Inspired by the Costume Institute exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, the carpet moved beyond literal flowers into sand, archival couture, sheer fabric, decay and theatrical volume.
Zendaya’s two appearances, Tyla’s Balmain “sands of time” look and Cardi B’s gothic Windowsen gown defined the night’s most discussed fashion moments. Below is a retrospective of the event, its exhibition context and the best official destinations for red-carpet photographs and video.
Met Gala 2024 at a glance
The 2024 Met Gala turned a broad literary idea into one of the most visually varied red carpets of the year. Flowers, foliage and garden colors were everywhere, but the strongest looks also addressed sand, decay, archival fashion, transparency and the passage of time. Zendaya’s two-look progression, Tyla’s sculptural Balmain gown and Cardi B’s gothic Windowsen creation became defining images of the night.
The gala was the fundraising event for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The party took place on May 6, four days before the exhibition opened to the public. That distinction matters: the red carpet was inspired by the exhibition, but it was not the exhibition itself.

What “The Garden of Time” meant
The dress code referenced J. G. Ballard’s 1962 short story “The Garden of Time.” For the Met Gala, the phrase became a framework for thinking about nature, beauty, transience, decay and renewal. Designers could interpret it literally with flowers and leaves, or more abstractly through fragile materials, antique references, hourglass shapes, distressed surfaces and silhouettes that seemed to dissolve.
That flexibility explains why the carpet looked cohesive without producing one standard outline. Some guests arrived in recognizably botanical designs, while others treated time itself as the subject. Sand, archival couture, sheer fabric and theatrical volume all belonged to the same visual conversation.
The exhibition behind the gala
Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion explored the sensory qualities and fragility of historic garments. The Met presented approximately 220 garments and accessories spanning four centuries on its later exhibition page, while the institution’s original announcement described approximately 250 objects. Those figures reflect different methods of counting and presenting the exhibition rather than two competing accounts of its central scope.
The exhibition was not simply a conventional display of clothes behind glass. Because many historic garments can no longer be worn, touched, heard or smelled as they were in life, The Met used conservation research and immersive technologies to reactivate them for visitors. The experience incorporated video animation, soundscapes, light projection, artificial intelligence, computer-generated imagery, x-rays and scent-related elements.
The idea of reawakening vulnerable fashion carried directly onto the red carpet. Transparent fabrics suggested fragility. Old couture connected the present to fashion history. Flowers evoked growth and renewal, while weathered or time-related details suggested that even beautiful objects are temporary.
Zendaya supplied the evening’s clearest narrative
As a co-chair, Zendaya had a particularly visible role, and her two appearances gave the evening a beginning-and-end quality. Her first look was a custom Maison Margiela Artisanal design by John Galliano. It used a corseted foundation, an hourglass silhouette, sage lamé and organza to create a look that felt both botanical and time-conscious.
Zendaya later returned in a vintage Givenchy couture look from Galliano’s spring/summer 1996 collection. A dramatic Philip Treacy fascinator completed the appearance. The second look made the archival dimension of the theme explicit: rather than treating fashion history as background, it placed a historic couture piece at the center of the night’s contemporary spectacle.

Taken together, the two looks showed why Zendaya was central to the night’s coverage. The first translated the theme through new couture construction and materials; the second connected it to an earlier runway moment. The progression was about more than changing outfits—it linked renewal with preservation and made the passage of fashion through time visible.

Tyla made the “sands of time” literal
Tyla’s Balmain look was among the most direct interpretations of the dress code. The body-hugging gown was made in multiple shades of sand, with micro-crystal detailing and an organza mermaid train. She carried a Balmain hourglass clutch, turning the theme’s reference to time into a clearly readable accessory.
The look was designed around ephemerality. Sand is difficult to hold, shape and preserve, yet Balmain transformed the idea of a transient substance into a sculptural evening gown. The crystals added a shifting, granular surface, while the train gave the silhouette a sense of movement and ceremony. It was a useful counterpoint to the night’s flower-heavy styling because it addressed the theme through material and metaphor rather than garden decoration.
Cardi B brought gothic scale to the garden
Cardi B wore an avant-garde black Windowsen gown designed by Sensen Lii. The off-the-shoulder look used extensive tulle and a sweeping train, creating a dramatic mass of fabric that dominated the carpet around her.
Its interpretation of “The Garden of Time” was darker and more theatrical than a conventional floral gown. The black color, extreme volume and gothic mood suggested a garden after sunset—or a romantic image already touched by decay. Cardi B’s appearance demonstrated how the dress code could support dark fantasy and sculptural drama as convincingly as it supported pastel flowers and garden greenery.

