Mel Owens is a former Los Angeles Rams linebacker, California lawyer, father, and the lead of season 2 of ABC’s The Golden Bachelor. ABC announced him as the second Golden Bachelor in April 2025, describing him as a 66-year-old former NFL veteran looking for companionship and a long-term partner.
Owens ultimately chose Peg Munson in the November 12, 2025 finale. The couple exchanged a commitment-style ring, but the episode did not end with a conventional engagement. That distinction matters: the public record supports saying that Owens chose Munson, not that they became engaged or married.

How old is Mel Owens?
Owens was born on December 7. ABC’s official biography gave his birth date and described him as 66 when he was announced as the season 2 lead in 2025, but it did not publish a birth year. Some secondary biographical references identify his birth year as 1958. Because that year is not confirmed in ABC’s biography, it is more accurate to use the dated description “66 when announced” or describe Owens as being in his late 60s rather than present an exact current age as settled fact.

Mel Owens’ NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams
Owens played linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams after the team selected him in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He spent nine seasons with the Rams, from 1981 through 1989.
NFL historical statistics list Owens with:
- 122 games played
- 327 defensive tackles
- 26.5 sacks
- 41 passes defended
- Four interceptions
- Nine fumble recoveries
That football résumé became an important part of his identity on The Golden Bachelor. ABC’s promotional material presented him as a former NFL veteran, while the show used sports language—including the idea of finding a “teammate”—to frame his search for a partner later in life.
What does Mel Owens do for a living?
After his football career, Owens became a lawyer in California. The California State Bar’s attorney database lists him as Mel Tyrae Owens and identifies his license number as 226146. The record also lists the website nbolaw.com.

However, a person’s licensing record does not by itself establish a current firm position or a specific present-day practice specialty. It is therefore safer to describe Owens as a California attorney and former NFL player than to make a more detailed claim about his current legal workload without a newer direct source.
His marriage, divorce, and children
ABC’s biography says Owens experienced the end of his marriage and the death of his father. The network’s account presented those events as part of the background to his later focus on raising his sons and coaching their extracurricular sports teams.
Coverage around the show identifies his former wife as Fabiana Pimentel, also referred to as Fabiana Owens, and his sons as Lucas and Andre. Beyond those broad biographical details, there is little editorial value in publishing private information about his family.

In February 2026, TMZ reported that Owens resolved a financial dispute with his former wife through a payment of nearly $1 million under their divorce settlement. Because that account was based on media coverage citing court records rather than a settlement document independently reviewed here, it should be treated as a reported figure—not as an independently verified financial fact.
How Mel Owens became The Golden Bachelor
ABC announced Owens as the lead of season 2 on April 22, 2025. The network described him as a former NFL veteran turned lawyer who wanted companionship, shared plans, and a committed relationship.
The season premiered on September 24, 2025. Like the first season, it focused on later-life dating and the possibility of a second chance at love. Owens dated 23 women, meeting them through the franchise’s familiar mix of group dates, individual dates, hometown visits, fantasy-suite dates, and a finale filmed in Antigua.
Viewers who want to watch Mel Owens’s season can check ABC’s official program information and its listed streaming availability on Hulu. Availability, catalog access, and regional restrictions can change, so viewers should confirm the current listing before subscribing or watching.
Why was Mel Owens criticized before the premiere?
Before the season aired, Owens faced backlash over comments made during an appearance on the University of Michigan’s In the Trenches podcast. Reports said he discussed wanting contestants within a particular age range and said he did not want women with wigs or artificial hips.

Who were Mel Owens’ final two contestants?
The final romantic arc centered on Peg Munson and Cindy Cullers. Cullers left before the final decision after concerns about Owens’s reluctance to promise an engagement. Munson remained for the finale.
Munson is a retired firefighter and bomb technician from Las Vegas. The finale also included meetings with people important to Owens, including his sons, before the lead made his decision.

No formal engagement was shown in the finale. On November 12, 2025, Owens chose Munson and gave her a ring representing commitment. The moment was framed as the pair choosing one another and continuing their relationship, but it was not presented as a conventional marriage proposal or engagement.
Post-finale interviews described the ending as unconventional and emphasized that Owens and Munson intended to keep getting to know each other. They should not be described as married or engaged unless a later authoritative announcement establishes that status.
Are Mel Owens and Peg Munson still together?
The most careful answer is that Owens chose Peg Munson in the season 2 finale. As of the supplied research cutoff of August 12, 2026, the available public record supports describing their ending as a commitment-style relationship, not a confirmed wedding or formal engagement.
Relationship status can change without an immediate formal announcement. For that reason, “Owens chose Munson in the finale” is more precise than claiming that the two are definitely still together.
The bottom line
Mel Owens brought three distinct careers to The Golden Bachelor: a nine-season run as an NFL linebacker with the Los Angeles Rams, a post-football career as a California lawyer, and a television role as ABC’s second Golden Bachelor. His season was shaped both by criticism of his pre-premiere comments and by its unusually cautious finale.
