Ellen DeGeneres did not disappear from Hollywood because of one event or a documented industry ban. Her retreat followed the end of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the fallout from 2020 workplace allegations, her decision to make a final stand-up special and a move to the English countryside that she later said was accelerated by Donald Trump’s 2024 reelection.
Ellen DeGeneres did not leave Hollywood because of a documented industry-wide ban. Her retreat was the result of several overlapping developments: The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended after 19 seasons in 2022; a damaging 2020 workplace controversy weakened her public image; she chose to close out her stand-up career; and she and Portia de Rossi moved from California to the Cotswolds in England. DeGeneres later said Donald Trump’s 2024 reelection was the immediate reason they decided to stay in the U.K.
That makes the most accurate description a self-directed retreat shaped by reputational fallout, career fatigue, political disappointment and a desire for a quieter rural life—not a formal expulsion from show business.
The short version: what happened to Ellen’s career?
For much of the 2000s and 2010s, DeGeneres was one of American television’s most visible entertainers. Her daytime talk show made her a daily presence in millions of homes, while her comedy, film appearances and production work extended her reach beyond the program.

That position changed sharply after 2020. Current and former employees described a workplace allegedly marked by fear, intimidation, racism and poor management. The allegations did not all concern DeGeneres personally: many were directed at executive producers and senior managers. But the criticism still affected her because the program’s public identity was closely tied to her name and her “be kind” image.
WarnerMedia investigated the production. Three senior producers subsequently left, and DeGeneres apologized to staff while acknowledging that she had responsibility for the workplace associated with her name. The controversy did not prove that she had been legally barred from Hollywood, but it damaged the relationship between her public persona and the show’s reported internal culture. CBS News’ reporting on the allegations and investigation provides the essential background.
Why did The Ellen DeGeneres Show end?
The program concluded in 2022 after a 19-season run. Its ending followed the workplace controversy, but it should not be described as a simple cancellation caused by one scandal.
DeGeneres announced that she wanted to finish the show after reaching what she regarded as the end of its natural creative run. At the same time, the allegations had plainly changed the program’s cultural position. The show that had once been marketed around warmth, generosity and celebrity accessibility was now being discussed through the lens of employee accounts and management failures.

In other words, two things can be true at once: the talk show’s conclusion was presented as a planned career decision, and the 2020 controversy made continuing the old version of the Ellen brand much more difficult. The program’s ending removed her most important regular platform in Hollywood television.
Did Ellen say she was “kicked out of show business”?
Yes, but the phrase needs context. In Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, released by Netflix on September 24, 2024, DeGeneres used the idea that she had been “kicked out of show business” as part of her comedic framing of the backlash and its consequences. Netflix describes the production as the final comedy special of her career.
That wording is not evidence of a formal Hollywood blacklist. There is no established finding that an industry authority expelled her, nor is there a documented blanket prohibition on her working. It more accurately expresses how she experienced the collapse of her former cultural position and the reduction of professional opportunities after the controversy.
For viewers who want to see how DeGeneres addressed that transition herself, Netflix’s official page for Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval confirms the special’s identity and final-special positioning. Availability can vary by country and may change.

When did Ellen DeGeneres move to the U.K.?
DeGeneres and de Rossi relocated from Montecito, California, to the Cotswolds in November 2024. Early reports indicated that they had initially bought the English property as a part-time residence and expected to spend only several months a year there, rather than immediately treating the move as a permanent departure from the United States. The Independent’s account of the move distinguishes those early plans from what happened later.
The Cotswolds, a rural region in south-central England, offered several practical attractions: privacy, more space, distance from Los Angeles’ entertainment industry and a countryside setting suited to de Rossi’s horses. Property coverage has also described the couple’s interest in land and stabling, suggesting that the relocation was not only a political statement but a lifestyle decision with concrete logistical requirements.
Was Donald Trump’s reelection the reason she left America?
It was the immediate catalyst for staying in England, according to DeGeneres herself. During a July 2025 appearance in Cheltenham, she said that she and de Rossi decided to remain in the U.K. the day after Donald Trump was reelected president. She described life in England as simpler and better-feeling for them. Euronews reported her public explanation from that appearance.
This is stronger evidence than earlier reports based on anonymous sources, because it is DeGeneres’ own account. But it should not be expanded into the claim that Trump alone explains every part of the move. The couple had already acquired a Cotswolds home, and the location met longer-term needs involving privacy, rural living and horses. The election appears to have changed a part-time arrangement into a decision to remain.

