NYT Connections answers for Sunday, May 25, 2025
Stop here if you still want to solve the puzzle yourself. The complete groups are below.
#1 Best Overall
Yellow: PLAYING CARDS
ACE, JACK, KING, QUEEN
These are four familiar named ranks in a conventional deck of playing cards, and all are also common terms in poker. If you enjoy card games, a set of standard playing cards can make it easy to explore the card-rank connection outside the puzzle—but no physical deck is needed to solve Connections.
Green: DOPPELGÄNGER
CLONE, DOUBLE, RINGER, TWIN
Each word can describe a person or thing that closely resembles another. “Ringer” is the less obvious entry: used informally, it can mean someone who looks remarkably like another person.
Blue: EAR PIERCING SITES
CONCH, HELIX, LOBE, ROOK
These refer to areas or placements associated with ear piercings. The group is likely to be the most specialized one for many players, since “conch,” “helix,” and “rook” are not equally familiar as ear anatomy or piercing terms.
Purple: ___ MAIL
CHAIN, ELECTRONIC, JUNK, SNAIL
Put each word before “mail” to complete the phrases chain mail, electronic mail, junk mail, and snail mail. The clue’s “sounds like fail” hint points to snail.
The complete 16-word board
For reference, the words in game #714 were:
DOUBLE, HELIX, SNAIL, KING, CONCH, QUEEN, TWIN, ROOK, ELECTRONIC, JUNK, ACE, RINGER, JACK, LOBE, CLONE, CHAIN
Why this puzzle can be tricky
The board includes several words that invite misleading visual or anatomical associations. HELIX and CONCH can suggest natural shapes or body parts, while SNAIL may initially look as though it belongs with objects that curl. It instead belongs to the phrase group with “mail.”
RINGER is another trap. It may first suggest sound, phones, or bells, but in this puzzle it means a close lookalike and belongs with CLONE, DOUBLE, and TWIN.
Rank #3
A strong solving route is to begin with the most recognizable group: ACE, JACK, KING, and QUEEN. Once those four card ranks are removed, the duplication group becomes easier to see. The ear-piercing and “___ mail” groups can then be separated by matching the remaining words rather than relying on the distracting shape associations.
How NYT Connections works
Connections presents 16 words that must be divided into four groups of four. Each group has a shared connection, and the groups are identified by difficulty colors: yellow, green, blue, and purple. Players have a limited number of incorrect guesses, so an apparently plausible group may be worth testing carefully before submitting it.
