Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes, you can read a substantial amount of manga online for free in 2024—but usually not every chapter of every series. The most reliable choices are official services such as MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA, VIZ Shonen Jump, K MANGA, Manga UP!, Comikey, Azuki, and licensed library apps such as Hoopla and Libby. Depending on the platform, free access may mean selected chapters, a one-time first read, advertisements, daily points, a rotating promotion, or a library loan.
This guide separates those models so you do not mistake a free preview for an entire free catalog. Catalogs, prices, chapter limits, apps, and territory rules change, so treat the list as a guide to legitimate 2024 destinations rather than a permanent promise that every title will remain free.
What free manga access actually means
Before choosing a site, check which of these labels applies:
- Fully free for selected content: Chapters or series are available without payment, but the selection is limited.
- First-read free: You may read an eligible chapter once at no charge. Rereading it can require a subscription, points, or another payment.
- Free with ads: Advertisements unlock a limited number of chapters or reading sessions.
- Free daily tickets or points: The service replenishes reading currency on a schedule, sometimes supplemented by promotions.
- Free preview: The opening chapter, latest chapter, or a temporary promotional selection is free; the rest is paid.
- Free library loan: A participating library pays for or licenses the digital copy, while the reader borrows it with a valid library card.
- Mostly paid: The site is legitimate and may offer free samples, but it should not be described as a free manga library.
The list below includes all seven categories because they are more useful—and more honest—than claiming that 20 services provide unlimited manga for nothing.

Availability, pricing, chapter counts, and free-access rules were dynamic in 2024. Check the service’s own title page before registering or assuming that a chapter is included.
The 10 strongest options, explained
1. MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA: best for current Shueisha releases
MANGA Plus is Shueisha’s official digital manga service. It is the clearest first stop for readers who want current series from Weekly Shonen Jump and other Shueisha magazines, including simultaneous English releases for eligible titles. Shueisha describes the service as official and free.
The important qualification is how the app’s First Read Free model works. For many ongoing series, an eligible chapter can be read once at no charge. Reading it again may require subscription access, and some titles or chapters are excluded. The website and app can also differ in their available features.
- Choose it if: you want the latest Shueisha chapters as close to their Japanese release as possible.
- Expect: title exceptions, territory exclusions, and restrictions on rereading.
- Best practice: use the series page to check whether a chapter is marked free before assuming the entire back catalog is open.
2. VIZ Shonen Jump: best for Jump series and a large archive
VIZ Shonen Jump combines current Shonen Jump chapters with a substantial back catalog. VIZ labels selected chapters FREE, while access to other chapters is generally tied to membership. VIZ also connects digital series pages with volume purchases, making it straightforward to continue offline when a free chapter boundary ends.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is not an unlimited free archive. A reader may be able to sample the beginning of a series or read selected current chapters without paying, then encounter a membership request for older or additional chapters. VIZ’s rights and catalog differ by territory, so readers outside the service’s supported markets should check their local version rather than rely on a U.S.-focused recommendation.
3. K MANGA: best for Kodansha titles
K MANGA is Kodansha’s authorized digital distribution service. It is a strong choice for readers following Kodansha series and official simulpub releases. The service advertises free latest chapters, but access beyond the free material may use points, tickets, or another paid mechanism depending on the title and chapter.
Do not interpret a free latest chapter as permission to read the entire series for free. K MANGA’s model is designed to combine free promotional or current access with paid continuation. The available catalog and rules may also differ by territory.
4. Manga UP!: best for Square Enix manga
Manga UP! is Square Enix’s official digital manga service. Its free system uses daily Points and promotional Free Coins, which readers spend on eligible chapters. This can provide a steady way to read without paying, particularly if you are willing to follow the service’s release schedule and promotions.
Rank #2
- Viz Media
- Comes with secure packaging
- It can be used as a gift
The limitation is that the free allowance is item-based. You may not be able to open every chapter immediately, and free currency does not necessarily apply to every title or chapter. It is best understood as free daily reading, not an unlimited Square Enix library.
5. Comikey: best for ad-supported reading
Comikey focuses on officially licensed manga, manhua, manhwa, and webtoons. Its free model is particularly useful for readers who do not mind watching advertisements to unlock daily reading. The service also carries licensed simulpub chapters.
Because the free allowance is connected to advertisements, daily limits, and individual licensing arrangements, the experience can vary considerably between titles. Check the title page for the number of free chapters or daily unlocks available in your region.
6. Azuki: best for sampling a mixed publisher catalog
Azuki offers licensed manga from Kodansha USA and independent publishers. It has documented free opening chapters and has also used free chapter passes, making it useful for deciding whether a series is worth reading before subscribing.
