Cyrus dances, works out, swims and moves alone through the video. The progression ends with a more self-possessed black-suit sequence, giving the clip a clear visual arc: apparent heartbreak gives way to control, confidence and independence.
That arc reflects the song’s central message of self-sufficiency after a breakup. Sony Music described “Flowers” as an expression of self-empowerment, while ABC News characterized its narrative as a person realizing that they can thrive outside a relationship.
The video was filmed at a Los Angeles house identified in Disney+ press material as the former residence of Frank Sinatra. That location provides production context, but it does not establish a particular personal meaning or prove that the song is about any one former partner.

What “Flowers” is about
“Flowers” was widely interpreted as a breakup and self-love anthem, and its lyrics and video both emphasize Cyrus’s ability to care for and sustain herself. Coverage also drew attention to the song’s timing around Liam Hemsworth’s birthday and discussed Cyrus’s former relationship with him.

However, Cyrus’s official promotional material presents the song in broader terms—self-love, courage and independence—without naming Hemsworth as its subject. It is more accurate to describe the song as a widely interpreted breakup anthem than to state as fact that it was definitively written about him.
How the song fits into Endless Summer Vacation
“Flowers” is the opening track and lead single from Endless Summer Vacation, Cyrus’s follow-up to 2020’s Plastic Hearts. Columbia Records announced the album for global release on March 10, 2023.
