- YELLOW ___
- GREEN ___
- BLUE ___
- PURPLE ___
One useful way to approach this grid is to look for the most distinctive phrases first. Green Goblin, Yellow Pages, blue jay, and Purple Haze are especially recognizable. After identifying one answer for each color, test the remaining words against the same color rather than grouping them by their individual meanings.

Why this puzzle was tricky
The puzzle’s difficulty comes less from obscure vocabulary than from its repeated construction. Once you notice that a color can precede many of the words, several wrong combinations begin to sound plausible. For example, green jacket and blue beret are perfectly understandable phrases, but JACKET belongs in the yellow group and BERET belongs in the green group.
The best defense against these red herrings is to seek a complete set of four familiar compounds. A single phrase such as green Goblin is a strong foothold, but it is not enough by itself: the remaining words must also produce the cleanest four-word category. The same process works with Yellow Pages, blue jay, and Purple Haze.

Why puzzle #500 matters
This was the 500th standard NYT Connections puzzle. The milestone is reflected in the construction: instead of using four unrelated category ideas, the puzzle gives every group the same visible color-prefix framework. That creates a self-referential theme while still allowing the individual phrases to range across journalism, superheroes, animals, clothing, music, literature, and nature.
