What is Professor T. Season 4 about?
Season 4 starts in the aftermath of Season 3’s traumatic ending: Detective Sergeant Lisa Donckers has died. Jasper is grieving and has stepped away from consulting for the police, retreating instead to his university lectures. Dan Winters responds differently, immersing himself in investigations.
Dr. Helena Goldberg tries to help Jasper confront the avoidance that is keeping him stuck. As the season progresses, new crimes draw him back toward the police team and give him a reason to use the unusual analytical skills that make him such an effective, if unconventional, criminologist. The cases provide the weekly mysteries, but Jasper’s recovery is the season’s larger through-line. [c002][c003]

Romance is also an explicit part of the season’s direction. ITV described Jasper’s “most baffling case yet” as romance, while PBS material places love alongside the new investigations and personal developments. That establishes romance as a major theme without confirming one definitive pairing in advance.
The continuing personal threads include Zelda Radclyffe’s new relationship, Adelaide Tempest’s influence over Jasper, Helena’s therapeutic relationship with him, the Dean’s connection to Zelda, and questions involving Jasper’s family identity. A later episode introduces a DNA test involving Jasper and Wilfred, making family revelations a significant part of the season’s emotional plot. [c002][c008][c009]
Professor T. Season 4 cast
- Ben Miller as Professor Jasper Tempest
- Zoe Wanamaker as Zelda Radclyffe, Jasper’s aunt
- Juliet Stevenson as Dr. Helena Goldberg, Jasper’s therapist
- Barney White as Detective Dan Winters
- Sunetra Sarker as DCI Maiya Goswami, the police unit’s new senior figure
- Rhian Blundell as Detective Chloe Highsmith
- Frances de la Tour as Adelaide Tempest, Jasper’s mother
ITV’s production material confirms the principal returning ensemble of Miller, Wanamaker, Stevenson, White, Sarker, and Blundell. PBS episode information also identifies the continuing roles of Adelaide and the wider personal and investigative storylines. [c001][c002]
Does Lisa Donckers return in Season 4?
Lisa remains important to the story, but not as a conventional returning member of the living ensemble. The season begins after her death, and Jasper’s grief over losing her shapes his withdrawal and eventual attempt to re-engage with life and police work. Emma Naomi’s Lisa should therefore be described as a continuing story presence rather than promised as a normal full-season return.
Professor T. Season 4 episode guide
Spoiler warning: The following descriptions reveal the setup and selected personal developments from all six episodes.
Episode 1 — “Overboard”
Jasper is no longer consulting for the police when a young woman disappears from a yacht. Helena encourages him to become involved, and the team must determine whether the disappearance was an accident, suicide, or murder. The episode establishes Jasper’s reluctance to return and the pressure beginning to draw him back into investigations. [c009][c010]
Episode 2 — “September Gardens”
Zelda takes Jasper to a retirement home to meet her new date, but the social visit turns into a murder investigation. Jasper and Dan work together on the case, while Maiya attempts to move them toward a joint therapy session. The episode combines the procedural mystery with Zelda’s developing personal life and the team’s continuing effort to support Jasper.
Episode 3 — “The Inspection”
A school inspector is found murdered after what appears to be a burglary. The apparent break-in does not fully account for the killing: the method and the stolen items point toward a more complicated explanation. The episode also raises questions about a possible relationship between Jasper and the Dean. [c009][c011]
Episode 4 — “You Can’t Kill Me”
An actress is stabbed on stage with a knife that should have been a prop, and the director’s daughter is attacked as well. Because Helena knows the family involved, Jasper seeks her help. The hour also advances Zelda’s relationship with the Dean and gives Chloe a difficult investigative decision.
Episode 5 — “The Perfect Murder”
Adelaide’s painting is vandalized and the owner of the gallery is killed. Jasper is distracted by an impending DNA test involving him and Wilfred, so the investigation unfolds alongside potentially disruptive family revelations. The episode places the mystery and Jasper’s questions about his identity on equal footing. [c009]

Production and setting
Professor T. is produced by Eagle Eye Drama, part of ITV Studios, for ITV and PBS Distribution. ITV’s production information identifies Jo McGrath as Eagle Eye Drama’s executive producer and chief content officer. Beta Film holds worldwide distribution rights, while PBS Distribution holds North American rights. The production is associated with Happy Duck Films and the original producer Skyline Entertainment NV, and receives support from the Belgian Tax Shelter. [c001][c013]
Cambridge remains central to the show’s identity. The safer production description is that the program has been filmed in Belgium and Cambridge; that should not be simplified into a claim that every scene was filmed at Cambridge University. [c014]
What the Season 4 news means for viewers
- It is not an upcoming, unconfirmed season: Season 4 has aired and has documented digital and physical release options.
- “Season” and “series” refer to the same installment: U.S. coverage generally says Season 4, while U.K. coverage may say Series 4.
- The season is both procedural and character-driven: Each episode supplies a separate crime, while Jasper’s grief, romance, family history, and return to police work continue across the six episodes.
- Availability is market-specific: PBS broadcast, PBS Passport, Prime Video, PBS Masterpiece, and DVD do not necessarily offer identical dates or access in every country.
- There is no need to wait for Season 4 confirmation: The remaining uncertainty concerns local schedules, pricing, stock, and territory—not whether the season exists.
