NYT Connections #329 was published on Sunday, May 5, 2024. Use the progressive hints below to try the puzzle first, then reveal the four categories and all 16 answers. The biggest traps are the figurative use of FRUIT and the monster-name beginnings in the purple group.

NYT Connections #329 was the puzzle for Sunday, May 5, 2024. Its four groups were something gained from hard work, kinds of bagels, ways to contribute to a movie, and starts of monsters.

Try the hints below before opening the spoiler sections. The final answers are included farther down.

Hints for Connections #329

Here is one broad hint for each group:

  • Yellow: Something that can result from sustained effort or labor.
  • Green: Varieties of a familiar breakfast food.
  • Blue: Ways to participate in making a movie.
  • Purple: Word beginnings that can become names of monsters.

The green and purple groups are the easiest to misread. The food group is about kinds of bagels, not every food-related word on the board. The purple group contains only the beginnings of monster names rather than complete names.

Spoiler warning: the Connections #329 answers

The four completed groups were:

Color Category Words
Yellow Something gained from hard work BENEFIT, FRUIT, RETURN, REWARD
Green Kinds of bagels EGG, EVERYTHING, PLAIN, POPPY
Blue Contribute to a movie ACT, DIRECT, PRODUCE, WRITE
Purple Starts of monsters FRANK, MUM, VAMP, WERE

Yellow: SOMETHING GAINED FROM HARD WORK

BENEFIT · FRUIT · RETURN · REWARD

These words can all describe a result, payoff, or advantage obtained through effort. A person may receive a benefit or reward, earn a return on an investment, or enjoy the figurative fruit of their labor.

FRUIT is the potential trap here. It may initially look like it belongs with the food answers, but “the fruits of one’s labor” places it with the other words describing a payoff from work.

Green: KINDS OF BAGELS

EGG · EVERYTHING · PLAIN · POPPY

Each word can precede or describe bagel: egg bagel, everything bagel, plain bagel, and poppy or poppy-seed bagel.

The category is narrower than “foods” or “breakfast items.” That distinction matters because Connections often includes a word that can fit a broad theme while belonging to a more specific group.

Blue: CONTRIBUTE TO A MOVIE

ACT · DIRECT · PRODUCE · WRITE

Each word describes a way someone can contribute to a film. An actor can act in it; a director can direct it; a producer can produce it; and a screenwriter can write it.

The words are all verbs, but the connection is not simply “things done in entertainment.” They identify distinct creative or production roles involved in making a movie.

Purple: STARTS OF MONSTERS

FRANK · MUM · VAMP · WERE

Complete each beginning with the rest of a familiar monster name:

  • FRANK + enstein = Frankenstein
  • MUM + my = mummy
  • VAMP + ire = vampire
  • WERE + wolf = werewolf

This is a word-completion category. The entries are not intended to be complete monster names on their own, which makes the group especially difficult until the shared pattern appears.

Why this puzzle is deceptive

Connections requires a complete partition: all 16 entries must be divided into four groups of four. Spotting four words that seem related is not enough, because one word may have a plausible relationship with more than one theme.

In this puzzle, FRUIT can look like it belongs with the bagel varieties because it is a food-related word. The figurative phrase “fruits of one’s labor” points instead to the yellow group. The purple answers are another major obstacle: FRANK, MUM, VAMP, and WERE become clear only when you recognize that the category asks for starts of longer words.

A note about the word list

Some listings associated with this puzzle use a conflicting 16-word set—TORPEDO, BAT, COAST, LEVEL, CAPE, BATON, PLATEAU, HOAGIE, SETTLE, CRUISE, CIGAR, CASTLE, FLOAT, FLATTEN, FANG, and DRIFT. That list does not match the four answer groups above: none of those entries can be partitioned into BENEFIT, FRUIT, RETURN, REWARD; EGG, EVERYTHING, PLAIN, POPPY; ACT, DIRECT, PRODUCE, WRITE; and FRANK, MUM, VAMP, WERE.

For the Sunday, May 5, 2024 puzzle identified as Connections #329, the answer set is the one shown in the spoiler table. The conflicting list should not be treated as the grid for this puzzle.
