After approximately three or four years of writing and revising songs, the BTS member decided that his solo debut should introduce him rather than attempt to contain every musical direction he had considered.
Layover was not designed as V’s complete musical autobiography. For Kim Taehyung, BTS’s first solo album was a deliberate pause: a chance to look back at years of unfinished ideas, decide what still represented him, and introduce himself as a solo artist before continuing toward whatever came next.

That idea is built into the album’s title. V explained that he had been thinking about his eventual destination in life and in his career, as well as the route he would need to take to reach it. A layover, in that sense, is an intermediate stop—a moment to rest, reflect, establish new goals, and then continue the journey. He hoped listeners might use the album in a similar way: not as a promise of a particular emotional result, but as an invitation to pause and consider their own lives, goals, and need for rest.
Years of songs, revisions, and changing direction
V said he had been writing songs continuously for approximately three or four years before Layover was released. The difficulty was not a lack of material. It was that his musical tastes and ambitions kept changing—sometimes from year to year, and sometimes from month to month.

He wanted the project to show many different sides of what he could do. That ambition caused the album’s direction to keep shifting. Songs written earlier could sound different when he returned to them later. With time, he could hear sections that needed improvement, or recognize that a track no longer reflected where he was creatively.
This process helps explain why the album took longer than he expected. V also described feeling shy about making his first solo album. Releasing music without BTS meant presenting a version of himself that could not be absorbed into the group’s larger identity. Every decision carried the pressure of deciding how he wanted the public to meet him on his own.
Eventually, V made a practical artistic choice: rather than trying to include every musical direction he had explored, he would use the first album primarily as an introduction. Songs that moved in other directions could wait for future opportunities. Layover therefore functions less like a definitive statement of everything V might become and more like a carefully chosen first meeting with “Kim Taehyung” as a solo artist.
Why the title fits the album’s purpose
The word “layover” describes a position between destinations. It suggests movement without claiming that the traveler has arrived. That makes it an apt metaphor for V’s transition from being known principally as a BTS member to developing a separate solo identity.
It also captures the album’s emotional scale. V did not describe the record as a final destination or as a summary of his career. He presented it as a place to stop, rest, review the road behind him, and decide where to go next. The title turns a period of uncertainty and revision into part of the project’s meaning.

For listeners, the same metaphor becomes an invitation. V said he hoped people could listen while reflecting on their own lives and ambitions. That is his intended use for the album, not a guaranteed psychological or therapeutic effect. The record offers a space for contemplation; what a listener finds there will depend on the listener.
A sound shaped by comfort, jazz, and classical music
V identified jazz and classical music as favorite genres and said they were styles he grew up listening to. During free time or breaks from work, he returned to them because they gave him a sense of comfort. His goal was to create music that could offer a similar feeling of consolation to ARMY.
The album’s restrained character follows that intention. Rather than presenting a single maximalist showcase of vocal power or genre changes, Layover settles into a mood built from R&B, soul, pop, and understated performance. The official BIGHIT MUSIC release notice gives the individual songs distinct descriptions:

- “Rainy Days” opens the main sequence.
- “Blue” is described by BIGHIT MUSIC as an old-school R&B homage with a modern sound.
- “Love Me Again” emphasizes V’s low register within an R&B setting.
- “Slow Dancing”, the focus track, draws on 1970s romantic soul and a free, laid-back feeling.
- “For Us” serves as a pop-R&B epilogue.
The descriptions come from the label, but they also clarify the project’s overall direction: music intended to feel lived-in rather than hurried. V’s interest in older styles is not presented as a strict recreation of the past. Instead, those influences provide a comfortable musical language for a new stage of his career.
The influence of Pink Tape and Min Hee-jin
In an interview with W Korea, V said that he wanted to show a different side of his music and that collaboration helped him do so. He named f(x)’s Pink Tape as a major inspiration, then contacted Min Hee-jin, who participated in Layover’s creative direction and production.

