Sean “Diddy” Combs was reportedly placed on suicide watch at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center shortly after his September 2024 arrest, according to sources cited by PEOPLE. The report did not establish that he attempted suicide, expressed suicidal intent, or received a mental-health diagnosis.

What the report said

Sean “Diddy” Combs was reportedly placed on suicide watch at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center shortly after his September 2024 arrest, according to sources cited by PEOPLE. The report did not establish that Combs had attempted suicide, expressed suicidal intent, or received a mental-health diagnosis.

The information was attributed to unnamed sources rather than a publicly released Bureau of Prisons medical or custody record. Those sources described the heightened monitoring as preventative, saying Combs was reportedly in shock and that his mental state was unclear. The precise reason for the designation and how long it lasted were not publicly established.

When Combs was placed on suicide watch

Combs was arrested in Manhattan on September 16, 2024, on federal charges. On September 17, he was remanded to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after pleading not guilty and being denied bail twice, according to contemporaneous reporting.

On September 20, 2024, PEOPLE reported that he was on suicide watch while awaiting trial. The Los Angeles Times separately reported the placement the same day, also relying on sources. That coverage noted that some sources characterized this type of monitoring as routine during the early period of detention.

In general, suicide watch refers to heightened supervisory precautions that require frequent observation. That definition describes a custodial procedure; it does not, by itself, prove that a particular detainee is suicidal or has made an attempt.

What “suicide watch” did—and did not—mean in this case

The available reporting supports a narrow conclusion: jail officials reportedly used increased observation for a period after Combs entered federal detention, and sources described the measure as preventative.

It does not support the following claims:

  • That Combs attempted suicide.
  • That he told officials he intended to harm himself.
  • That he was diagnosed with a specific mental-health disorder.
  • That the monitoring indicated guilt, innocence, or the likely outcome of his criminal case.

Because the report was based on unnamed sources, rather than an officially released custody or medical record, the details should be treated as reported information—not as a complete account of Combs’s mental state or treatment.

He was reportedly removed from suicide watch later in September

By September 29–30, 2024, PEOPLE and other outlets reported that Combs was no longer on suicide watch. Reports also said that members of his family had visited him at the detention facility.

That update concerned the pretrial period in September 2024. It should not be confused with later defense claims about Combs being under constant suicide watch during a different period of incarceration. Those later claims addressed a separate timeframe and require separate sourcing.

Charges at the time of the report

When the original story was published, Combs faced federal charges including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and transportation for purposes of prostitution. The charges were allegations at that stage, not findings that the alleged conduct had been proved.

The suicide-watch report was a custodial-status story. It did not resolve any of those allegations, and it should not be used to imply that Combs’s detention conditions were evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

What happened later in the federal case

The case did not remain at the “awaiting trial” stage. On July 2, 2025, a jury acquitted Combs of racketeering-conspiracy and sex-trafficking charges but convicted him on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

On October 3, 2025, a federal judge sentenced him to 50 months in prison and five years of supervised release for those convictions. The later verdict and sentence are legally distinct from the September 2024 report about detention monitoring.

Why the wording matters

Reports about suicide watch can easily be overstated. “Placed on suicide watch” describes a reported detention precaution. It is not interchangeable with “attempted suicide,” “was suicidal,” or “was diagnosed with a mental illness.” In this case, the public reporting did not establish those stronger claims.

The same care is necessary when describing the criminal case. The jury’s acquittals on the racketeering-conspiracy and sex-trafficking charges must be distinguished from the two transportation convictions and the later sentence. Allegations, charges, acquittals, convictions, and sentencing are different legal events and should not be collapsed into one description.

Bottom line

Sources told PEOPLE in September 2024 that Combs had been placed on suicide watch at the Brooklyn detention center shortly after his arrest. The sources described the measure as preventative, and the report did not establish suicidal intent, an attempt, or a diagnosis. Later reports said the monitoring had ended by late September 2024. The report was a historical account of his early detention—not a current statement about his mental health or a prediction about his criminal case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Sean “Diddy” Combs attempt suicide?

No. The September 2024 reporting said only that Combs had reportedly been placed on suicide watch and that sources characterized the measure as preventative. It did not establish that he attempted suicide or expressed suicidal intent.

Was Combs still on suicide watch after September 2024?

Reports said the monitoring had ended by September 29–30, 2024. That update referred to the early pretrial detention period and should not be conflated with later claims about monitoring during a different period of incarceration.

Did suicide watch affect the outcome of Combs’s criminal case?

No. Suicide watch is a custodial monitoring precaution and is not evidence of guilt or innocence. Combs’s later case produced a split verdict: acquittals on racketeering-conspiracy and sex-trafficking charges, convictions on two transportation-to-engage-in-prostitution counts, and a 50-month sentence imposed on October 3, 2025.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Combs was reportedly placed on suicide watch after his September 2024 arrest, but the available reporting did not establish that he attempted suicide, expressed suicidal intent, or had a specific diagnosis. The monitoring was later reported to have ended, and the criminal case subsequently resulted in acquittals on some counts, convictions on two others, and a 50-month sentence.
