The central answer for Inkawu idliw’ilila long questions is crime without reward. Thantaswa’s pursuit of wealth, Mfuneko’s corruption, Msindisi’s murder, the fraudulent inheritance scheme and the pressure created by investigator Mfezeko Mapheza form one chain of cause and consequence. A high-scoring imibuzo emide response uses that chain as an argument instead of reproducing the plot as disconnected events.

Inkawu idliw’ilila is best studied as a crime novel about greed, dishonest love, abuse of authority and the consequences of trying to obtain wealth through murder. For imibuzo emide (long-answer questions), do not merely retell the plot. Build an argument around the official central idea of crime without reward, then prove it through Thantaswa Ntlontlo, Mfuneko Mnenga, Msindisi Yangaphi, Mfezeko Mapheza, the inheritance conflict, the setting and the ending.

This guide explains the novel’s classification, plot, characters, themes, title, social setting and examination method. It is study support rather than a replacement for the prescribed isiXhosa text. Where an ending or detail comes from a secondary summary rather than the full authorized novel, that limitation is stated clearly.

Spoiler warning: The discussion below covers the murder, inheritance schemes and reported ending of the novel.

What is Inkawu idliw’ilila?

The catalogue record for the 2008 Oxford University Press Southern Africa edition gives the ISBNs 0195989589 and 9780195989588; the title is also catalogued as a 2008 Xhosa print book. The South African Department of Basic Education identifies it in its official Mind the Gap guide as a Grade 12 isiXhosa Home Language novel.

Search results may place the book under labels such as social science, mystery, thriller or crime fiction. The official guide specifically discusses its crime-novel characteristics and presents crime without reward as its central theme.

Plot summary: how the crime develops

1. Thantaswa chooses wealth over sincere love

Thantaswa Ntlontlo meets the wealthy businessman Msindisi Yangaphi and is attracted to the status and material security associated with him. Her marriage to Msindisi is therefore presented as compromised from the beginning: genuine affection is overshadowed by material ambition. This is the foundation of the novel’s moral argument. A relationship that should be based on trust becomes a route to money.

Thantaswa also has a previous relationship with Mfuneko Mnenga, who is the father of her child. She hides important information and uses forms of emotional, religious and social respectability to protect her interests. Her public image and private motives increasingly diverge. This contrast is important in an essay because it shows characterization through conduct rather than through description alone.

2. Marriage, polygamy and jealousy intensify the conflict

Msindisi’s family discusses polygamy and his connection with Siziwe. The possibility of another relationship makes Thantaswa insecure, but the novel does not present her response as a simple defence of romantic love. Her decisions remain closely tied to possession, status and financial advantage. The marriage conflict brings customary expectations, family authority and individual desire into the same social space.

At this point, the old relationship between Thantaswa and Mfuneko resurfaces. Their renewed alliance is not a return to an innocent romance. It becomes a partnership shaped by secrecy, adultery, resentment and the prospect of obtaining Msindisi’s wealth.

3. The plan against Msindisi

Thantaswa prepares for Msindisi’s journey to Durban while arranging for hired attackers to intercept and kill him. The official study material records that Msindisi is shot and that his body is left in a vehicle. His death converts the characters’ private greed into a serious criminal conspiracy.

Thantaswa’s response is significant. She does not show the sincere remorse that might lead to moral repair. Instead, the murder becomes the first step in a larger attempt to control the investigation and secure the expected financial benefit. Mfuneko’s professional knowledge makes the situation even more dangerous because he can use his position and understanding of investigation to assist concealment.

4. The investigation produces further violence

Mfezeko Mapheza becomes a major obstacle to the conspirators. He is presented as a persistent investigator whose work increases pressure on Thantaswa and Mfuneko. Their response is not confession or repentance. They attempt to obstruct the investigation and act against Mapheza, showing how one crime generates another.

