Short answer: Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila left Fire Country as part of a planned Season 4 creative reset. Arcila’s Gabriela Perez was given a new life away from Edgewater after producers decided the Bode-Gabriela relationship needed a reset. Burke’s Vince Leone was killed in the Zabel Ridge fire so the series could explore the danger and emotional cost of first-responder work.

Spoilers for the Fire Country Season 3 finale and Season 4 premiere follow.

Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila left Fire Country because the series underwent a deliberate creative reset after Season 3—not because the available reporting established an illness, feud, salary dispute, or other behind-the-scenes conflict.

Arcila’s Gabriela Perez was written out as a series regular after producers decided that the character’s relationship with Bode Leone needed to change. Gabriela left Edgewater for a new opportunity, keeping a possible guest return open. Burke’s Vince Leone had a much more final exit: Season 4 confirmed that he died in the Zabel Ridge fire. Showrunner Tia Napolitano said Vince’s death was planned to restore the show’s first-responder stakes and give its characters—and viewers—a loss they could genuinely mourn.

Why did Stephanie Arcila leave Fire Country?

Stephanie Arcila’s departure was a creative decision centered on Gabriela’s increasingly complicated story with Bode. Co-creator Tony Phelan said the exit “came out of the dynamic between Bode and Gabriela” and that the characters needed a reset. The explanation suggests that the production wanted to break open the show’s established romantic cycle rather than continue repeating the same conflicts.

Arcila said the decision surprised her. In an interview after the Season 3 finale, she explained that she learned Gabriela was being written out while filming the finale and described the news as a complete shock. That account does not support the simple idea that she voluntarily quit in protest. The more accurate description is that the production chose not to retain Gabriela as a series regular, while Arcila responded professionally and remained open to what might happen next.

Her exit came after the resolution of Gabriela’s Season 3 stalker storyline. Audrey helped protect Gabriela from Finn, allowing the finale to move her story toward a transition rather than a fatal conclusion. That choice mattered: the writers could separate Gabriela from Bode without closing off the character permanently.

In the Season 4 premiere, Gabriela left Edgewater for a new job or adventure. The show framed the move as a positive new chapter—a happy and successful life rather than a punishment or tragedy. The producers and Napolitano have both indicated that they would be open to Arcila returning in a guest or recurring role, but that is not confirmation of a booked appearance.

Why was Billy Burke’s Vince Leone killed off?

Billy Burke’s exit was more dramatic and more permanent. The Season 3 finale ended with Vince, Sharon, and Walter trapped inside a collapsing care facility during the Zabel Ridge fire. Before Season 4 premiered, the production kept Vince’s fate deliberately ambiguous so the cliffhanger could work as intended.

Season 4 resolved the question: Vince did not survive. The official CBS episode listings identify the Season 4 premiere as October 17, 2025, and the subsequent episodes deal with Station 42 and Sharon coping with Vince’s death.

Napolitano said Vince’s death was planned as a storytelling decision. The creative team knew Burke would not be part of Season 4 and chose to make the departure matter by killing Vince rather than quietly transferring him elsewhere. In her explanation, Fire Country is a drama about dangerous work, and the series needed to reconnect with the real possibility that first responders can be lost.

Vince’s death also echoes the earlier death of Riley, whose loss helped shape the series and the Leone family. By making viewers experience Vince’s death alongside Sharon, Bode, and the rest of the station, the writers created a new emotional foundation for Season 4 instead of treating the cast change as an off-screen adjustment.

Were Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila fired after a feud?

There is no reliable evidence in the available reporting that either actor left because of a feud, medical issue, salary disagreement, or dissatisfaction with the show. Those explanations should not be presented as fact.

The confirmed accounts point to two related but distinct production choices:

  • Gabriela’s exit: Producers wanted to reset the Bode-Gabriela relationship and give Gabriela an independent path. Arcila was surprised by the decision, and the character was left alive and potentially available for a future appearance.
  • Vince’s exit: The creative team wanted a consequential death that would reflect the risks of firefighting and generate grief, new responsibilities, and fresh conflict for the characters.

