges.

Who is Mandy Horvath?
Horvath is a Colorado-based bilateral amputee, mountaineer, public speaker and survivalist. She has spoken about losing both legs after being struck by a locomotive in 2014. Details about the accident and its circumstances should be understood as Horvath’s account, rather than as independently established facts in every detail.
Before appearing on television, she had already taken on demanding outdoor objectives. TV Insider described her as the first female bilateral amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Other coverage has highlighted her climbs of the Manitou Incline and Pikes Peak. Those accomplishments help explain why the Naked and Afraid challenge was not an out-of-nowhere stunt: Horvath had an established background in mountaineering, physical endurance and adaptive outdoor problem-solving.
Six months of preparation
Horvath told interviewers that she had approximately six months to prepare for filming. Her preparation included bushcraft, primitive tool-making, tanning, and studying Belize’s ecosystem, including its reptiles, plants and other wildlife.
She had been interested in primitive skills before the show and said she worked with college professors as she developed that knowledge. This preparation matters because it places the episode in the context of competence and deliberate training—not simply a story about overcoming a disability.

Survival television compresses complicated skills into a few hours of edited footage, but the underlying demands are substantial. Participants must identify usable materials, create shelter, find and process food, protect themselves from weather and insects, and make decisions while exhausted. Horvath entered the jungle with relevant preparation, but preparation could not remove the uncertainty of the terrain or the hazards of Belize.
Why Horvath did not use prosthetic legs
Horvath did not use her prosthetic legs during the challenge. In a Discovery-hosted question-and-answer session, she said that using them in the jungle would not have been sanitary or feasible. She also emphasized that the decision was hers, not a production decision to take them away.
That distinction is important. Prosthetic equipment is not a universal substitute for biological limbs, and the practical answer can change depending on terrain, climate, hygiene, skin condition, suspension, maintenance and the particular person’s needs. Horvath’s choice applies to her circumstances in this jungle challenge; it should not be generalized to all amputees or all outdoor environments.
The episode also should not be read as evidence that she was unable to participate without prostheses. Her preparation, experience and first-person account frame the decision as an adaptation to the environment. It was one of many decisions required to make the challenge workable.

What the episode represented
“No Legs, No Problem” presented the first double-amputee survivalist featured on Naked and Afraid. Representation alone, however, is only part of the story. The appearance put a bilateral amputee in the same survival format that routinely tests contestants with exposure, hunger, dehydration, insects, wildlife and isolation.
That framing avoids two common mistakes. Horvath should not be portrayed as helpless or as someone whose partner did everything for her. Nor should the episode be reduced to an inspirational slogan in which disability is treated as the only meaningful fact about her. Her technical preparation, decisions and relationship with the environment are central to understanding what she actually did.
Her partnership with Jonny Yates was another part of the test. Yates, an Army veteran, brought his own experience and perspective, but neither participant could predict how well two strangers would work together under severe conditions. Building trust, dividing tasks and handling disagreements are survival skills in their own right.
The outcome: Horvath and Yates completed 21 days
After the episode aired, follow-up reporting stated that Horvath and Yates completed the full 21-day challenge in the Belize jungle. Horvath has described herself as the first double amputee to complete 21 days on Naked and Afraid.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the appearance matters
Mandy Horvath’s episode matters first because it expanded who had been seen taking on the Naked and Afraid format. It matters just as much because the appearance ended in a completed challenge: Horvath and Yates lasted all 21 days in Belize.
The strongest account of the episode holds both facts together. Horvath made a representation milestone as the show’s first double-amputee survivalist, and she arrived with months of preparation, relevant outdoor experience and her own approach to adapting to the jungle. The result was not a symbolic appearance alone, but a finished survival challenge carried out on her terms.
