Full spoilers: Lee Harker survives Longlegs, but the case ends with her killing her own mother, Ruth, after discovering that Ruth has been the killer’s accomplice. Lee saves Ruby from an immediate murder, yet she cannot destroy Ruby’s doll. The final image therefore offers survival without a clean victory.

Spoilers for all of Longlegs (2024) follow.

Lee Harker survives the ending of Longlegs, but she does not escape the film’s evil unscathed. She discovers that her mother, Ruth Harker, has been Longlegs’s accomplice for decades. Ruth helped deliver the supernatural dolls that caused the murders, and she made a bargain with Longlegs to spare Lee when Lee was a child. In the final confrontation, Lee kills both FBI Agent Carter and her own mother to stop Ruby Carter from becoming another victim.

Lee then tries to shoot Ruby’s doll. Her gun clicks empty. The doll survives, leaving Ruby’s fate—and the larger supernatural threat—unresolved.

Who was Longlegs really working with?

The apparent serial-killer mystery eventually becomes something more complicated than the story of one murderer. Longlegs’s human identity is Dale Ferdinand Cobble, but he is portrayed as a servant or instrument of the Devil rather than necessarily being Satan himself. His repeated “Hail Satan!” declarations establish his allegiance, not that he is literally the ultimate supernatural entity.

Longlegs created lifelike dolls modeled after the girls in selected families. Each doll contained a supernatural object or presence connected to the force he served. Once a doll entered a home, it exerted an influence over the family—especially the father. The father would kill his wife and daughter before killing himself, creating the pattern the FBI had been investigating.

Longlegs did not deliver every doll personally. Ruth disguised herself as a nun and presented the gifts as if they came from the church. Her role explains how the dolls reached the families and why the investigation initially failed to connect the crimes to her.

Why did Ruth spare Lee?

Lee was supposed to be one of Longlegs’s victims. He visited the Harker home on Lee’s ninth birthday, the same kind of birthday that becomes significant in the murders. Ruth understood that Longlegs and the Devil intended to destroy her daughter.

Instead of allowing Lee to die, Ruth made a bargain. She agreed to help Longlegs by using the Harker basement as his workshop and by delivering the dolls to other families. In return, Lee would be spared from the immediate attack.

That bargain is the central moral horror of the film. Ruth’s motivation is recognizably protective: she believes she is doing whatever is necessary to keep her daughter alive. But the protection is inseparable from mass murder. Ruth saves Lee from one crime while helping create many others.

Ruth also hides Lee’s memories of the childhood encounter and keeps the doll made for her. The doll functions as a psychic link and helps explain Lee’s unusual intuitive abilities. By controlling what Lee remembers, Ruth keeps her daughter alive but prevents her from understanding the source of her trauma or her connection to the case.

Why does Longlegs kill himself?

Lee eventually connects the dates, families, and clues and helps the FBI capture Longlegs. His arrest appears to be the procedural conclusion: the serial killer has been found and the investigation is over.

It is not the real resolution. During interrogation, Longlegs identifies himself as Dale Cobble and directs Lee toward her mother. He then repeatedly smashes his face into the interrogation table, killing himself.

The apparent anticlimax is deliberate. Removing Longlegs physically does not remove the machinery of his crimes. The dolls remain, Ruth remains involved, and the supernatural influence continues. Longlegs is less important as an individual killer than as the human agent through whom a larger evil operates.

What does Ruth’s confession reveal?

When Lee returns to Ruth’s home, she finds evidence that her mother has preserved information and objects connected to Lee’s past. Ruth finally admits that she worked with Longlegs and delivered the dolls to the targeted families while disguised as a nun.

Ruth’s explanation does not turn her into an innocent victim. She believes that cooperation is the only way to protect Lee from the Devil, but she has spent decades knowingly exposing other children and parents to the same danger. Her love for Lee and her responsibility for the murders are both true at the same time.

This is why the final conflict is not simply Lee versus Longlegs. The person who saved Lee is also the person who helped reproduce the violence that shaped her life. Ruth’s protective lie becomes another form of harm: it conceals the truth, isolates Lee from her own memories, and makes the eventual discovery devastating.

Why does Ruth destroy Lee’s doll?

