Early casting coverage identified the character by the name Yara Page, but the final character name is Kiana Cook. The more important distinction is Cook’s place in the department: she is introduced at the patrol level, not as a new Intelligence detective.
That means Cook should not be described as Hailey Upton’s exact replacement. Upton was an Intelligence Unit detective, while Cook brings a patrol perspective to the ensemble. In practical terms, Season 12 responds to Upton’s departure by adding a different kind of officer rather than simply recasting the same job and story function. That is an interpretation of the season’s cast structure, not a claim that the show has assigned Cook Upton’s former position.
Shawn Hatosy as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid
Shawn Hatosy joins the season in a recurring role as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid. Reid is positioned above the Intelligence Unit, giving the season a new source of institutional pressure rather than another detective competing for a place on Voight’s team.
His ongoing conflict with Voight becomes one of Season 12’s principal story threads. Reid is not simply an administrative obstacle: the season presents him as someone who, like Voight, is willing to cross conventional boundaries when he believes the circumstances justify it. That makes him a useful mirror for Voight. The tension comes from how the two men use similar instincts and the choices they make with them.
Sara Bues as ASA Nina Chapman
Sara Bues returns as recurring Assistant State’s Attorney Nina Chapman. Chapman supplies the legal perspective that often challenges Voight’s methods, but she is also a personal foil rather than a purely procedural character.

Returning Chicago P.D. characters in Season 12
Jason Beghe as Sergeant Hank Voight
Jason Beghe returns as Sergeant Hank Voight, the leader of the Intelligence Unit and the show’s central institutional and moral point of view. Voight continues to rely on aggressive, sometimes morally compromised methods, but Season 12 places those methods under especially direct scrutiny.
Deputy Chief Charlie Reid becomes the principal new force challenging Voight’s authority. Their conflict asks whether Voight’s results-oriented approach can survive pressure from someone who understands—and may share—the same willingness to operate outside normal boundaries.
Patrick John Flueger as Officer Adam Ruzek
Patrick John Flueger returns as Officer Adam Ruzek, a core member of Intelligence. His Season 12 story is closely tied to Kim Burgess, with their long-running relationship finally reaching a decisive milestone in the finale.
Marina Squerciati as Officer/Detective Kim Burgess
Marina Squerciati returns as Kim Burgess. Burgess remains part of the central District 21 ensemble while taking a significant step in her personal life with Ruzek.

LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater
LaRoyce Hawkins is back as Officer Kevin Atwater. Atwater remains an important returning District 21 officer, even as the season continues to leave room for questions about how the unit’s members might develop professionally.
Before the season, reports discussed the possibility that Atwater, Ruzek, Burgess, or Torres could pursue a detective exam or another advancement. Those possibilities should not be presented as confirmed Season 12 promotions or casting changes.

Benjamin Levy Aguilar returns as Officer Dante Torres. Torres’s development continues through both his work and his personal vulnerability, which become relevant to the larger tension between Voight and Reid.
Amy Morton as Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt
Amy Morton remains in the cast as Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt. Platt continues to be the senior desk-sergeant presence and one of the clearest links between the current District 21 team and the show’s long-running ensemble.
Is Hailey Upton in Chicago P.D. Season 12?
No. Hailey Upton is not part of the Season 12 returning cast. Tracy Spiridakos exited Chicago P.D. at the end of Season 11, after Upton spent seven full seasons with the series. Upton left the Intelligence Unit and Chicago in the Season 11 finale, and Season 12 begins without her.

It is more accurate to say that Kiana Cook is a new patrol-level addition following Upton’s departure than to call Cook Upton’s replacement. The characters occupy different roles: Cook is a patrol officer, while Upton was an Intelligence detective.

Are any Season 12 promotions confirmed?
The pre-season discussion about possible detective exams and promotions for Atwater, Ruzek, Burgess, or Torres was story speculation, not a confirmed Season 12 casting change. Readers should distinguish between an actor returning in the same broad ensemble role and a character receiving an on-screen promotion or transferring into a different unit.

Stop here if you have not finished Season 12.
The 22-episode season concludes with “Vows,” which combines the continuing Reid-Voight conflict with the wedding of Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek. Their marriage changes the status of one of the show’s central relationships and begins a new phase for the pair as a married couple building a family life.
The finale also completes the season’s comparison between Voight and Reid. Both men are willing to move beyond conventional limits, but the story distinguishes them through the decisions they make and the consequences of those decisions. Reid’s role therefore matters beyond his status as a recurring guest character: he is the season’s principal institutional and ideological challenge to Voight.
The finale’s discussion of Nina Chapman points to potential future use of the character, but it is not confirmation of the full Season 13 cast, a specific return date, or a guaranteed number of episodes.

Bottom line
Season 12 is not a simple one-for-one replacement story after Hailey Upton’s exit. Toya Turner’s Kiana Cook expands the patrol side of the ensemble, while Shawn Hatosy’s Charlie Reid adds a recurring deputy-chief antagonist who challenges Voight at the institutional level. The returning core remains intact around Voight, Ruzek, Burgess, Atwater, Torres, and Platt, with Burgess and Ruzek’s wedding providing the season’s biggest personal turning point.
