What Riff Raff does in the story
Riff Raff initially appears to serve Dr. Frank-N-Furter at the remote castle. He works alongside his sister, Magenta, and helps establish the unsettling atmosphere that greets Brad and Janet after their car breaks down.
His function changes as the plot develops. He is not merely household staff or comic decoration. He observes the disorder around Frank-N-Furter’s experiment, participates in the castle’s conspiratorial machinery, and ultimately reveals that he and Magenta have a larger purpose. The official production notes describe them as extraterrestrials whose mission is connected to the castle and its visitors.
After Frank-N-Furter’s experiment and behavior are judged a failure, Riff Raff and Magenta take control. Riff Raff’s final position is therefore closer to servant, conspirator, and mission commander than to a conventional villain. His late-story intervention reframes what the audience has seen: the castle is not simply a decadent household but the setting for an alien operation.
