United’s inflight entertainment is improving quickly, but it is not yet uniform across every aircraft. Newer and retrofitted planes increasingly offer seatback screens, Bluetooth audio, USB or electrical power, and better Wi-Fi; older aircraft and some United Express flights may rely more on personal devices.
United’s inflight entertainment is improving quickly, but it is not yet one uniform product across every aircraft. Newer and retrofitted planes increasingly offer seatback screens, Bluetooth audio, USB or electrical power, and better Wi-Fi. Older aircraft—and some United Express flights—may rely more heavily on your phone, tablet, or laptop.
The practical rule is simple: check the amenities for your specific flight, then prepare for both seatback and personal-device entertainment. Here are five things worth knowing before you board.
1. Seatback screens are increasingly common—but aircraft still determine what you get
United’s “signature interior” program is adding seatback entertainment screens throughout equipped aircraft. United reported in October 2025 that more than half of its narrowbody fleet had received the signature interior and seatback screens. Earlier company results said more than 300 new or retrofit aircraft had received the configuration, while broader corporate materials describe a program covering more than 530 new and retrofitted aircraft with seatback screens and Bluetooth connectivity.

Those numbers show the direction of United’s fleet, not a guarantee for every itinerary. The aircraft operating your flight, its individual cabin configuration, and whether the flight is operated by United or United Express all matter. A United-branded route can therefore offer a very different entertainment experience from another route on the same day.
For example, United’s published specifications for the 737 MAX 8 list a screen at every seat, Bluetooth connectivity, USB power, and more than 1,400 on-demand selections. That specification should not be treated as a system-wide promise for every United aircraft.
In practical terms:
- Newer or refurbished aircraft: more likely to have an individual seatback screen and modern connections.
- Older aircraft: may have fewer seatback features or depend more on personal-device entertainment.
- United Express: aircraft and cabin amenities can vary significantly by operating carrier and aircraft type.
Do not rely solely on United’s general entertainment branding. Look at the amenities shown for the actual flight before departure.
2. The free catalog goes well beyond a few looping movie channels
On aircraft equipped for seatback entertainment, United’s free catalog can include movies, television programs, international selections, audio playlists, podcasts, and games. The number of available titles is not fixed: United has cited more than 2,800 selections for certain newer 737 MAX and A321neo interiors, while a more recent 737 MAX 8 presentation lists more than 1,400 on-demand selections. Those figures are aircraft-, market-, and catalog-version-specific rather than a permanent count for the entire airline.
The important distinction is that equipped aircraft offer on-demand programming, not merely a small set of continuously repeating channels. You may be able to choose among films, episodes, audio, podcasts, and games directly from the seatback system.

Partner programming is expanding the catalog
United has also added named content collaborations. In 2025, the airline announced that Spotify content would add more than 450 hours of audio and video, including video podcasts and audiobooks. United also announced a collaboration with Apple TV that made selected hit series available free on more than 130,000 seatback screens. Its full-year 2025 results later described Apple TV programming and Spotify content across more than 150,000 seatback screens.
There is an important limitation: this does not mean a United passenger receives a complete Apple TV+ subscription or the entire Spotify catalog. The announcements describe selected programming made available through United’s inflight system. The exact lineup can change, so treat partner content as a useful bonus rather than a guarantee that a particular series or podcast will be available on your flight.
3. Bluetooth is convenient, but bring a headphone backup
Bluetooth is one of the most useful additions to United’s newer and retrofitted interiors. On compatible aircraft, passengers can pair their own Bluetooth headphones directly with the seatback entertainment system. United’s fleet announcements describe Bluetooth throughout the new 737 MAX and A321neo interiors, and the airline’s 737 MAX 8 materials specifically list Bluetooth at the seatback system.

Do not assume that every United or United Express seatback system supports Bluetooth, and do not assume that every flight will operate with the aircraft originally displayed when you booked.
If you are shopping for Bluetooth headphones for airplane travel, prioritize a model that can also work with a wired connection or keep a separate wired pair in your carry-on. That gives you a fallback if the aircraft changes, pairing fails, or the entertainment system does not support Bluetooth.
United’s published specifications for relevant aircraft also list USB ports and electrical power. Again, that is useful when present but not universal across the fleet. Charge your headphones and devices before boarding rather than assuming that the seat will provide a working outlet.

4. Personal devices still matter—and Starlink is not the same thing as the entertainment library
Phones, tablets, and laptops remain an important part of United’s entertainment strategy. On flights equipped for personal-device entertainment, the United app can provide access to movies and games while you are in the air. This matters when your aircraft has no individual screen, when you prefer your own display, or when the seatback system is unavailable.
It also helps to separate two services that are easy to confuse:

United’s app listing identifies Starlink-enabled inflight Wi-Fi as available on select flights and says MileagePlus members can use Starlink Wi-Fi free on equipped flights. United has described Starlink as supporting multiple connected devices, including phones, tablets, laptops, and seatback screens, with uses such as streaming, shopping, and gaming.
The rollout is ongoing rather than complete. United said in April 2026 that installations had been completed on 327 dual-class United Express aircraft and were expected fleet-wide by the end of 2027. In June 2026, the airline described continued expansion to widebody aircraft. Those rollout statements should not be read as proof that every United flight has Starlink today.

Even with fast Wi-Fi, streaming a personal service is not identical to watching United’s free catalog. You need your own account where required, the aircraft must have a suitable connection, and performance can vary with demand and the route. If a particular film or episode matters, download it for offline viewing before you leave home.

The most reliable preparation is to inspect your reservation and the United app for the flight-specific “in-flight amenities” or entertainment information. United’s app describes onboard movies and games and identifies Starlink Wi-Fi only on select flights. United’s guest Wi-Fi portal also directs passengers toward movies, television, and other entertainment available for their flight.
Aircraft swaps can occur, so even a promising listing is best treated as an indication rather than an absolute guarantee. A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common disappointment: boarding expecting a screen or fast internet and discovering that the aircraft offers neither.
United entertainment preflight checklist
- Check the specific flight’s amenities. Look for the aircraft type and the listed entertainment, power, and Wi-Fi features in your reservation or the United app.
- Update the United app while you still have reliable internet. It may be needed for personal-device entertainment and flight-specific information.
- Charge your phone, tablet, and headphones. Do not count on an outlet, USB port, or fully charged seatback system on an aircraft whose configuration is uncertain.
- Bring Bluetooth headphones plus a backup. Bluetooth works on equipped interiors, but a wired option protects against aircraft changes and compatibility problems.
- Download anything you definitely want to watch. Offline content is the safest option when you require a particular title or do not want to depend on Wi-Fi.
- Consider a USB-C power bank for travel if you will depend on a phone or tablet and the flight’s power availability is unclear. It is optional on aircraft with working seat power, and it must comply with applicable airline and battery-carry-on rules.
- Do not count on Starlink unless the flight indicates it. The rollout is substantial but not fleet-wide.
The bottom line
United is moving toward a much better inflight entertainment experience: more seatback screens, Bluetooth audio, USB and electrical power, a larger on-demand catalog, partner programming, and increasingly capable connectivity. But the airline has not eliminated aircraft-to-aircraft variation.
For the most predictable trip, verify the amenities for your exact flight, install or update the United app, bring compatible headphones with a backup option, charge your devices, and download personal entertainment before boarding. That preparation covers both sides of United’s current system: a growing seatback library and a personal-device experience that still depends on the aircraft.
