Green: Music theory concepts
KEY, PITCH, SCALE, TONE
These are all standard music-related terms. A key establishes a composition’s tonal center. Pitch describes how high or low a sound is, while a scale is an ordered sequence of notes. Tone can refer to the quality or character of a musical sound.
Blue: Things with strings
BALLOON, KITE, TEA BAG, YO-YO
Each item can be associated with a physical string or cord. A balloon can be tied to one, a kite flies on one, and a tea bag commonly has a string attached. A yo-yo operates by winding and unwinding on its string.
Rank #3
Purple: Metaphors for quickness
ARROW, LIGHTNING, ROCKET, WIND
These words can suggest speed or rapid movement when used figuratively: something may move like lightning, be rocket-fast, or be described as quick as the wind. An arrow is also a familiar image for something moving swiftly.
What makes this puzzle tricky?
The purple group is the most likely place to hesitate. ARROW, LIGHTNING, ROCKET, and WIND all evoke speed, but the category is not simply “fast things.” They work as metaphors for quickness.
The green group may also feel broad because KEY, PITCH, SCALE, and TONE are general music terms rather than four narrowly technical labels. Once those four are considered together, however, the connection is clear.
Rank #4
One external puzzle guide rated Connections #1,010 at 2.5 out of 5 for difficulty. That is an editorial assessment, not an official New York Times rating.

When several words seem related, look for the most precise connection. The same word can appear to fit multiple ideas, and those deliberate overlaps are usually the puzzle’s main source of difficulty.
