Rich Homie Quan died on September 5, 2024, at age 34—not 33. The Atlanta rapper and singer helped define the city’s melodic trap era through “Type of Way,” Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle,” “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” and his 2018 debut album Rich as in Spirit.

Rich Homie Quan died on September 5, 2024, at his home in Atlanta. He was 34, not 33. Born Dequantes Devontay Lamar on October 4, 1989, the rapper died roughly one month before his 35th birthday. The age discrepancy appeared in some early reports, but the researched record and date of birth establish his age at death as 34. [C1][C2][C3]

Quan leaves behind a catalog that helped define Atlanta’s melodic trap era: songs built around plaintive melodies, repeated hooks, conversational phrasing, and lyrics about hardship, ambition, loyalty, family, and survival. His rise through mixtapes, “Type of Way,” Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle,” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” made him one of the most recognizable voices in mid-2010s Southern hip-hop.

Who was Rich Homie Quan?

Rich Homie Quan was an Atlanta rapper and singer whose style sat between conventional rap and emotionally direct singing. He could deliver street-centered writing with a loose, conversational cadence, then turn a phrase into a vulnerable, memorable hook. The Recording Academy described him as an important contributor to Atlanta’s melody-infused trap sound, while AllMusic emphasized the melodic, hook-focused character of his music and its recurring themes of struggle and striving. Quan’s path into music was shaped by difficult experiences. He began pursuing a career seriously after serving a prison sentence related to burglary and after losing an early mentor. His first important releases were mixtapes, including I Go In on Every Song, Still Goin In, and Still Goin In: Reloaded. Those projects established the autobiographical and aspirational tone that would remain central to his work. [C1][C5]

He emerged during a period when Atlanta was exerting unusual influence over mainstream rap. Future, Young Thug, Migos, and other Atlanta artists were expanding the possibilities of trap music, and Quan contributed a distinctive vocal approach to that transformation. He did not single-handedly invent melodic trap, but he helped make an openly tuneful, emotionally exposed form of rap feel natural within street-oriented Southern hip-hop.

“Type of Way” made Rich Homie Quan a national name

Quan’s major breakthrough arrived in 2013 with “Type of Way.” The song’s elastic melody and instantly repeatable hook gave it broad reach beyond Atlanta, and it was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2014. The record made Quan visible as more than a promising local rapper: he was a singer-rapper with a sound that could carry a national hit. [C1][C6]

His profile grew through collaborations, including an appearance on YG’s “My N—” remix and a contribution to Travis Scott’s “Mamacita.” These appearances placed him alongside major artists while reinforcing the qualities that set him apart: an instinct for hooks, an emotionally flexible delivery, and a willingness to move between rapping and singing without treating them as separate modes. Rich Gang, Young Thug, and “Lifestyle”

Quan’s most consequential collaborative period came through Rich Gang, the Cash Money-associated collective involving Birdman, Young Thug, and Rich Homie Quan. Quan and Young Thug developed a vocal chemistry that was unusually fluid. Rather than simply alternating verses, they often sounded as though they were passing melodies and phrases back and forth.

That chemistry can be heard on “Get TF Out My Face,” “Tell Em,” and especially “Lifestyle.” The latter became a platinum-certified record and helped codify the emotionally elastic, melody-driven sound associated with Atlanta rap in the middle of the 2010s. [C1][C7]

It is important, however, not to reduce Quan’s career to his partnership with Young Thug. Rich Gang gave his sound a particularly visible platform, but his melodic instincts were already apparent in his mixtapes and “Type of Way.” His contribution to the period was both collaborative and individual: he could fit into a shared Atlanta sound while remaining identifiable within it.

“Flex” and the move from mixtape star to album artist

Quan followed his breakthrough with “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015. The song reached the Billboard Hot 100 and became a multi-platinum hit. Contemporary RIAA reporting documents a double-platinum certification; some later coverage has described the song as triple platinum, so the more precise wording depends on the certification record being cited. “Flex” also illustrated the strength and limitation of Quan’s public image. He was exceptionally effective at making a hook feel casual and immediate, but his catalog was sometimes discussed primarily through hit singles and collaborations. Behind those records was a longer mixtape career and a more personal body of writing than the “melodic hitmaker” label alone suggested.

Rich as in Spirit gave his story a fuller form

After years of mixtapes, label complications, and an uneven public presence, Quan released Rich as in Spirit in 2018. It was his debut studio album and reached the Top 40 of the Billboard 200, according to AllMusic’s career summary. [C1][C4]

The album matters because it presents Quan as more than a singles artist. Its writing returns to hardship, patience, family, ambition, and self-belief—the subjects that had made his earlier work feel personal. The album’s title itself reflects the tension in his music: material success mattered, but so did the values and relationships he believed had carried him through difficult periods.

