Watch the Jurassic Park movies in release order: begin with Jurassic Park (1993), continue through the original trilogy and the three Jurassic World films, and finish with Jurassic World Rebirth (2025). For the seven theatrical features, release order is also the practical story chronology.

The Jurassic Park movies in release order

For a first-time watch, use release order. It is also the practical story order for the seven theatrical films: the original Jurassic Park trilogy, the three-film Jurassic World era, and Jurassic World Rebirth.

  1. Jurassic Park (1993)
  2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
  3. Jurassic Park III (2001)
  4. Jurassic World (2015)
  5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
  6. Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
  7. Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)

Want all seven films in one set? The Jurassic World 7-Movie Collection 4K Ultra HD is the most complete physical-media option, while Universal also lists the saga in Blu-ray and DVD editions. Check your local retailer for current pricing and availability.

1. Jurassic Park (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s original film introduces the central premise: billionaire John Hammond has created a dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar using genetically engineered prehistoric DNA. Before the park can open, paleontologist Alan Grant, paleobotanist Ellie Sattler, mathematician Ian Malcolm, and Hammond’s grandchildren are invited to inspect it.

A systems failure turns the demonstration tour into a fight for survival. The film establishes the franchise’s most important characters, the work of geneticist Henry Wu, and the dangers of treating a living ecosystem as a controlled attraction. It is the essential starting point because every later film deals with the consequences of Hammond’s experiment.

2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

The second film shifts much of the action to Isla Sorna, a separate island where InGen bred dinosaurs before transporting them to Isla Nublar. Ian Malcolm returns as the lead character after being drawn into an expedition involving the island’s free-roaming animals.

The Lost World expands the setting beyond the failed park and asks what happens when dinosaurs are studied, captured, and brought into a human city. It follows the original film directly and should not be confused with a reboot or a separate continuity.

3. Jurassic Park III (2001)

Sam Neill returns as Alan Grant in the third original-era film. Grant is persuaded to visit Isla Sorna, where a search-and-rescue mission quickly becomes another struggle to escape the island’s predators.

The movie continues the Isla Sorna storyline begun in The Lost World. It is the conclusion of the original Jurassic Park trilogy, although the wider franchise later brings back Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm.

4. Jurassic World (2015)

After the original trilogy, the franchise jumps forward to a new generation and a functioning dinosaur resort on the original Isla Nublar site. The park has succeeded commercially, but its operators keep creating larger and more dangerous attractions to maintain public interest.

This film introduces velociraptor trainer Owen Grady and park executive Claire Dearing. It also re-establishes the original genetic-engineering premise in a new form and begins the Jurassic World trilogy. The fourteen-year gap between Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World is a release gap; you do not need any additional film to bridge it.

5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

Set three years after the destruction of Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom returns Owen and Claire to Isla Nublar. Their mission begins with the threatened dinosaurs on the island but develops into a much broader question about whether these engineered animals should be saved, owned, or allowed to exist outside controlled parks.

The film extends the consequences of Jurassic World from a single resort to the wider world. Its ending sets up the changed status quo that Jurassic World Dominion explores.

6. Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

Dominion follows the events of Fallen Kingdom, in which dinosaurs are no longer confined to isolated islands and laboratory compounds. Owen and Claire remain central, while the film brings them together with original-series characters Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm.

That crossover makes Dominion the connecting film between the two franchise eras. It is the sixth theatrical feature overall and the conclusion of the main Owen-and-Claire storyline before the series moves to a new central team.

7. Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)

Jurassic World Rebirth is the seventh theatrical film and a sequel within the same film continuity. It takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, but it is designed as a new chapter rather than a direct continuation led by Owen Grady and Claire Dearing.

The story follows a covert extraction team seeking dinosaur DNA from an abandoned research facility. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey lead the new principal cast. Because the film follows Dominion, it belongs after the first six movies even though its characters and mission are substantially new.

Release order and chronological order

For these seven theatrical films, release order is the recommended order and effectively matches the story chronology:

Film Release year Franchise era
Jurassic Park 1993 Original trilogy
The Lost World: Jurassic Park 1997 Original trilogy
Jurassic Park III 2001 Original trilogy
Jurassic World 2015 Jurassic World trilogy
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 2018 Jurassic World trilogy
Jurassic World Dominion 2022 Jurassic World trilogy
Jurassic World Rebirth 2025 New chapter after Dominion

There is no useful alternate viewing sequence that improves the story. Watching the films in chronological order produces the same seven-film lineup, so release order is the simplest choice for both newcomers and returning viewers.

The two main Jurassic eras

The original Jurassic Park trilogy

  • Jurassic Park (1993)
  • The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
  • Jurassic Park III (2001)

The original trilogy begins with the creation and collapse of Jurassic Park, then moves to Isla Sorna and the continuing effects of InGen’s dinosaur research. Alan Grant is the principal through-line of the first and third films, while Ian Malcolm leads The Lost World.

The Jurassic World trilogy and Rebirth

  • Jurassic World (2015)
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
  • Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
  • Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)

The 2015 film moves the story back to Isla Nublar, where Jurassic World has become a successful resort. Fallen Kingdom deals with the aftermath of its destruction, and Dominion examines a world in which dinosaurs have spread beyond the islands. Rebirth continues that continuity while introducing a new mission and new leading characters.

Is Jurassic World Rebirth a sequel?

Yes. Jurassic World Rebirth is the seventh theatrical feature in the same Jurassic film saga and is set after Jurassic World Dominion. It is not a remake, prequel, or spin-off. However, its new cast and extraction-mission premise make it a fresh entry point in tone and character focus. Watching the earlier six films first provides the clearest understanding of the franchise’s history, but Rebirth is still the next film in order.

  • Best for a complete collection: the seven-film 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, or DVD set.
  • Best for existing collectors: the standalone physical release of Jurassic World Rebirth.
  • Best for digital viewers: check the movie-rental and purchase listings available in your country.

Streaming subscriptions and digital storefront catalogs change frequently, and availability can differ by territory. For that reason, it is safer to check your local platform or retailer rather than rely on a permanent streaming-home claim.

How long does the complete series take to watch?

The seven-film collection’s listed total runtime is 14 hours and 44 minutes. That is roughly one full day of viewing without extended breaks, or an easy weekend marathon if divided across several sessions.

It does not include the animated series, television specials, short films, theme-park attractions, video games, or Michael Crichton’s original novels. Those works may expand the franchise, but they do not change the viewing order of the theatrical movies.