Ruth shoots the doll that was made for Lee. Lee collapses, and the destruction breaks—or at least interrupts—the influence that has been obscuring her childhood memories. Afterward, Lee can remember Longlegs visiting the Harker home when she was nine and can understand why she survived while the other girls did not.

The film strongly establishes that the dolls are supernatural instruments, but it does not provide a complete set of rules for them. It never precisely explains how the objects transmit their influence, why the fathers respond in the particular way they do, or what exact relationship exists between the dolls and Satan. The uncertainty is part of the horror. The danger begins when the doll is accepted into the home, before the family fully understands what it has allowed inside.

What happens at Agent Carter’s house?

Lee realizes that Ruth has chosen the family of her FBI supervisor, Agent Carter, as the next target. The timing again involves a ninth birthday, and Ruth has already delivered a doll intended for Carter’s daughter, Ruby.

When Lee reaches the house, the family is already under the doll’s influence. Carter kills his wife and prepares to kill Ruby. Lee shoots Carter before he can kill his daughter, stopping the immediate attack.

Ruth insists that the bargain must be completed and that the entire Carter family—including Ruby—has to die. Lee refuses to let the pattern continue. She shoots Ruth in the head, killing her mother.

That is the literal answer to what happens to Lee Harker: she survives, but only after killing the two adults who are most directly responsible for the final massacre—her supervisor, who has been forced into the violence, and her mother, who knowingly arranged it.

What happens to Ruby and her doll?

Ruby survives the immediate confrontation. However, Lee does not destroy the doll made for her. In the final image, Lee aims at it and pulls the trigger, but the gun is empty. The doll remains intact.

Ruby’s survival therefore is not a complete rescue. The film does not show whether Ruby has been permanently freed from the doll’s influence, whether the object can affect her later, or whether someone can safely remove its power. The final shot intentionally leaves the threat active.

The surviving doll is also the clearest evidence that Lee has not defeated the evil behind the murders. She has interrupted one killing and destroyed her own connection to the machinery, but she has not eliminated the mechanism itself.

Rank #4

Is Lee possessed or becoming the next Longlegs?

The ending makes that possibility available, but it does not confirm it.

One reading is that Lee remains connected to the supernatural cycle. Her psychic sensitivity, recovered memories, violent final choices, and inability to destroy Ruby’s doll all suggest that the evil has left her compromised. The image of Lee standing over the doll can also invite the idea that she might become a successor to Longlegs.

But the film never shows Lee accepting Longlegs’s identity or continuing his murders. Destroying her own doll appears to sever at least part of the connection that controlled or obscured her. The ending is better understood as deliberately open than as a confirmed transformation.

The safest conclusion is that Lee is not explicitly becoming the next Longlegs. She survives with the truth, trauma, guilt, and an unresolved supernatural threat. Whether she can protect Ruby—or whether Ruby’s doll begins another cycle—is left unanswered.

What does “Hail Satan!” mean?

Longlegs’s phrase shows that he believes he is serving a demonic power. It reinforces the film’s religious and supernatural framework, but it does not establish that Longlegs is Satan.

A more precise interpretation is that Dale Cobble is a human being whose life has been overtaken or hijacked by the Devil. That distinction matters because the film’s evil is not defeated simply by arresting or killing the man acting as its representative. Longlegs can die while his influence remains active through the dolls, Ruth’s actions, and the damage done to the surviving families.

Why the ending is tragic rather than triumphant

Lee technically wins the immediate confrontation: Carter is stopped, Ruth is dead, and Ruby is alive. But almost every personal cost has already been paid. Lee loses her mother, discovers that her childhood survival depended on a murderous bargain, and learns that the person who protected her was also responsible for exposing other families to the same horror.

The film’s central idea is that protective stories can become a form of inherited damage. Ruth tries to construct a shield around Lee by controlling her memories and hiding the truth. That shield works in the narrowest possible sense—it keeps Lee alive—but it does not make her safe. It turns secrecy into complicity and forces Lee to confront the truth only after the violence has spread outward.

Osgood Perkins has described the ending as intentionally devastating. The Devil’s victory is not necessarily a spectacular apocalypse or the conquest of the entire world. It is the smaller, more intimate destruction of a family: getting Lee to kill her own mother, while leaving behind enough uncertainty for the cycle to continue.