That account is important because it shows V looking beyond his own existing habits when shaping the album. It does not mean that Layover is a remake of Pink Tape, or that the two albums are sonically identical. The available interview material supports describing Pink Tape as an inspiration and Min Hee-jin’s involvement as part of V’s effort to reach a different artistic presentation—not claiming direct replication.
Watching BTS’s solo projects from the sidelines
V was the final BTS member to release a solo album during the group’s period of individual projects, according to contemporary coverage. By the time his turn arrived, he had watched his bandmates take their own music to the stage one by one.

He said those performances made him feel proud and emotional, while also making him increasingly nervous about his own release. The other members’ work became a source of motivation: seeing their effort and passion encouraged him to work harder and to be especially careful and considerate with his songs.
That combination of admiration and pressure is more revealing than a simple story of competition. V’s comments emphasize the emotional experience of watching the members he had worked alongside establish individual identities. Their solo releases showed him what was possible, but they also made his own introduction feel more immediate and consequential.
How the six-track album is arranged
BIGHIT MUSIC’s official release notice describes Layover as a six-track solo album containing five principal songs and a bonus track. The label recommends listening to tracks one through five as a connected sequence:
Rank #4
- Supported by three singles `Buddy Holly', `Undone' and `Say It Ain't So' - this debut album brought Weezer mainstream success and eventually became certified triple-platinum in the United States
- “Rainy Days”
- “Blue”
- “Love Me Again”
- “Slow Dancing”
- “For Us”
- “Slow Dancing (Piano Ver.)”
The main sequence moves toward “Slow Dancing,” the focus track, before “For Us” provides the stated epilogue. The piano version then functions as a separate bonus treatment rather than part of the five-song progression. BIGHIT MUSIC also announced music videos for all five principal songs, reinforcing the idea that the project was meant to introduce several connected facets of V’s solo presentation.
The album was released on September 8, 2023, at 1 p.m. Korea Standard Time. Amazon Music’s listing independently confirms the six-song sequence and release date. It is best described here as a six-track solo album; although music databases commonly classify it as an EP, calling it a full-length LP without qualification would be misleading.
Physical editions and where to look for the album
The original official Weverse pre-order notice listed three physical CD versions and a separate Weverse Albums version. The standard package contents included an outbox, two photobooks, a lyric book, postcards, photocards, a CD-R, poster, checklist, and letter. The Weverse Albums version used a smaller package containing a photobook, lyric book, photocards, and a QR card.
Physical formats have continued to vary by retailer and edition. The official Weverse Shop has listed versioned physical editions, Weverse Albums versions, and vinyl, while Amazon’s music and merchandise pages have shown both Audio CD and vinyl listings. Inventory, sellers, prices, and regional availability can change, so shoppers should verify the live listing and edition details before purchasing. Readers looking for the standard physical release can search for “V Layover album CD”; collectors who prefer records can look for “V Layover vinyl”.
For fans specifically seeking official versioned packaging or a Weverse Albums edition, the official Weverse Shop is the most direct place to check, but a listing should be treated as current information rather than a permanent stock guarantee.

Layover as a beginning, not an endpoint
V’s description of Layover gives the album a clearer shape than the word “solo debut” alone. The record emerged from years of writing, changing preferences, self-editing, and uncertainty about which version of his musical identity should come first. Its final form reflects a decision to be selective rather than exhaustive.

That is why the album’s calm, reflective presentation matters. V drew on the jazz and classical music that comforted him, translated that feeling through R&B and soul-oriented songs, and worked with collaborators to present a side of himself that he felt BTS’s group music could not fully contain. At the same time, he left room for future projects to explore the ideas that did not belong on this first stop.
Layover is consequently both personal and provisional. It introduces V as a solo artist without pretending to define his entire future. Like the journey in its title, it pauses long enough to take stock—but it is still moving forward.

Why did V’s solo album take several years to develop?