Foliom 48 Pack Blank Kraft Notebooks A5, Bulk Unlined Journals, 80gsm Paper
  • STOCK THE SUPPLY CLOSET — Get 48 individual A5 kraft notebooks, each with 30 sheets (60 pages) of blank unlined paper. Enough to equip a double classroom set, cover a full department team, or supply a semester of workshops without reordering. One box handles the whole program — from the first day of school to winter break, with spares to spare
  • 80GSM THICK PAPER, ZERO BLEED-THROUGH — Inner pages are made from 80gsm acid-free paper, tested with ballpoint, fountain, gel, and brush pens. Ink stays on the surface without bleeding or feathering to the next page. The lightly cream-tinted stock reduces eye strain during long writing sessions. Acid-free archival quality keeps your notes and sketches sharp for years
  • EXACTLY A5 — MORE PORTABLE THAN COMPOSITION — Measures 8.3 x 5.5 inches (A5): more compact and lighter than standard composition notebooks (9.75 x 7.5 inches), which means it slips into student backpacks, tote bags, and desk drawers without the bulk. Same blank-page freedom as a composition notebook — in a size that fits every student's bag
  • STURDY KRAFT COVER THAT LASTS — FSC-certified natural kraft cardstock cover withstands daily backpack tossing, stack pressure, and humidity. Sewn-thread binding keeps pages intact even when opened flat 180°. The uncoated brown surface is sticker-friendly and writable — students can personalize with their name, washi tape, or stamps for instant ownership
  • DEPARTMENT-READY FROM DAY ONE — Distribute across multiple classrooms, staff teams, or workshop sessions without splitting orders. The blank format works for every grade level and department — writing journals, sketchbooks, observation logs, meeting notes, or field research records. Keep extras in the supply closet; the kraft cover holds its shape through repeated use, and blank pages never go out of date

This escalation is central to the thriller structure. Murder requires concealment; concealment requires manipulation; investigation creates fear; fear encourages further violence. The plot’s tension comes not only from the question of who is responsible, but from the way the conspirators’ attempts to protect themselves destroy more lives and expose the corruption of official authority.

5. The inheritance becomes another target

The inheritance is the material object around which the later deception develops. Msindisi changes his estate arrangements so that his property is intended for his son. That decision threatens the conspirators’ expectation that Msindisi’s death will make them wealthy.

The conflict therefore moves from murder to fraudulent documentation and manipulation of estate arrangements. Mdlambila is associated with this legal and inheritance manipulation. The attempted redirection of the inheritance shows that the crime is not one isolated act: the characters repeatedly alter documents, relationships and official processes in an effort to turn violence into property.

6. The ending is punitive, not triumphant

The official study material presents the conspirators’ violence as ultimately destructive and stresses that those who seek wealth through murder become victims of the system they have created. Secondary plot summaries report that Thantaswa shoots Mfuneko and then shoots herself, with both dying. Because that specific final sequence is not established in the supplied research from a direct consultation of the complete authorized novel, learners should verify the wording and details in their own edition or the official study material before using it as a precise quotation-based claim.

Whether discussing the broad moral outcome or the reported final sequence, the important examination point is the same: the anticipated reward never produces secure prosperity. Crime brings fear, betrayal, punishment and destruction rather than the success imagined by the criminals.