- November 2024: DeGeneres and de Rossi are reported to have relocated to the Cotswolds.
- July 2025: DeGeneres publicly says Trump’s reelection was the deciding reason they chose to stay in England.
What is Ellen’s new life in the Cotswolds like?
Public glimpses suggest a deliberately private countryside routine rather than a new form of celebrity production. Social-media posts and lifestyle reports have shown or described a renovated farmhouse or estate, dogs, sheep, gardening and lawn work. The emphasis is on home, animals and outdoor space—not studio schedules, red carpets or a daily television audience.
Those glimpses should not be treated as a complete record of the couple’s private life. They show selected moments that DeGeneres or media outlets have made public. Still, the pattern is consistent with her stated desire for a less pressured, more comfortable existence away from Los Angeles.
Horse facilities have been an especially important practical issue. Reports said the couple’s first Cotswolds property did not provide all the stabling and land de Rossi wanted. The home was reportedly listed for about £22.5 million in 2025 as they considered a property with more space. Later reporting in 2026 said the listing had been withdrawn and characterized the estate as a long-term home. Because property listings can change and those reports are not the same as a direct statement from DeGeneres, the status should be understood as reported at those dates, not permanently settled. Homebuilding’s property report and Country Life’s later coverage document the changing picture.

The clearest endpoint is For Your Approval, which Netflix identifies as her final comedy special. During her 2025 Cheltenham appearance, she reportedly ruled out reviving The Ellen DeGeneres Show for a British audience, while also leaving open the question of whether another kind of work might eventually interest her.
That distinction is important. DeGeneres has ended the career format that made her a daily Hollywood fixture, and her public schedule is far quieter. She has not necessarily announced a permanent retirement from every possible creative or business activity. The evidence supports “retreated from show business” or “stepped away from regular entertainment work,” not “was permanently banned.”
What does Ellen’s own writing reveal about the career she left behind?
Readers interested in DeGeneres before the retreat can start with Seriously…I’m Kidding, her personal and career-oriented humor book. It offers a perspective on the entertainer’s earlier public identity and can provide useful context for understanding how far her current rural life is from the highly visible television persona that preceded it.
Her earlier book, My Point…And I Do Have One, is another option for readers interested in her comic essays and pre-talk-show-era voice. These books are snapshots of earlier stages of her career, not explanations of the 2020 workplace allegations or definitive accounts of her move to England.

The most defensible answer is cumulative:
- Her main platform ended. The talk show finished its planned 19-season run in 2022.
- The workplace controversy damaged her brand. Reports of racism, intimidation, fear and management failures made the contrast with her “be kind” image impossible to ignore, even though many allegations focused on producers and managers rather than establishing that DeGeneres personally committed every alleged act.
- She closed out stand-up. The 2024 Netflix special was presented as her final comedy special and gave her a public way to address the period.
- She wanted a different daily life. The Cotswolds offered quiet, privacy, land and room for horses.
- The 2024 election accelerated the decision. DeGeneres said Trump’s reelection turned an initially part-time U.K. arrangement into a choice to stay.
So the story is neither “Ellen was banned” nor simply “Ellen moved because of politics.” It is a career reset shaped by professional backlash and a personal decision to leave the Hollywood routine behind. Her new life in the U.K. appears less like a replacement entertainment empire than an intentional reduction in public exposure: a countryside home, animals, domestic projects and the freedom to decide whether any future work belongs in that quieter life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Ellen DeGeneres banned from Hollywood?
No. The available evidence does not establish that Ellen DeGeneres was legally expelled, formally blacklisted or banned across the entertainment industry. Her “kicked out of show business” wording in her 2024 Netflix special is a comedic description of her career fallout and reduced public position.
Did Ellen DeGeneres move to the U.K. because of Donald Trump?
DeGeneres said during a July 2025 appearance in Cheltenham that she and Portia de Rossi decided to stay in England the day after Donald Trump was reelected. The move also reflected privacy, rural living and the couple’s need for more space and horse stabling.
Is Ellen DeGeneres retired from show business?
The 2024 Netflix special Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval was described by Netflix as the final comedy special of her career. She has stepped away from regular television and stand-up, but that does not prove she will never undertake any future creative work.