Azuki should not be marketed as a free replacement for its full subscription catalog. Free access is primarily a discovery tool: read the opening material, then decide whether to subscribe or use another legal source for the remainder.
7. Hoopla: best use of a participating U.S. library card
Hoopla lets eligible library members borrow digital material at no direct cost, including manga from publishers such as Kodansha, Dark Horse, and TOKYOPOP. Its catalog examples have included series such as Berserk and Attack on Titan, although the exact selection depends on the library.
Start by signing in with your library card and searching the title—not by assuming that Hoopla’s national catalog is available to every member. Libraries can impose monthly borrowing limits, and two nearby libraries may offer very different manga collections. If your library participates, Hoopla can be one of the best ways to read complete digital volumes legally for a limited loan period.
8. Libby: best library alternative for manga ebooks
Libby provides free digital borrowing when you have a valid card from a participating library. Its help materials identify Media Do books as primarily manga, comics, and Japanese books, so searching Libby can uncover titles that are not prominent on commercial manga platforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRank #3
Libby is not a universal manga site: your library selects the collection and controls the number of available copies or simultaneous loans. A title may be listed but unavailable immediately because all digital copies are borrowed. Adding a library card from another library you are legitimately eligible to use can expand the selection, but do not pretend to qualify for cards or bypass local rules.
9. MangaPlaza: best for broad genre sampling
MangaPlaza is a licensed Japanese-manga platform with a particularly useful range for romance, fantasy, BL, and other genre readers. A free registration can open the first chapter of many titles, and the service periodically promotes Read for Free or limited free-chapter campaigns.
Its free material is best for discovery. Later chapters may require points or Premium access, and promotional availability changes. The platform’s Now Free destination is worth checking when you want to see which titles or chapters are temporarily available without charge.
10. INKR Comics: best for mixed-language-format catalogs
INKR Comics carries a mixture of manga, manhua, manhwa, and other comics. Official title pages show that some series provide a free opening chapter, while others offer multiple free chapters. That makes INKR useful when you are exploring several formats rather than looking only for Japanese manga.
Free access is title-specific. Read the individual series page for its exact free-chapter count and any lock, subscription, or coin requirement. A free chapter on one series does not establish the same rule for the whole platform.
10 more legitimate destinations worth checking
11. VIZ Manga
VIZ Manga is separate from VIZ Shonen Jump. It covers material from Shogakukan and Shojo Beat as well as other VIZ offerings. You may find free samples or selected current chapters, but the deeper catalog is primarily subscription-based. Choose it for its licensed selection and sampling tools, not because every volume is free.
12. Crunchyroll Manga
Crunchyroll Manga is a legitimate premium manga service associated with publishers including VIZ Media, Yen Press, Square Enix, AlphaPolis, and COMPASS. In the 2024 context, its launch and availability were centered on the United States and Canada. It belongs on a broad list because it may offer samples or an alternative for readers already using the service, but it is not a free catalog. Treat any free trial, sample, or bundled access as temporary or limited rather than permanent free reading.
13. BookWalker Global
BookWalker Global is primarily a legitimate digital retailer. It periodically offers free previews, free volumes, or publisher campaigns, so it is a useful place to check when a series is being promoted. Most of the catalog is paid, and a promotional free volume does not mean later volumes will also be free.

14. WEBTOON
WEBTOON is relevant if you use manga in the broader sense of digital comics. It provides free serialized episodes and may offer optional paid early access. Its strongest fit is Korean and international webcomics rather than a dedicated Japanese-manga catalog, so use it for manga-adjacent reading rather than as a substitute for MANGA Plus or a publisher-specific service.
15. Tapas
Tapas offers free serialized comics, including manhwa-style and independent work. Like WEBTOON, it is a webcomic platform rather than a Japanese-manga specialist. Some episodes can be free while earlier access, premium episodes, or other reading options require payment or waiting.
16. GlobalComix
GlobalComix is a broad digital-comics platform that can include manga-style or translated material and free issues. Search for a specific title and inspect its access label before assuming it is free. Its general comics focus means it is less precise for Japanese manga than the publisher-operated services above.
17. Renta!
Renta! is a legitimate manga and comics retailer that periodically provides free previews or promotional chapters. It is mainly a paid rental and purchase service, so its value here is sampling: use the free material to decide whether to rent or buy, rather than expecting a free full-series catalog.
18. Your public-library catalog
Do not search only inside commercial manga apps. Open your public library’s own ebook catalog and search for the title, author, or publisher. The catalog may route you to Libby, Hoopla, or Media Do, and it may reveal digital volumes that are invisible on another library platform.
This route is free to the reader when the library provides the loan, but it requires a valid local or participating-library card. Borrowing periods, waitlists, simultaneous-copy limits, and available volumes are all controlled by the library.
