Netflix downloads stay inside the Netflix app. They are not ordinary MP4 files, cannot normally be copied to a USB drive or another device, and may expire or disappear when licensing, account, or membership conditions change.
How to download a Netflix movie
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Netflix recommends Wi-Fi so the download does not consume a large amount of mobile data.
- Open the Netflix app and sign in. You must remain signed in to watch downloaded titles offline.
- Find a downloadable movie. Open the movie’s detail page and look for the Download icon. You can also browse Netflix’s list of titles available for download.
- Select Download. The movie will be saved inside the Netflix app on that device.
- Play it offline. Open Netflix, go to Downloads, choose the movie, and select Play.
If the Download icon does not appear for a particular movie, that title is not currently available for download. This is usually a licensing or title-availability restriction, not a fault with your phone or tablet.
Where Netflix downloads are stored
A Netflix download is stored in the app’s protected storage on the device used to download it. It is not saved as a normal video file in your Photos, Files, or Downloads folder.
As a result, you generally cannot:
- copy a Netflix movie to a USB drive;
- transfer it freely to another phone, tablet, or computer;
- play it in VLC or another media player;
- download it from Netflix.com in a web browser; or
- move it to a television or streaming stick as a standalone video file.
To watch offline on another supported device, install Netflix there, sign in, and download the title again if it is still available and your plan and device allow it.

Which devices support Netflix downloads?

Buying a Fire tablet for offline movies
An Amazon Fire tablet is one of the clearest hardware options for Netflix downloads because Fire tablets are an officially supported device category. However, do not assume that every model qualifies indefinitely. Verify that the model supports the required Fire OS version, can install the Netflix app from the Amazon Appstore, and has enough internal storage for the movies you plan to carry.
How to choose download quality

- High or Higher: uses more storage and takes longer to download. On supported titles and devices, it can play at up to 1080p.
The highest setting does not guarantee HD playback. The title, device, display, and Netflix’s current support rules all matter. If you are downloading several movies for travel, Standard quality is usually the better choice when storage or download time is limited.
Look for the download-quality control in the Netflix app under My Netflix, your profile name, and App Settings. The exact wording or location may vary by app version and device.
Can Netflix downloads use an SD card?
On compatible Android and Amazon Fire devices, Netflix allows future downloads to be stored on an installed SD card. The usual path is:

A microSD card for Fire tablet or compatible Android device can help when internal storage is limited, but external storage is not universally supported. If the Download Location option is missing, or downloads fail when the card is selected, the device or card may not be compatible. In that case, use internal storage or try a different compatible card.
Why a downloaded movie may disappear or stop playing
Netflix downloads are temporary offline licenses, not permanent ownership of a video file. A downloaded movie can become unavailable for several reasons:
- The download expired. Some titles can be watched offline only for a limited period.
- The title’s licensing changed. Netflix may remove a movie or withdraw its download rights.
- The title has a download-frequency limit. Some movies restrict how many times they can be downloaded within a year.
- Your membership was canceled. Netflix says downloads are deleted when the membership is canceled. If you restart the membership, you must download the titles again.
- The app needs an online check. Reconnect to the internet and open Netflix while signed in if the app asks you to refresh or verify the download.
- The app or its data was removed. Uninstalling Netflix or clearing its app data deletes downloaded titles and signs you out.
For that reason, download a movie shortly before a flight, road trip, or other period without reliable internet rather than assuming it will remain playable indefinitely.

Download limits by Netflix plan

These limits are separate from title-specific expiration and download-frequency restrictions. A movie may be downloadable in general but unavailable to you because of a plan limit, device limit, title rule, or storage shortage.
Smart Downloads and movies
Smart Downloads is mainly designed for television series. It can automatically download the next episode or download a selection of recommended titles, depending on the feature and device. Netflix says Smart Downloads is not available on an ad-supported plan.
You do not need Smart Downloads to download a single movie. For a movie, open its detail page and select the regular Download icon.
Troubleshooting Netflix downloads
The Download icon is missing
- Try another movie. If other titles show the icon, the original title is probably not licensed for download.
- Confirm that you are using the Netflix app rather than a browser.
- Check that the device is a supported category.
- Update Netflix and the device operating system.
- Check whether your plan has reached its download limit.
A missing icon on only one or two titles usually points to title availability. A missing icon across the entire app is more likely to involve device, app, account, or plan compatibility.
The download will not start or is stuck
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Check available internal storage.
- Use Standard quality if storage is low.
- Pause other downloads and close apps that may be consuming bandwidth.
- Update the Netflix app and operating system.
- Restart the device and try again.
If an SD card is selected, remove and reinsert it, confirm that it is recognized by the device, or try compatible internal storage instead.

The downloaded movie will not play offline
- Open Netflix while connected to the internet and signed in, then try the title again.
- Check the Downloads section for an expiration notice.
- Confirm that the Netflix membership is active.
- Make sure the title has not been removed from Netflix.
- Do not clear Netflix app data or uninstall the app unless you are prepared to download the movie again.
Netflix will not download on Android
Update Android and Netflix first. Netflix also warns that rooted devices, modified operating systems, and uncertified configurations can prevent the app or download feature from working even when the hardware appears capable of streaming.
Netflix will not download on a Fire tablet
Confirm that the tablet runs Fire OS 7 or later, install or update Netflix through the Amazon Appstore, and check free storage. If the tablet uses an SD card, test internal storage to determine whether the card is the cause.

Netflix will not download on a Chromebook
Verify that the Chromebook supports Android apps and that the Google Play Store is enabled. Install the Netflix Android app from Google Play rather than attempting to download through the browser. ChromeOS and device-management policies can also affect whether Android apps are available.

Netflix’s supported offline method is deliberately app-based. You should not expect to:
- download movies directly from Netflix.com in Chrome, Safari, Edge, or another browser;
- download Netflix movies to a Windows PC or Mac;
- save Netflix movies as MP4, MKV, or another ordinary file format;
- copy downloads to a television, game console, USB drive, or second device;
- keep a movie permanently after its Netflix rights expire; or
- continue using downloads after canceling a Netflix membership.
Use Netflix’s in-app Download feature rather than third-party downloaders or screen-recording tools. Those methods are outside Netflix’s supported offline workflow and can create account, security, quality, and copyright problems.