Main characters and what they prove in an essay

Character Role in the plot Best essay uses
Thantaswa Ntlontlo The principal character; she marries Msindisi while pursuing wealth, renews her relationship with Mfuneko and participates in the plan against her husband. Greed, dishonest love, manipulation, adultery, moral decline, appearance versus reality and crime without reward.
Msindisi Yangaphi A wealthy businessman, Thantaswa’s husband and the murder victim. His estate and family decisions drive later conflict. Wealth as a source of power, the danger of treating relationships as transactions, polygamy and inheritance.
Mfuneko Mnenga Thantaswa’s former partner and the father of her child. He is presented as a police officer or investigator whose professional position is abused for personal gain. Corruption, betrayal, abuse of authority, criminal partnership, manipulation and characterization through naming.
Mfezeko Mapheza The persistent investigator who threatens to expose the conspiracy. Law versus corruption, investigative pressure, justice and the consequences of trying to silence truth.
Siziwe A woman connected to Msindisi’s family discussions about a possible polygamous marriage. Jealousy, marriage, family expectations, customary structures and the pressure placed on Thantaswa.
Mdlambila Associated with fraudulent estate documentation and the attempted redirection of the inheritance. Legal manipulation, document fraud and the expansion of crime beyond the original murder.
Hired criminals and Siphongo Secondary figures who extend the chain of victimization; Siphongo is associated with traditional healing. The wider social damage of the conspiracy and the fact that innocent or peripheral people can be harmed by greed.

Thantaswa: a morally regressive protagonist

Thantaswa is the clearest vehicle for the novel’s treatment of greed. She is dynamic because the events reveal increasingly more about her deception and willingness to manipulate others, but she is not a conventionally reformed protagonist. Her movement is morally downward. She repeatedly chooses self-interest over honesty, uses social and religious respectability as a mask, and treats people as instruments in a plan for financial security.

A strong answer should avoid calling her simply greedy and stopping there. Explain how the greed operates: it affects the choice of husband, the handling of her previous relationship, her response to the possibility of polygamy, the murder plan and the later inheritance fraud. This chain demonstrates development and consequence.

Mfuneko: authority turned into criminal advantage

Mfuneko is especially useful for a characterization question because his occupation should associate him with public protection and lawful investigation. Instead, his knowledge and position assist concealment and further violence. The 2023 examination paper specifically asks learners to show how Mfuneko lives up to the implication of the name given to him. The safest method is to connect the name prompt to several concrete actions in the novel rather than supplying an unsupported English translation of the name.

Use his relationship with Thantaswa, his role as the father of her child, his participation in the plot, his abuse of professional knowledge and his attempts to obstruct the investigation. Together these details show a man whose official identity and private conduct are sharply opposed.

Major themes

Crime without reward

This is the central theme identified by the DBE guide. The novel’s criminals expect murder and document manipulation to deliver wealth, but the expected reward remains unstable and ultimately destructive. The title’s moral force is reinforced by the way people who pursue wealth without pity become victims of their own criminal system.

  • DIY softcover: Kraft covers can be decorated and painted with your own designs, allowing you to add original artwork or stickers to personalize it.

For an essay, trace the theme through three stages:

  1. Before the murder: wealth distorts Thantaswa’s marriage and motivates the conspiracy.
  2. After the murder: concealment, obstruction and attempts against investigators create additional crimes.
  3. At the ending: the conspirators do not achieve secure prosperity; violence turns back upon them.

Greed and materialism

Money is not merely a setting detail. It determines how Thantaswa evaluates marriage, how the conspirators view Msindisi and how the inheritance becomes more important than human life. Msindisi’s wealth gives him status, but it also makes him a target. The novel therefore examines both the attraction of material success and the destructive choices made in its pursuit.

Dishonest love and adultery

The novel contrasts the language of love with calculation, secrecy and self-interest. Thantaswa’s marriage is materially motivated, while her renewed relationship with Mfuneko undermines marital loyalty. Their relationship is not presented as a refuge from an unhappy marriage; it becomes part of the mechanism that produces violence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Murder, punishment and escalating violence

The plot demonstrates a cause-and-effect pattern: murder leads to concealment, concealment leads to obstruction, investigation produces attempts to silence or discredit the investigator, and the inheritance conflict leads to document fraud. This structure discourages the idea that one criminal act can remain isolated or controlled.

Abuse of authority and corruption

Mfuneko’s conduct gives this theme particular force. His position should support justice, yet he uses professional access and knowledge for personal advantage. The contrast between Mfuneko and Mapheza creates an important opposition: one investigator-like figure helps conceal wrongdoing, while the other persists in exposing it.

