Netflix’s Running Point follows Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon as she unexpectedly takes over her family’s fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball team. Here’s the Season 1 starting lineup, the expanded Season 2 cast and the real-life basketball-world inspiration behind the comedy.
Running Point is Netflix’s workplace comedy about Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), a woman who unexpectedly takes charge of her family’s fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. The series combines front-office politics, sibling rivalry, player drama and celebrity cameos, with the team’s survival depending as much on the Gordons’ ability to work together as on what happens on the court.

Created by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, the 10-episode comedy takes loose inspiration from Los Angeles Lakers president and owner Jeanie Buss. The Waves, however, are fictional, and Isla is not presented as a direct dramatization of Buss. Netflix’s cast guide describes the Buss connection as inspiration for the character and the show’s basketball dynasty.

Who plays Isla Gordon? Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson leads the series as Isla Gordon, the only daughter in the Gordon family. Isla has always cared deeply about basketball, but her family has kept her away from the franchise’s top decision-making role. That changes when her older brother Cam’s destructive conduct forces a leadership shake-up and she is installed as president of the Waves.

#1 Best Overall
Isla’s challenge is larger than learning the job. She must establish authority with employees who expected a different Gordon to be in charge, manage a volatile roster and navigate a family that treats professional decisions as personal disputes. Her position also creates tension in her relationship with Lev and with Jay, the team’s coach.
Brenda Song as Ali Lee
Brenda Song plays Ali Lee, Isla’s longtime best friend and the Waves’ chief of staff. Ali knows the Gordon family’s history and internal politics, which makes her one of the few people able to tell Isla what she needs to hear without becoming overwhelmed by the family drama.
As Isla’s behind-the-scenes ally, Ali helps translate the president’s ambitions into workable decisions. Her role places her at the intersection of the team’s business operations, the Gordon family’s competing agendas and the crises that arrive from the playing group.
Drew Tarver as Sandy Gordon
Drew Tarver plays Sandy Gordon, the family’s financially minded sibling and the Waves’ chief financial officer. Sandy is highly intelligent, but Netflix characterizes him as alienated from the family and notably unathletic—a sharp contrast with the basketball-centered world he is expected to help run.
His priority is making the franchise profitable or returning it to greatness. That practical focus can put him at odds with Isla, whose decisions are often driven by loyalty, instinct and her desire to prove that she belongs in leadership.
Scott MacArthur as Ness Gordon
Scott MacArthur portrays Ness Gordon, the Waves’ emotionally sensitive and often chaotic general manager. Ness briefly played professional basketball before moving into the front office, where he is still trying to prove himself to his siblings and the wider organization.
Rank #2
His experience as a former player gives him a connection to the team that Sandy lacks, but his insecurity and impulsiveness complicate the job. Ness is both a member of the family leadership group and an executive who must demonstrate that he deserves his position.
Justin Theroux as Cameron “Cam” Gordon
Justin Theroux plays Cameron “Cam” Gordon, the oldest Gordon sibling and the Waves president when the story begins. Cam’s behavior precipitates Isla’s unexpected promotion, but removing him from the center of the franchise does not remove him from the family or the team.

Season 2 develops Cam’s return and his complicated relationship with Isla’s presidency. Netflix lists Theroux among the Season 2 regulars, making Cam’s presence part of the broader second-season ensemble rather than simply a Season 1 departure.
Max Greenfield as Lev Levenson
Max Greenfield plays Lev Levenson, Isla’s good-natured fiancé and a pediatrician. Lev offers Isla an emotional refuge away from the Waves’ professional and family chaos, although that separation becomes difficult as her new job consumes more of her life.
The Season 1 story places Isla’s relationship with Lev in tension with her connection to Jay. Lev is not a basketball executive or player, but his relationship with Isla gives the series a perspective outside the franchise’s constant emergencies.
Jay Ellis as Jay Brown
Jay Ellis plays Jay Brown, a former Waves star who becomes the team’s head coach. Jay approaches the organization’s on-court and off-court disorder with a calm, almost zen-like manner, making him a counterweight to the Gordon family’s volatility.

His history as a player gives him credibility with the roster, while his new position requires him to work with Isla as she learns to run the franchise. The professional relationship is complicated by their personal connection, particularly as Isla tries to balance the demands of the team with her engagement to Lev.
Fabrizio Guido as Jackie Moreno—and later Jackie Gordon
Fabrizio Guido plays Jackie, who begins as a popcorn vendor and devoted Waves fan. His enthusiasm and willingness to work gradually draw him into the organization, giving the series one of its clearest outsider-to-insider storylines.
Netflix’s Season 2 material refers to Jackie as a newly discovered youngest Gordon sibling, bringing him more directly into the family’s complicated power structure. His responsibilities also expand as he tries to balance the demands of the organization with his relationship with Sofia, played by Marissa Reyes.
Toby Sandeman as Marcus Winfield
Toby Sandeman plays Marcus Winfield, a decorated Waves star with championship rings, Olympic gold medals and multiple All-Star appearances. The problem is not whether Marcus has achieved enough; it is that his extraordinary success has left him disengaged.
Recommended Free Tools
Isla tries to reignite Marcus’s motivation and leadership. His storyline asks what happens to a player who has already reached the highest levels of the sport but is no longer emotionally invested in carrying a struggling team.
Chet Hanks as Travis Bugg
Chet Hanks portrays Travis Bugg, the Waves’ point guard and a part-time rapper. Travis’s disruptive behavior causes problems on and off the court, and Netflix describes him as unreliable even though he remains a valuable player when the team needs him.
Rank #4
In Season 2, Travis is described as newly sober and using app-based brain games. That detail reflects the show’s broader approach to its athletes: the players are sources of comedy, but they also receive continuing personal storylines beyond their performances during games.
Season 1 supporting cast
The first season also includes Uche Agada as Dyson Gibbs, a Waves-connected player whose underdog story becomes more important in the second season. Other supporting performers include Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Roberto Sanchez as board leader Stephen Ramirez. Netflix’s original series overview also identifies the wider supporting presence of Guido, Sandeman and Hanks within the Waves organization. Netflix’s announcement for the series provides additional Season 1 cast context.

Buss’s involvement helps explain the series’ unusually specific professional-basketball setting. The show draws from the experience of a woman running a major basketball organization, but it builds its own fictional franchise, family history and characters around that idea. The Los Angeles Waves should not be confused with the real Los Angeles Lakers.