Quan continued releasing music independently after the album, including the 2022 project Family & Mula – Reloaded. By the time of his death, Billboard Canada’s obituary reporting, citing Luminate data, said his catalog had accumulated approximately 3.34 billion official U.S. on-demand streams. That number is a time-specific industry estimate rather than a permanent lifetime total, since streaming figures continue to change. [C10]

For listeners who want a physical introduction to his best-known songs, the Rich Homie Quan Legacy of Hits CD is one relevant option. The compilation is promoted through Quan’s official website and includes “Type of Way,” “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” and “Walk Thru”; retailer listings describe CD and vinyl editions. Inventory, price, pressing, and seller should be checked before purchase.

What made Rich Homie Quan important to Atlanta rap?

Quan’s importance is stylistic as much as commercial. He helped normalize a version of rap in which a performer could sound plaintive, tuneful, and emotionally exposed without leaving behind street-centered subject matter. His songs could move from boastfulness to insecurity, from celebration to exhaustion, sometimes within the same performance.

That combination reflected Atlanta’s broader musical ecosystem. The city’s rap tradition has long valued rhythm, repetition, vocal personality, and memorable phrasing, but Quan’s particular contribution was the conversational vulnerability of his melodies. He often sounded as though he were thinking aloud rather than delivering a polished speech.

It would be too strong to claim that Quan invented melodic trap or single-handedly created Atlanta’s modern sound. His influence is better understood as part of a regional evolution involving multiple artists and producers. Still, his records helped establish a template later melodic rappers could draw from: sing the hook, bend the cadence, keep the language conversational, and let emotional openness coexist with toughness. Rich Homie Quan’s death and confirmed cause

News of Quan’s death broke on September 5, 2024. Initial reports announced his death before a medical cause had been established. That distinction matters because early coverage sometimes included speculation that was not supported by official findings.

On October 2, the Fulton County medical examiner reported that Quan’s cause of death was acute multiple-drug intoxication involving fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, and promethazine. The medical examiner classified the manner of death as accidental. [C2][C3]

The confirmed account should therefore be presented chronologically: Quan died on September 5; the cause was not immediately known; and the medical examiner later released the determination. Unverified rumors about his final days, personal disputes, or substance use should not be treated as fact.

Family, funeral, and Atlanta remembrance

Quan’s family announced his death and held a public celebration of life in Atlanta on September 17, 2024. Coverage of the memorial focused on his family role, his identity as a father, and his lasting connection to the city where he built his career. The Recording Academy reported that he left behind four children. [C1][12]

Local reporting also included remarks from his father, Corey Lamar, and details about the public memorial arrangements. The remembrance placed Quan’s career in a broader context: he was not only a performer associated with a particular era of Atlanta rap, but also a son, father, and community figure whose work remained closely tied to the city.

How to start listening to Rich Homie Quan

A useful entry point is to follow the career in stages:

  1. Start with “Type of Way.” It captures the breakthrough combination of melody, repetition, confidence, and vulnerability.
  2. Listen to Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle.” This shows Quan’s chemistry with Young Thug and his place in Atlanta’s collaborative trap moment.
  3. Add “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).” The song demonstrates his gift for turning a simple vocal phrase into a durable pop-rap hook.
  4. Move to Rich as in Spirit. The album offers a fuller sense of his personal themes and ambitions beyond individual hits.
  5. Explore the mixtapes. I Go In on Every Song, Still Goin In, and Still Goin In: Reloaded provide the clearest route into the autobiographical foundation of his sound.

Listeners and collectors interested in his album career can also look for Rich Homie Quan’s Rich as in Spirit on vinyl or CD. The official website has promoted physical editions, but formats and availability can change. A physical release is best treated as a current retail listing, not a guarantee of permanent stock.

For a broader physical overview, Rich Homie Quan physical albums may include Legacy of Hits and editions of Rich as in Spirit through official or third-party retailers. Buyers should distinguish official-store listings from marketplace listings, confirm the seller and format, and avoid assuming that a retailer listing implies endorsement by Quan’s family or estate.

That balance made him an important voice in the city’s 2010s rap expansion. “Type of Way,” “Lifestyle,” “Flex,” and Rich as in Spirit document different parts of his career, from breakthrough hitmaker to collaborator to album artist.