Gender, marriage and customary expectation

The discussions of polygamy and Siziwe place marriage within a tension between family or customary expectations and individual preference. The novel’s social world is modern in its use of education, business, vehicles, telephones, banking, air travel, formal documents and policing, but it also retains religious and customary structures around marriage, family authority and inheritance.

Do not reduce this to a simplistic traditional-versus-modern argument. Both rural and urban environments contain solidarity, social pressure, deception, status competition and conflicting moral codes. The novel is more interested in how people navigate these overlapping systems than in declaring one setting wholly good and the other wholly bad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The title and its moral logic

The title phrase should be handled carefully. The supplied official material uses it as a judgment connected to the destruction of people caught in the conspirators’ schemes, but the available evidence does not justify presenting a definitive literal English translation without checking an authoritative isiXhosa source or the novel’s own contextual explanation.

For an essay, analyze what the title does in the novel:

  • It functions like a proverb-like warning about ruthless pursuit of success.
  • It applies beyond one isolated victim because the conspiracy harms several people.
  • It gains force as the criminals’ plans generate more suffering and betrayal.
  • It is confirmed by the punitive ending, in which the pursuit of wealth does not lead to lasting reward.

A title question should therefore connect the phrase to Thantaswa and Mfuneko, the victims of their choices, the inheritance scheme and the final consequences. Avoid giving a literal translation as though it were certain if your edition or teacher has not supplied one.

Setting and social context

The action moves through Gcuwa, Mthatha, Dutywa, Centane and Cape Town. Thantaswa is associated with Dutywa and studies in Mthatha; Msindisi is associated with Gcuwa. The honeymoon takes place around Cape Town, including the Waterfront, Table Mountain and Sea Point.

This movement between rural and urban places allows the novel to explore social change without treating geography as a simple moral map. Modern institutions and technologies exist alongside customary authority, religious participation, family pressure and traditional healing. Wealth and education can offer opportunity, but they can also intensify status anxiety and create new ways to hide or organize wrongdoing.

In a setting essay, always explain why the place matters. A list of locations earns little credit on its own. Link each location or setting contrast to marriage, education, wealth, family expectations, investigation or the characters’ decisions.

How to write an imibuzo emide answer

The official 2023 Western Cape Senior Certificate examination paper includes both an essay question and a short-question option on Inkawu idliw’ilila. It specifies an approximate novel or drama essay length of 340–390 words. The paper tests, among other things, Mfuneko’s characterization through his name, his methods against Nqoza, punishments received by Mfuneko and Mdlambila, the character associated with the title phrase, the contrasting endings of Msindisi and Thantaswa, and the novel’s methods of discouraging crime. You can consult the official 2023 IsiXhosa Home Language paper for the wording of the questions.

A reliable structure for 340–390 words

  1. Introduction: 40–55 words. Answer the question directly, name the central argument and identify the characters, theme or technique you will discuss.
  2. Body paragraph 1: 60–75 words. Introduce the first relevant event or character trait and explain how it proves the question.
  3. Body paragraph 2: 60–75 words. Add a different example, not a repetition of the first one, and connect it to the broader conflict.
  4. Body paragraph 3: 60–75 words. Discuss escalation, contrast or a consequence.
  5. Body paragraph 4: 60–75 words. Use the ending, title, investigator or inheritance conflict to complete the argument.
  6. Conclusion: 30–45 words. Return to the question and state the novel’s moral or social significance.

The DBE assessment guidance emphasizes textual evidence, explanation, organization and the connection between claims and events. A plot list is not an argument. After every example, answer the question: What does this reveal, and why does it matter?

Plan for the Mfuneko characterization question

Possible thesis: Mfuneko’s conduct makes the implication of his name meaningful because he turns a position associated with public duty into a tool for betrayal, concealment and personal gain.

