With celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan holding the scissors and actress Leslie Bibb looking on, Bush Hager’s shoulder-length blonde hair became a modern bob inspired by Bibb’s much-discussed haircut from season 3 of The White Lotus.
Leslie Bibb’s bob was the starting point
Bibb was serving as Bush Hager’s guest co-host when she introduced McMillan during the makeover segment. The stylist had created Bibb’s White Lotus-associated bob, making her haircut the obvious reference for Bush Hager’s transformation.

McMillan made the first cut on live television
Bush Hager sat in a salon chair while McMillan began cutting in front of the studio audience and viewers at home. The moment was deliberately high-stakes: the first major snip immediately made the hair appear much shorter, prompting Bush Hager to react with surprise.
According to McMillan’s account reported by E!, he had only about 10 minutes to consult with Bush Hager before the segment. He reportedly blow-dried her roots but did not have the kind of extended preparation normally associated with a celebrity haircut or makeover. The initial cut, therefore, happened on camera rather than after a lengthy private styling session.
What the finished haircut looked like
The completed cut had several practical details:
- A modern blonde bob: The overall silhouette was cleaner and more compact than Bush Hager’s previous shoulder-length style.
- A shorter nape: The hair was cut shorter at the back of the neck, helping establish the bob’s shape.
- A relatively blunt perimeter: McMillan kept the lower edge comparatively strong instead of building a heavily layered style.
- Longer front pieces: The front remained long enough to tuck behind Bush Hager’s ears or pull back when needed.
- Face-framing softness: The front sections kept the cut from looking like a rigid, one-length helmet shape.
That balance between a sharper back and more flexible front was important to the design. McMillan said the length was chosen with Bush Hager’s routine in mind, including the possibility of wearing the hair in a low ponytail while exercising. That is a stylist’s explanation of this particular cut, not a universal rule that every bob should be designed the same way.

Why McMillan chose a bob
McMillan explained that cutting the hair into a cleaner shape could remove damaged ends, grown-out layers and some unwanted color. Those comments were part of his explanation of Bush Hager’s makeover; they should not be read as independent testing or a guarantee that a bob will correct every hair or color concern.
For Bush Hager, the cut also created a visible change without requiring an extremely short crop. The longer front allowed her to retain styling options, while the shorter nape gave the haircut the unmistakable structure of a bob.
The finished look appeared the next day
The live cutting took place on June 16. TODAY presented the completed transformation in a follow-up broadcast on June 17, giving viewers a clearer view of the finished shape after the on-air reveal.