So “shocking exits” accurately describes the audience reaction, especially because both departures happened as the show was entering a new season. It does not establish that the actors’ exits were caused by personal disputes.

Why did both departures happen at the same time?

The two exits helped Fire Country redistribute its story in Season 4. The show lost a central parent figure, a major romantic relationship, and the battalion chief who anchored Station 42. That created several immediate consequences:

  1. Bode lost both a parent and his established romantic counterpart. Vince’s death gave Bode a new grief and leadership problem, while Gabriela’s departure removed the relationship that had defined much of his emotional storyline.
  2. Sharon’s future changed permanently. Vince’s death made mourning, recovery, and the question of how to continue without him central to Sharon’s arc.
  3. Station 42 needed new authority. The loss of its battalion chief opened space for new leadership, rival priorities, and workplace tension.
  4. Gabriela gained narrative independence. Moving her away from Edgewater allowed the character to pursue a new job and life instead of remaining trapped in the Bode-Gabriela cycle.

The broader Season 4 framing was about “rising from the ashes,” redemption, vengeance, forgiveness, and recovery. Those themes work more forcefully after the show removes familiar safety nets and asks its characters to rebuild.

Could Gabriela return to Fire Country?

Yes, Gabriela’s return remains possible in principle. The character was not killed, and both the producers and Napolitano have left open the possibility of a guest or recurring appearance. Arcila has also suggested that viewers should not assume the door is permanently closed.

However, openness is not the same as an announcement. Unless CBS or the production officially confirms a future appearance, Gabriela should be described as a former series regular who could return—not as a character already scheduled to come back.

Could Vince return?

Vince’s normal return is unlikely because Fire Country canonically confirmed his death in the Season 4 premiere. A flashback, dream sequence, archival clip, or special appearance is technically possible in a television drama, but no such appearance should be promised.

For the current story, the important point is that Vince’s death is being treated as a genuine loss. Bringing him back as though nothing happened would undermine the grief and leadership consequences the writers deliberately created.

What do the exits mean for the future of the show?

The departures did not mean that Fire Country was canceled. The series continued through Season 4, and reporting indicated that CBS renewed the parent series for Season 5. The Season 4 finale, titled “Try Not to Drown,” involved a catastrophic dam failure and flooding in Edgewater, showing that the series continued to build large-scale emergencies after the cast shake-up.

Napolitano was separately reported to be leaving as showrunner at the conclusion of Season 4, while creators Max Thieriot, Tony Phelan, and Joan Rater were reported to remain involved. That is another production change, but it should not be confused with the reasons given for Burke’s and Arcila’s character exits.

The short answer

Stephanie Arcila left because producers wanted to reset Gabriela’s relationship with Bode and give the character a separate future. Gabriela survived and could theoretically return. Billy Burke left because the show chose to kill off Vince in the Zabel Ridge fire, using his death to restore the danger of first-responder work and create new emotional and leadership storylines.

Both exits were major parts of Fire Country’s Season 4 creative reset. The available evidence supports a story-driven explanation—not rumors that either actor left because of illness, a feud, or a confirmed dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Billy Burke leave Fire Country because of a feud?

No. The available reporting does not establish that Billy Burke left because of illness, a feud, a salary dispute, or dissatisfaction with Fire Country. The showrunner described Vince’s death as a planned creative decision.

Did Stephanie Arcila quit Fire Country?

Not exactly. Arcila said she was surprised and learned Gabriela was being written out while filming the Season 3 finale. The production made the decision, although Arcila accepted it and remained open to future opportunities.

Could Gabriela return to Fire Country?

Possibly, but no return has been officially confirmed in the supplied reporting. Gabriela survived, and producers said they were open to bringing her back in a guest or recurring capacity.

Is Billy Burke’s Vince Leone really dead?

Vince died in the Zabel Ridge fire, as confirmed in the Season 4 premiere. A flashback or special appearance is theoretically possible, but the show’s current canon treats his death as real and consequential.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Gabriela was written out to reset the Bode-Gabriela story, while Vince was deliberately killed to give Fire Country a meaningful first-responder loss. Arcila’s return remains possible; Burke’s character is canonically dead. Neither exit has been reliably tied to a feud, illness, or salary dispute.