  • Begin with his relationship to Thantaswa and his connection to her child, showing the personal history behind the renewed conspiracy.
  • Discuss his abuse of his police or investigative position and professional knowledge.
  • Explain his participation in the plan against Msindisi and the attempts to obstruct the investigation.
  • Use Mapheza as a contrast: Mfuneko exploits investigative knowledge, while Mapheza persists in seeking the truth.
  • End with the punishment or final consequence described in your edition, linking it to the failure of corruption to produce lasting benefit.

Plan for a crime-without-reward question

Start with Thantaswa’s material motivation and the marriage to Msindisi. Move to the hired attackers and Msindisi’s death. Then explain the subsequent obstruction, attacks on the investigation and fraudulent inheritance documents. Finish by showing that the anticipated wealth is replaced by fear, betrayal and destruction. This chronological progression is stronger than discussing greed in isolated general statements.

Plan for a title question

Do not translate the title and stop. Explain how the phrase becomes a moral judgment on the conspirators’ actions, how the harm spreads beyond Msindisi, and how the ending confirms that ruthless pursuit of wealth destroys the people who embrace it. If the question asks which character is referred to by the title, use the exact interpretation and evidence taught in your edition or guide.

Plan for a setting question

Use at least two locations and explain their social significance. For example, connect Mthatha and education to changing opportunities, Gcuwa to Msindisi and wealth, and Cape Town’s honeymoon locations to the public display of prosperity. Then balance this modern world with family, religious and customary expectations. The key argument is that the novel’s setting is socially mixed, not a simple opposition between rural tradition and urban modernity.

Evidence checklist before you submit

  • Have you answered the exact wording of the question in the first paragraph?
  • Have you used three to five specific events, relationships or consequences?
  • Have you explained each example instead of merely naming it?
  • Have you included the beginning, escalation and ending for a theme question?
  • Have you distinguished Thantaswa’s material motives from genuine love?
  • Have you shown why Mfuneko’s professional position matters?
  • Have you used Mapheza as a contrast or source of investigative pressure?
  • Have you connected the inheritance documents to the wider cycle of crime?
  • Have you treated the title as a recurring moral judgment rather than an unsupported translation?
  • Have you checked the exact ending, spelling and page references in your edition?
  • Is the response close to the required 340–390 words if the examination question specifies that range?

Common mistakes to avoid

Retelling instead of analyzing

Writing that Thantaswa meets Msindisi, he is killed and an investigation follows is only a summary. Add interpretation: the sequence shows how material ambition transforms marriage into a criminal transaction and how crime produces further crime.

Calling Thantaswa a victim without qualification

The marriage and polygamy conflict create pressure, but the study material also presents Thantaswa as an active planner who arranges the attack and does not show sincere remorse. A balanced answer can acknowledge social pressure while still analyzing agency and responsibility.

Ignoring Mfuneko’s authority

Mfuneko is not simply Thantaswa’s accomplice. His professional position makes his conduct an example of institutional corruption and explains why he can help obstruct justice.

Inventing quotations or translations

Do not copy long passages from a study guide, invent dialogue, assign page numbers from another edition or give a definitive English translation of the title or a character’s name without authoritative support. Paraphrase accurately and verify quotations in the prescribed novel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating the study guide as the novel

The DBE PDF is valuable revision material, but it contains commentary and extracted material. It may not match every pagination or wording choice in the 2008, revised 2015 or digital 2016 edition. Use the edition in front of you for exact textual evidence.

Bottom line for learners

The strongest Inkawu idliw’ilila long answer makes one clear claim and follows the chain from desire to crime to consequence. Thantaswa’s materialism, Mfuneko’s corrupted authority, Msindisi’s wealth, Mapheza’s persistence and the inheritance fraud all contribute to the same moral pattern: violence pursued for financial gain does not deliver the promised reward. Read the prescribed novel, use the DBE guide for revision, and turn every plot detail into an explained piece of evidence.
