Ashley St. Clair said on February 14, 2025, that she had given birth about five months earlier to a child fathered by Elon Musk. The initial announcement was a claim, not an independently established fact. The dispute later entered Manhattan court proceedings, and The Wall Street Journal reported that a paternity test showed a 99.9999% probability that Musk was the biological father. The custody question remained separate and unresolved in the available reporting.
Ashley St. Clair said on February 14, 2025, that she had given birth about five months earlier to a child fathered by Elon Musk. At the time, Musk had not publicly confirmed the claim, so initial coverage appropriately described it as an allegation. The dispute later moved into Manhattan court proceedings, and The Wall Street Journal reported in April 2025 that a paternity test showed a 99.9999% probability that Musk was the biological father.
The paternity finding did not, by itself, resolve custody or every legal question. Later reporting described an ongoing and publicly contested family-law dispute, including St. Clair’s request for legal recognition and sole custody and Musk’s reported intention to seek full custody. No final custody ruling is established by the reporting summarized here.

Because the announcement initially came from St. Clair and Musk had not confirmed it publicly, the careful description at that stage was that she claimed Musk was the child’s father. The “13th child” wording used in early coverage referred to Musk’s publicly known children at that time. It is more precise to call the child his 13th publicly known child at the time, rather than treating that number as a definitive count of all of Musk’s children.
How the story developed
- September 2024, approximately: Later reports placed the child’s birth in this month, consistent with St. Clair’s statement that she had welcomed the baby five months before her February announcement. The available material does not establish an exact date.
- February 14, 2025: St. Clair publicly said that Musk was the father of her child. Initial reports treated paternity as a claim because Musk had not publicly confirmed it.
- February 21–22, 2025: St. Clair filed a petition in Manhattan seeking legal recognition of Musk as the father and sole custody of the child. Reporting on the filing said she alleged that Musk had acknowledged paternity in private communications but had not signed an agreement requiring a test and formal recognition.
- April 2025: The Wall Street Journal reported that a paternity test produced a 99.9999% probability that Musk was the biological father. The Journal also reported on negotiations involving confidentiality and financial support. Those details should be understood as reported allegations and negotiations, not as independently reviewed public agreements.
- April 2025 and afterward: Later coverage referred to the child as Romulus and described the test result as confirming Musk’s biological relationship. The child’s legal name, birth-certificate status, and the complete legal consequences of the reported test should not be assumed without primary court or vital-record documents.
- January 2026: TMZ reported that Musk said he intended to seek full custody after a public conflict with St. Clair. That report indicates that the custody dispute remained contested in public coverage; it does not establish who ultimately prevailed or whether a final custody order was entered.
What the reported paternity test establishes—and what it does not
A reported probability of 99.9999% is very strong evidence of biological paternity. In ordinary reporting, it is reasonable to say that The Wall Street Journal reported the test as showing a 99.9999% probability that Musk was the biological father. It is not appropriate to present the result as though the public had reviewed the laboratory report itself when the available source is journalistic reporting.
Biological paternity and legal parentage are related but distinct questions. A test can address the biological relationship, while court proceedings may still determine legal recognition, custody, visitation, support, confidentiality, and other parental rights or obligations. The existence of a reported test result therefore does not tell readers what a court ultimately ordered.

Why the headline needs careful wording
The original headline describes St. Clair’s February 2025 announcement and the five-month timeframe she gave. Read without context, however, it can sound like an independently established fact that Musk had already acknowledged publicly. The more accurate current framing is that St. Clair claimed Musk fathered her son, that she then pursued paternity recognition and sole custody in court, and that later reporting described a highly conclusive paternity-test result.

That distinction matters because the story has several separate layers:
- St. Clair’s announcement: a public claim made on February 14, 2025.
- The court filing: a petition seeking recognition and sole custody, with allegations about private communications.
- The reported test result: a result described by The Wall Street Journal as showing a 99.9999% probability of biological paternity.
- The custody question: a separate legal issue whose final outcome is not established in the available material.
Bottom line
St. Clair said in February 2025 that she had welcomed Musk’s child about five months earlier. She sought legal recognition of paternity and sole custody in Manhattan, and later reporting described a paternity test showing a 99.9999% probability that Musk was the biological father. The reported test result addresses biological paternity, not the ultimate custody arrangement. Based on the available reporting, the final outcome of the custody dispute should remain described as unresolved or not independently established.
