Hints for Connections #426
Yellow-group hint
Think of four familiar things commonly associated with the same color. One is a planet, one is a fruit, one is a flower, and one is a mythological figure.
Green-group hint
These four words can all describe something that is functioning or currently in operation.
Blue-group hint
Four of the words are names of Microsoft products or product families. Some also have ordinary meanings, which makes them useful decoys.
Purple-group hint
The final four are titles of biographical films. Read them as movie names rather than as everyday vocabulary.
Connections #426 answers for August 10, 2024
| Color | Category | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Things that are red | DEVIL, MARS, ROSE, STRAWBERRY |
| Green | Be in commission | FUNCTION, OPERATE, RUN, WORK |
| Blue | Microsoft products | EDGE, OFFICE, TEAMS, WINDOWS |
| Purple | Biopics | BLONDE, JOBS, MILK, VICE |
Yellow: Things That Are Red
DEVIL, MARS, ROSE, STRAWBERRY
These words can all be associated with red. The Devil is conventionally depicted in red, Mars is the Red Planet, and roses and strawberries are familiar red-colored objects.
This group is relatively approachable, although DEVIL and MARS can initially suggest mythology, religion, or outer space instead of a color category. In Connections, that kind of shift in interpretation is often the point.
Rank #3
Green: Be in commission
FUNCTION, OPERATE, RUN, WORK
To be “in commission” is to be functioning or operational. Each of these four words can describe something that is working or in service: a machine can function, operate, run, or work.
RUN and WORK are especially broad words. They can refer to exercise, employment, tasks, or machines, so they may not look like a neat group until the phrase “be in commission” supplies the intended meaning.
Blue: Microsoft products
EDGE, OFFICE, TEAMS, WINDOWS
These are Microsoft products or product families:
- Edge is Microsoft’s web browser.
- Office is Microsoft’s productivity software suite and brand.
- Teams is Microsoft’s collaboration and communication platform.
- Windows is Microsoft’s operating-system family.
This is likely the best starting point on the board because the four names form a recognizable technology cluster. The puzzle makes the group less immediate by using words that also have ordinary meanings: an edge is a boundary, an office is a workplace, teams are groups, and windows are features of a building.
Rank #4
Purple: Biopics
BLONDE, JOBS, MILK, VICE
These are titles of biographical films:
- Blonde is a film about Marilyn Monroe.
- Jobs dramatizes the life and career of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
- Milk tells the story of politician and gay-rights activist Harvey Milk.
- Vice focuses on former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney.
This is the trickiest category because the words do not share an obvious everyday meaning. The solve requires recognizing them as movie titles, rather than interpreting BLONDE, JOBS, MILK, and VICE literally.
How to approach this board
- Find the branded cluster: EDGE, OFFICE, TEAMS, and WINDOWS are the clearest four-way connection.
- Test the operational verbs: FUNCTION, OPERATE, RUN, and WORK all fit the idea of being in commission.
- Reconsider the remaining words: DEVIL, MARS, ROSE, and STRAWBERRY can all be red.
- Use elimination and switch reference frames: the last four words are film titles, producing the biopics category.
The main traps are the flexible meanings of RUN, WORK, and OFFICE, along with the purple group’s reliance on entertainment knowledge. If a word seems to fit several possible groups, look for the set that leaves exactly four strong answers without creating a duplicate category.

Connections presents 16 words. The goal is to divide them into four groups of four, with every group sharing a common theme. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple.

The color ranking is a guide rather than a guarantee. A familiar brand set may be easier for one player than a supposedly simpler word association, while a purple category such as film titles may be difficult if the relevant movies are not immediately recognizable. The board is also designed to include plausible overlaps, so identifying a possible connection is not enough—you must determine whether it is the intended four-word group.