19. Individual publisher reader pages
Some publishers provide their own reader pages for first chapters, latest chapters, or short promotional windows. These pages are often the most authoritative place to confirm whether a chapter is licensed and whether a free offer is genuine. They are not a universal manga database: search for the publisher of the specific series and expect rules to differ from one title to another.
20. MangaPlaza’s Now Free section
MangaPlaza’s Now Free section is technically a discovery destination within MangaPlaza rather than a separate service. It earns a place in this list because rotating free promotions are easy to miss if you visit only a series page. Use it to find currently free chapters, then check the promotion’s end date and the access rules for later chapters.

How to find a specific series without wasting time
- Identify the rights holder. For Shueisha titles, begin with MANGA Plus or VIZ Shonen Jump. For Kodansha titles, check K MANGA. For Square Enix titles, check Manga UP!. If you are unsure, look at the publisher information on the official series page.
- Search the exact title on two kinds of service. Check the publisher platform first, then search Hoopla, Libby, and your library catalog for complete borrowed volumes.
- Read the access label. Look for FREE, First Read Free, free chapter, ad unlock, Points, Free Coins, ticket, borrow, or preview. These labels describe different restrictions.
- Check your country before making an account. A title can be licensed in one territory but absent in another. This is especially important for VIZ, K MANGA, Crunchyroll Manga, and library services.
- Confirm whether rereading is allowed. A one-time free read is different from unlimited free access. If you want to revisit a chapter, a paid plan or a borrowed volume may be necessary.
- Use only the official app or domain. Avoid downloads that promise unlocked chapters, premium coins, or a complete scan archive.
What to do when the free chapters end
Stopping at a free preview is normal; it is how many licensed platforms let readers sample a series. If you want to continue reading legally, compare the platform’s subscription, points, rental, library-loan, and physical-volume options rather than jumping to an unauthorized mirror. The cheapest route may be a library loan, while a subscription can make sense for someone reading several series and a physical copy may suit someone who wants offline reading or a collection.
Buying licensed manga books is optional, not a requirement for using the free services above. It can be a practical way to continue a series offline after a preview ends, and it gives you permanent access to the purchased volume instead of a temporary chapter unlock or loan. Check the official publisher or retailer listing to make sure you are buying the correct language and edition.
Why official and library services are safer
Official platforms distribute manga under publisher or creator agreements, while Hoopla, Libby, and related library routes provide access through licensed borrowing arrangements. That does not guarantee that every title will be available or that every chapter will be free, but it does provide a more dependable answer to the question of whether the reading source is authorized.
Unauthorized scanlation indexes and mirror sites should not be presented as legitimate alternatives. In addition to copyright concerns, they can use aggressive advertising, deceptive download buttons, unstable domains, pop-ups, or files that put a device and account at risk. A page promising every chapter of every manga for free is usually a warning sign, not evidence of a better catalog.
Recommended Free Tools
Checklist before you register
- Is the service official, publisher-operated, or connected to a participating library?
- Is the specific title licensed in your country?
- Does free mean the whole volume, selected chapters, one first read, an ad unlock, daily points, or a temporary promotion?
- Will you need an account, library card, subscription, points, tickets, or coins?
- Can you reread chapters you opened for free?
- Does the app or website support your device and preferred reading direction?
- If the free access ends, is there a clear legal route to borrow, subscribe, rent, buy, or read the next volume?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I read complete manga series online for free?
Sometimes through a participating library loan or a platform promotion, but most official services provide only selected chapters, latest chapters, one-time reads, daily points, ad unlocks, or previews for free. A complete free catalog is not the normal model.
Is MANGA Plus completely free?
MANGA Plus is an official free service for eligible content, but its First Read Free app model applies only to many eligible ongoing chapters. Title exceptions, territory restrictions, and rereading rules apply.
Which option is best if I have a library card?
Check Hoopla, Libby, and your library’s own catalog. Hoopla and Libby have different collections and lending limits, so searching both is worthwhile. You need a valid card from a participating library.
Are free manga websites legal?
Official publisher platforms, licensed services, authorized retailers, and library borrowing platforms are legitimate routes. A site offering unauthorized scans or unlocked premium chapters is not made legitimate simply because it is free.
Why can I read one chapter for free but not the next?
Platforms use different business models: a free sample, latest-chapter promotion, daily ticket, ad unlock, first-read rule, or rotating campaign. The service’s title page should state which chapters and conditions apply.
The Bottom Line
For the best legitimate free starting points, use MANGA Plus for current Shueisha releases, VIZ Shonen Jump for Jump samples and archive access, K MANGA for Kodansha, Manga UP! for Square Enix, Comikey for ad-supported reading, and Hoopla or Libby for library borrowing. Always verify the title, territory, and meaning of free before you start.
