The film turns that high-concept survival problem into a mystery about the barrier, the people confined by it, and a relationship already damaged by grief and avoidance.
Brick (2025) is a German mystery thriller now associated with Netflix, not Rian Johnson’s unrelated 2005 neo-noir of the same name. Directed and co-written by Philip Koch, the film traps a couple and their neighbors inside a Hamburg apartment building after a glossy, seemingly impenetrable black wall seals the exits and windows. The residents must investigate what has happened, decide whom to trust, and find a way out before the building’s confinement turns deadly.
Where to watch Brick (2025)
The verified broad release path for Brick is Netflix streaming. It premiered at Filmfest München on July 2, 2025, and received its worldwide Netflix release on July 10, 2025.
Netflix lists German as the original audio language and provides dubbed and subtitled options in relevant territories. The precise language menu, availability, and subscription requirements can vary by country and may change, so check the current Netflix listing in your region before watching. The film should not be described as a conventional U.S. theatrical release.

What is Brick about?
Tim and Olivia are already living through a serious relationship crisis when they discover that their apartment building has been enclosed by an unfamiliar black barrier. The wall covers the building’s exits and windows, creating an apparently sealed structure with no obvious way out.
They are not trapped alone. The building’s other residents are forced into the same survival situation, and cooperation quickly becomes difficult. Some neighbors want to investigate the barrier, others look for immediate escape routes, and suspicion grows as the group struggles to understand what has happened.
The film’s central mystery is larger than the practical question of how to break through the wall. The residents must also ask what the structure is, why it appeared, and whether the people inside can work together long enough to discover an answer. That makes Brick closer to a contained speculative mystery than to a straightforward monster movie.
A spoiler-safe look at the story
The story combines three pressures:
- A science-fiction mystery: The black barrier is unusual, apparently futuristic, and resistant to ordinary attempts at escape.
- A survival scenario: A group of neighbors must share information and limited options while enclosed in one building.
- A relationship drama: Tim and Olivia’s personal problems do not disappear simply because a larger emergency begins.
Netflix’s official material identifies a pregnancy loss and Tim’s consuming focus on completing a video game as important sources of damage between the couple. Their forced proximity therefore has an emotional as well as physical dimension: the wall prevents them from leaving at exactly the moment their relationship is already coming apart.

Brick is set in Hamburg, Germany, but it was filmed in Prague, Czech Republic, including at Barrandov Studio. These are different facts: Hamburg is the story’s fictional setting, while Prague supplied the production locations and studio facilities.
The apartment complex is more than a backdrop. Because the film keeps its characters inside one sealed building, the production design has to make corridors, apartments, windows, and communal spaces feel like parts of a changing pressure chamber. The contained setting also keeps attention on the residents’ shifting alliances rather than on a succession of large exterior action scenes.

What the wall represents
The barrier can be read as a literal expression of the distance between Tim and Olivia. They are physically prevented from leaving while they are emotionally unable to move past grief, avoidance, and poor communication. This interpretation is an analytical reading of the premise and relationship setup, not a quoted statement from the filmmakers.
The building also functions as a social experiment. Under normal conditions, neighbors can retreat into separate apartments or leave the property when conflict escalates. Here, the residents are forced to share the same emergency, and survival may depend on people they distrust. The result lets the film examine how quickly cooperation, suspicion, individualism, and group pressure emerge when ordinary institutions and escape routes disappear.

The high-concept premise creates a particular challenge: the mystery has to remain satisfying as the film explains more about the barrier. Some critical responses found the setup, visual design, and performances stronger than the screenplay’s later development. In particular, reviewers differed over whether the mystery’s eventual direction felt intriguing, muddled, or too obvious. That division is more useful than calling the film either a universal success or a complete failure.
Reception: an appealing premise with divided execution
Critical and audience response to Brick has been mixed. Review aggregators captured a substantially more favorable response to the film’s concept and production design than to its overall character writing and mystery construction. Critic complaints included one-dimensional characters, repetition, and a story that can become confusing while still feeling predictable. Other assessments regarded it as watchable, accessible, and effective enough as a contained thriller.
The fairest summary is that Brick offers a strong elevator pitch, an enclosed visual world, and committed performances, while its execution may not fully match the possibilities of the premise. Aggregate critic and user scores are moving snapshots rather than permanent facts, so readers should check the current Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, or IMDb pages if numerical ratings matter to their decision.

Who should watch Brick?
The film is a reasonable choice for viewers who enjoy contained German thrillers, survival mysteries, speculative premises, and stories that use a physical crisis to expose relationship problems. It may appeal particularly to audiences who prefer a small cast, a single oppressive location, and a central question that unfolds through investigation rather than conventional action.
Viewers seeking a tightly explained mystery, deeply developed residents, or a large-scale science-fiction adventure may find the film less satisfying. Its strongest asset is the situation: a couple in crisis, a building with no visible exit, and a barrier whose purpose must be uncovered. Whether that hook is enough will depend on how much patience a viewer has for a mystery whose explanation and character work have divided critics.
