Spoilers: Connections #448 answers
The four completed groups are:
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| Cook in a pan | BROWN, CHAR, GRILL, SEAR |
| Parts of the ear | ANVIL, CANAL, DRUM, HAMMER |
| Shades of black | CHARCOAL, JET, RAVEN, SABLE |
| Where you might find “a driver” | GOLF BAG, LIMOUSINE, MOVIE SET, TOOLBOX |
Why these words belong together
Yellow: COOK IN A PAN — BROWN, CHAR, GRILL, SEAR
Brown means to cook food until its surface develops a browned color. To char is to burn or blacken the outside of food. To grill means to cook with direct heat, while to sear means to brown a surface quickly using high heat.
The category’s wording is deliberately broad: these are cooking terms associated with applying heat to food, even though grilling is more commonly associated with a grill or grate than with an ordinary frying pan.
Green: PARTS OF THE EAR — ANVIL, CANAL, DRUM, HAMMER
This is the group designed to make familiar workshop words misleading.

- Anvil: the incus, one of the small bones in the middle ear.
- Hammer: the malleus, another middle-ear bone.
- Canal: the ear canal, the passage leading inward from the outer ear.
- Drum: the eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane.
“Hammer” and “anvil” strongly suggest a toolbox, but their anatomical meanings place them with “canal” and “drum.”
Blue: SHADES OF BLACK — CHARCOAL, JET, RAVEN, SABLE
Charcoal and jet are common descriptions for very dark black colors. Raven and sable can also be used as evocative or commercial color names for deep black tones, drawing on the appearance of a raven’s feathers and sable fur.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The trap here is that “raven” is also a bird and “sable” is an animal or fur. In this group, both words function as color descriptors.
Purple: WHERE YOU MIGHT FIND “A DRIVER” — GOLF BAG, LIMOUSINE, MOVIE SET, TOOLBOX
The purple group is the most lateral because “driver” changes meaning from one entry to the next:
- Golf bag: a driver is a golf club carried in a golf bag.
- Limousine: a limousine may have a professional driver.
- Movie set: Adam Driver is an actor who may be associated with a movie set.
- Toolbox: a toolbox may contain a screwdriver or another type of driver tool.
This category does not ask for four synonyms. Instead, each answer provides a different place or context in which “a driver” might appear. That mixed structure is what makes it difficult to spot before the other groups are removed.
The biggest traps in this puzzle
HAMMER and ANVIL look like obvious tools, and TOOLBOX appears to reinforce that association. But “hammer” and “anvil” are also names for the middle-ear bones, leaving TOOLBOX for the purple driver group.
Best Value
CHAR can look like another black-color word, especially alongside CHARCOAL. Its intended use is as a cooking verb with BROWN, GRILL and SEAR.
JET, RAVEN and SABLE are not grouped as objects, animals or materials. Here they are all descriptors for extremely dark black shades, with CHARCOAL completing the set.
