Professional reviewers largely saw a lavish but tightly controlled portrait that reveals little. Audience ratings and an A CinemaScore indicate that many ticket buyers appreciated its polish, fashion, ceremony, and sympathetic access.
Melania has produced one of the widest critic-audience divides on Rotten Tomatoes. The documentary currently carries a 10% Tomatometer from 62 critics, while its Popcornmeter sits at 99% from more than 2,500 verified audience ratings. Those figures are a snapshot, not permanent grades: Rotten Tomatoes totals can change as additional reviews and ratings arrive.
The contrast is striking, but it is not necessarily mysterious. Professional reviewers largely judged the film as an expensive, highly controlled portrait that promises unusual access to Melania Trump yet reveals little beyond a polished public image. Many audience members, by contrast, appear to have valued its elegance, fashion, access, and sympathetic presentation. The result is a documentary that critics overwhelmingly rejected while its public-facing ratings remain exceptionally positive.
What is Melania about?
Directed by Brett Ratner, Amazon MGM Studios’ Melania follows the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s 2025 presidential inauguration through Melania Trump’s perspective. Amazon’s official synopsis promises a look at inauguration planning, the White House transition, the family’s move to Washington, private conversations, important meetings, and previously unseen spaces.
#1 Best Overall
Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as a 1-hour-44-minute PG documentary and biography. Melania Trump, Hervé Pierre, and David Monn are among the credited participants. The film opened theatrically on January 30, 2026, before arriving on Prime Video on March 9 in more than 240 countries and territories, according to Amazon’s release announcement.
Why critics disliked the documentary
The central complaint is not merely that the film is favorable toward Melania Trump. Critics objected to what they saw as a mismatch between the documentary’s promise of intimacy and the limits of the access it actually provides.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes a film presented with “great pomp and circumstance” that offers little insight. In other words, the production looks substantial, but reviewers felt that its subject remains carefully protected. The documentary presents the visual signals of access—private rooms, major events, fittings, meetings, and moments around the inauguration—without, in critics’ view, producing much unguarded conversation or psychological revelation.
That criticism appeared across the opening reviews. The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck characterized the movie as an unusually lavish hagiography. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described it as orchestrated and airbrushed, while The Guardian’s Xan Brooks gave it an especially severe assessment. Forbes’ early review roundup reported an 8% Tomatometer based on 12 reviews on January 30, before the score moved to 10% as the review count expanded.
The response was overwhelmingly negative rather than literally unanimous. Forbes noted that London Evening Standard critic Melanie McDonagh was the cited top critic with a fresh review, an important qualification when describing the opening reception.
A portrait built around surfaces
Several reviews focused on the film’s attention to clothing, interiors, shoes, objects, and ceremonial settings. TheWrap’s William Bibbiani argued that these details consume space that could have been used to explore Melania Trump’s relationships, humanitarian work, political role, or private life. His review treated the film as closer to a propaganda-style portrait than a searching documentary.
The Los Angeles Times made a related argument. Although the film gestures toward family, business, philanthropy, and Melania Trump’s return as first lady, the review said those subjects receive limited treatment. Instead of sustained conversations or emotionally revealing encounters, the documentary often relies on tightly constrained observational fragments and carefully selected images.

Metacritic’s collection of 18 critic reviews shows the same pattern across multiple outlets. The excerpts use terms such as “shallow,” “airless,” “dull,” “propagandistic,” and “self-serving,” or compare the film to a polished promotional object rather than an investigative or intimate nonfiction work.

A documentary can be openly admiring and still offer insight, if its access leads to candor, contradiction, or an unfamiliar understanding of its subject. The critics’ objection was that Melania appears to offer admiration without enough discovery.
Why the audience score is so high
The 99% Popcornmeter measures a different thing from the 10% Tomatometer. Rotten Tomatoes aggregates professional reviews for the critic score, while the audience score reflects user ratings. Neither number is a universal measure of objective quality, and the gap alone does not show that either critics or viewers acted dishonestly.
Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary presents the movie as polished, elegant, charitable, and fashion-conscious. Those qualities may be precisely what some viewers wanted from a Melania Trump documentary. Someone seeking a respectful, visually refined account of inauguration preparation may find the film successful even if a critic seeking political complexity or personal disclosure finds it empty.
The film also received an A CinemaScore from opening-weekend ticket buyers, according to the Associated Press. AP reported that the opening audience was disproportionately 55 and older, female, and white, with particularly strong performance in states including Florida and Texas. Those details provide context for the positive reception, but they do not prove why each individual audience member rated the film highly.
The safest conclusion is therefore a limited one: Melania appealed strongly to the people who chose to see it and rate it, while professional critics largely wanted a more probing documentary. The score difference is real; its cause is best explained by different expectations, audiences, and standards rather than by unsupported claims of coordinated ratings or manipulation.
The film’s unusually large business and political context
The documentary also arrived with a striking financial backdrop for a nonfiction release. Forbes reported that Amazon paid $40 million for the rights and spent another $35 million on marketing and theatrical distribution, producing a frequently cited total investment of approximately $75 million. Those figures are reported estimates, not an audited production-budget statement from Amazon, so they should be treated accordingly.
The Associated Press reported an opening domestic gross of approximately $7 million and described the film’s theatrical run before its move to Prime Video. AP also quoted analyst David A. Gross, who characterized the project as potentially a political investment rather than a conventional profit-maximizing movie venture. That is an analyst’s interpretation—not an announced explanation of Amazon’s motives.
The transaction attracted political scrutiny as well. In a March 15, 2026 letter, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Hank Johnson referred to the reported $75 million deal and raised questions about the payment and possible anti-bribery concerns. The letter demonstrates that elected officials publicly questioned the arrangement. It does not establish that Amazon, Melania Trump, or anyone else violated anti-bribery law.

How the documentary compares with Melania Trump’s memoir
Readers who want another authorized version of Melania Trump’s public story may also consider Melania by Melania Trump, her 2024 hardcover memoir published by Skyhorse. The book covers her childhood in Slovenia, her modeling career in Europe and New York, and her meeting with Donald Trump, according to the publisher.
Rank #4
The memoir is not a companion volume to the documentary, and it should not be used as proof that the film deliberately omitted particular facts. It is better understood as an adjacent comparison: both are authorized or closely controlled forms of self-presentation, but one uses edited nonfiction film and the other uses a first-person written account. Comparing them may help readers distinguish between the image Melania Trump chooses to present and the deeper access critics hoped the documentary would provide.

The bottom line on the Rotten Tomatoes split
Melania is not a case where one Rotten Tomatoes number cancels out the other. The 10% critic score records a broad professional judgment that the film is too managed, flattering, and surface-focused to function as an revealing behind-the-scenes documentary. The 99% audience score and A CinemaScore show that the film’s intended or likely appeal—polish, ceremony, fashion, access, and a sympathetic portrait—worked very well for the viewers who turned out.
The most accurate description is therefore neither “everyone hated it” nor “critics were wrong.” It is a sharply divided reception to a film whose controlled style was a major attraction for its audience and its defining flaw for many critics.

The Bottom Line

The divide reflects different expectations and measurements—not proof that either side acted in bad faith.
