The Rainmaker has premiered and completed its first season. USA Network’s adaptation of John Grisham’s 1995 legal novel debuted on August 15, 2025, ran for 10 episodes and was renewed for season two, which is planned for fall 2026. The exact return date has not yet been announced.
The Rainmaker is no longer an upcoming series: USA Network’s legal drama premiered on August 15, 2025, completed its 10-episode first season on October 17, 2025, and has been renewed for season two. The series adapts John Grisham’s 1995 novel, following newly qualified lawyer Rudy Baylor as he takes on a powerful hospital organization while working from an unconventional law office.
Season two is planned for fall 2026, but USA Network has not announced an exact premiere date. Here is the confirmed cast, story, viewing information, season-one ending, season-two setup and connection to the 1997 movie.
What is The Rainmaker about?
At the center of the series is Rudy Baylor, a newly graduated lawyer trying to establish himself in a profession dominated by wealthy firms and experienced courtroom specialists. Rudy joins the small practice run by Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone, whose office operates out of a former taco restaurant rather than a polished corporate tower.
Rudy, Bruiser and their paralegal, Deck Shifflet, become involved in a case that reaches far beyond an ordinary lawsuit. They investigate the suspicious death of a client’s son and uncover allegations involving serial-killer nurse Melvin Pritcher and the hospital giant Great Benefit. The legal battle places Rudy against Leo F. Drummond, a celebrated courtroom lawyer representing the opposing side.

The series also adds a personal conflict through Sarah Plankmore, Rudy’s former law-school girlfriend. Sarah is now an attorney working on Drummond’s side, putting her professional loyalties and past relationship with Rudy in direct conflict.
Although the show retains the novel’s courtroom and underdog foundations, its serialized format expands the story into a broader drama involving corporate misconduct, murder, romance, revenge and the consequences of challenging powerful institutions. USA Network’s official series overview and Peacock’s release guide describe the adaptation’s central legal conflict and its unconventional setting.
The Rainmaker cast
Season-one cast and characters
- Milo Callaghan as Rudy Baylor: The newly qualified attorney and central character.
- Lana Parrilla as Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone: Rudy’s boss and the force behind the small, unconventional practice. This version of Bruiser is gender-swapped from the character in the 1997 film.
- P.J. Byrne as Deck Shifflet: Bruiser’s disheveled but important paralegal.
- John Slattery as Leo F. Drummond: A powerful courtroom lawyer and Rudy’s principal professional antagonist.
- Madison Iseman as Sarah Plankmore: Rudy’s former girlfriend and an attorney working for Drummond’s side.
- Dan Fogler as Melvin Pritcher.
- Wade Briggs as Brad Noonan.
- Robyn Cara as Kelly Riker.
- Karen Bryson as Dot Black.
- Hugh Quarshie as Wilfred R. Keeley.
- Kevin Ryan as Liam Donnelly.
- Tommie Earl Jenkins as Prince Thomas.
USA’s season-one announcement identifies Callaghan, Slattery, Parrilla, Iseman, Byrne, Fogler, Briggs and Cara among the principal cast. The wider character list is reflected in the show’s current production and cast information.
Season-two cast
USA Network renewed The Rainmaker on October 23, 2025, confirming that the drama would return in 2026. The renewal and subsequent casting announcements establish several new season-two players:
- Austin Nichols as Tom Cassidy: Bruiser’s ex-husband, a former baseball player who became a minor-league coach and is drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. Nichols has a recurring guest-star role. USA detailed the casting in its season-two guest-star announcement.
- Merle Dandridge as Amanda Vonn: A powerhouse attorney who offers Sarah a new professional opportunity and becomes another adversary for Rudy.
- Richard Kind as Larry Shifflet: Deck’s father.
- Kevin Ryan as Liam Donnelly: A corporate vice president described as having a hidden agenda.
- Asher DeLand as Victor Suffredes: A troubled young character.
The returning season-two players are expected to include Milo Callaghan, Lana Parrilla, Madison Iseman, P.J. Byrne and Karen Bryson. John Slattery has also been listed among the returning principal players in current reporting, but USA has not published a complete cast announcement defining every returning character’s involvement. The safest reading is that these are reported or expected returns, not a complete official season-two billing.

Where can you watch The Rainmaker?
In the United States, the original broadcast home was USA Network. Episodes also rolled out on Peacock according to a staggered schedule:
- The first two episodes became available on Peacock the day after the USA Network premiere.
- Each remaining episode became available one week after its USA Network broadcast.
That schedule means the show was not released as a complete Peacock box set alongside the broadcast premiere. Availability can change after the original run, and the supplied release information confirms the U.S. rollout rather than a worldwide streaming arrangement. Viewers outside the United States should check their local broadcaster or streaming service because international availability is not established by the cited U.S. announcements.
Season-one story and ending (spoilers)
Do not continue if you want to avoid season-one spoilers.
Season one follows Rudy’s representation of Dot Black, whose son died after receiving an opioid dose administered by Melvin Pritcher, a nurse identified as a serial killer. Rudy’s team argues that Great Benefit, the hospital giant connected to the case, helped conceal the wrongdoing.

Rudy, Bruiser and Deck must connect the individual criminal conduct to the alleged corporate conspiracy while facing the resources and courtroom experience of Drummond’s side.
The season culminates with Rudy and Leo facing one another in court. Great Benefit is found guilty of conspiracy to conceal murder, and Dot receives an $82 million judgment.
The victory does not resolve every conflict. Rudy’s success carries professional consequences, while Bruiser’s history and Sarah’s changing position within the legal establishment remain important unresolved threads. Those loose ends provide part of the foundation for season two.

USA’s published description says:
“Rudy, Deck, and Bruiser face old adversaries and new ones in a case where the lives of hundreds of children hang in the balance, and where winning might be just as dangerous as losing.”
The wording points to a new high-stakes legal story rather than a simple continuation of the Great Benefit lawsuit. Showrunner Michael Seitzman has indicated that season two will involve multiple cases. The season is therefore expected to widen the show’s legal world while continuing the relationships and rivalries established in the first season.
Tom Cassidy’s dangerous conspiracy, Amanda Vonn’s professional challenge to Rudy, Sarah’s new opportunity and the unresolved consequences of the first-season judgment are among the confirmed or reported elements that may shape the next chapter. However, USA has not released a complete episode-by-episode synopsis, final episode count or exact premiere date.
Who created the series?
The Rainmaker was developed for television by Jason Richman and Michael Seitzman, with Seitzman serving as showrunner. The series is produced by Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television.
