Rescuers initially worked through changing reports as they searched the rubble. Later coverage put the death toll at 236. The victims included Pérez, former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi and sister of baseball star Nelson Cruz. Their deaths underscored the disaster’s impact across Dominican public life, but Pérez’s loss was felt especially deeply in the country’s music community.
The precise cause of the roof collapse was not something that could responsibly be settled by early reports or public speculation. A government-backed technical investigation and criminal case followed the disaster.
Dominican Republic mourned Pérez as a national musical figure
President Luis Abinader attended a public funeral tribute for Pérez at the Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito on April 10, 2025. The service was open to the public, and Pérez’s daughter, Zulinka Pérez, performed during the tribute. Pérez was later buried at Puerta del Cielo cemetery, according to the Dominican presidency’s account of the ceremony.

The government declared official mourning on April 8, 9, and 10 following the Jet Set disaster. For many Dominicans, mourning Pérez meant grieving not only an individual performer but also a singer whose voice had been part of the country’s cultural life for decades.
What happened after the Jet Set collapse?
The National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure, known by its Spanish acronym ONESVIE, was assigned a role in the technical investigation. In later government documentation, ONESVIE described increased demand for structural evaluations after the disaster and documented procurement related to structural-analysis software for the forensic investigation. That work formed part of the effort to examine what happened to the building; it did not by itself establish a final criminal finding.

A former employee testified that the owners knew the structure was deteriorated, according to related coverage. That testimony was an allegation presented in court, not a final judicial finding. The criminal case remained an active proceeding in the latest reporting reviewed for this account, so neither the owners’ culpability nor the definitive cause of the collapse should be described as finally established unless a later authoritative ruling says so.

Pérez’s career connected several generations of Dominican merengue. His training at the National Conservatory of Music, his breakthrough with Wilfrido Vargas, and his subsequent solo work gave him a place both in the genre’s professional history and in the everyday soundtrack of Dominican life.
His death while performing made the loss especially painful: Pérez was not simply remembered as a retired star, but as a working musician still sharing merengue with a live audience. The public tribute, his daughter’s performance, and the official recognition of his career reflected the scale of that legacy.

Rubby Pérez is remembered as “La voz más alta del merengue,” but the circumstances of his death also place him among the 236 victims of the Jet Set roof collapse. Both parts of that story matter: the country lost a major singer, and an evening of music became a national tragedy whose technical and legal consequences continued after the funerals.