Transparency was one of the carpet’s recurring effects. Sheer and semi-transparent materials made garments appear delicate, exposed or almost temporary, echoing the exhibition’s interest in fashion that cannot last forever.
Vogue’s documented coverage included Emily Ratajkowski in vintage Versace, Brie Larson, Kelsea Ballerini in Michael Kors Collection and Kim Kardashian in a custom John Galliano/Maison Margiela look among the arrivals that contributed to this translucent, botanical mood. These looks did not all interpret the theme in the same way, but they shared an interest in the tension between revealing the body and making the clothing seem to disappear.

Four ways to read the night’s fashion
The most successful thematic translations generally fell into four overlapping groups:
| Interpretation | What appeared on the carpet | Representative examples |
|---|---|---|
| Literal nature | Flowers, leaves, vines, insects and garden colors. | Botanical ornament and living-garden references across the arrivals. |
| Time and ephemerality | Hourglass accessories, sand-like materials, distressed surfaces and antique effects. | Tyla’s Balmain gown and hourglass clutch. |
| Archival fashion | Vintage couture and designs connected to earlier runway collections. | Zendaya’s vintage Givenchy couture look and archival runway references throughout the coverage. |
| Sensory spectacle | Unusual textures, exaggerated volume and silhouettes designed to be understood in photographs. | Cardi B’s expansive Windowsen gown and the carpet’s highly sculptural looks. |
Runway comparisons added important context to the arrivals. They allowed viewers to see whether a look was custom-made, vintage or directly adapted from an earlier collection, and to compare the gala version with its original catwalk debut. That provenance is especially valuable for an exhibition-themed event, because it shows that the red carpet was participating in fashion history rather than simply borrowing its visual vocabulary.

The carpet as a complete visual scene
The atmosphere extended beyond individual clothes. Independent event coverage described a green-tinged carpet surrounded by live foliage, reinforcing the impression that guests were entering a constructed garden rather than walking across a neutral step-and-repeat.
That setting helped unify very different interpretations. A sand-colored gown, a black tulle train, a vintage couture piece and a floral sheer look could all be read against the same living, changing environment. The result was a carpet that worked as a sequence of visual arguments about nature and time, not just a list of celebrity outfits.

For a full arrival gallery, Vogue’s Met Gala 2024 Red Carpet feature is the primary editorial destination identified in the event coverage. It documents the celebrity arrivals and supplies designer and look information as the gallery developed. Its runway comparisons are particularly useful when a garment’s vintage or archival status is part of the story.
For moving images, Vogue’s official red-carpet replay preserves the livestream hosted by Gwendoline Christie, La La Anthony, Ashley Graham and Emma Chamberlain. The replay provides arrival order, interviews, styling details and the atmosphere of the carpet—things still photographs cannot fully convey.
Vogue also published a separate inside-event gallery with candid and backstage-style photographs made by Vogue photographers. It offers a different view of the evening after the arrivals, while Getty Images maintains a large searchable archive of Met Gala 2024 photographs, including red-carpet images of Zendaya and other attendees.
Getty’s archive is useful for image discovery and for publishers researching licensed photography, but its images should not be treated as free editorial assets. Anyone reproducing a Getty or Vogue photograph should confirm the applicable permission and licensing terms. Associated Press coverage adds independent photojournalistic context, particularly around the green carpet, live foliage and the broader visual atmosphere.

Why the 2024 Met Gala remains memorable
The 2024 gala succeeded because “The Garden of Time” was broad enough to reward different kinds of imagination. Zendaya used archival couture and a two-look progression to connect present-day celebrity fashion with the past. Tyla made an abstract idea concrete through sand and an hourglass. Cardi B chose gothic scale and theatrical darkness. Sheer looks addressed fragility, while floral and garden references established the most literal reading of the brief.

That variety made the red carpet a fitting prelude to Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, an exhibition concerned with bringing fragile, historic fashion back to life through research, technology and the imagination of the viewer.
