How this Grey’s Anatomy wealth ranking was compiled
This is an estimate-based ranking of notable cast members, not a complete list of every actor ever credited on Grey’s Anatomy. It focuses on principal performers, original cast members, recurring actors and major later-generation stars whose connection to the series was substantial and whose wealth has been publicly estimated.
- Figures: approximate U.S. dollar estimates from publicly available celebrity-wealth reporting.
- Scope: notable cast members across the show’s different generations, rather than every guest star.
- Meaning: net worth is not the same as salary, career earnings, cash on hand or confirmed investable assets.
- Limitations: estimates may incorporate real estate, businesses, residuals, producing income and other assets. They are not audited financial statements.
Celebrity Net Worth says its figures are estimates assembled from public sources and, in some cases, private tips. Other outlets sometimes publish different numbers. That matters particularly for Chandra Wilson and Katherine Heigl, whose estimates vary across publications. The ranking below should therefore be read as a snapshot, not a legally or financially definitive scoreboard.

1. Patrick Dempsey — approximately $85 million
Patrick Dempsey is the narrow estimated leader among the notable Grey’s Anatomy cast members considered here. Celebrity Net Worth places his wealth at approximately $85 million.
Dempsey’s fortune is not explained by his hospital drama salary alone. His long-running role as neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd, known to viewers as McDreamy, provided a major television platform, while film work, producing, endorsements and motorsport activity broadened his income. He has also built a public profile around racing, an interest that became part of his professional identity rather than merely a private hobby.
Celebrity Net Worth’s salary history for the show places Dempsey’s peak episode fee at approximately $350,000. That figure should be treated as a reported historical estimate, not a current or fully documented contract term. It also does not tell us how much of his television compensation ultimately became wealth after taxes, representation costs, spending and investment performance.
2. Ellen Pompeo — approximately $80 million
Ellen Pompeo is estimated at approximately $80 million, putting her close enough to Dempsey that the top position should not be treated as settled fact. A five-million-dollar difference between two public estimates is much less precise than it appears because neither figure is an audited balance sheet.
Pompeo’s financial advantage came from an unusually valuable combination of longevity, title-character status and negotiating leverage. She played Meredith Grey for the show’s central era and remained its defining performer long after many original cast members had departed. She also took on producing responsibilities, which gave her a source of compensation beyond acting.
Celebrity Net Worth reports that a later Grey’s Anatomy package paid Pompeo roughly $575,000 per episode with backend participation. The same reporting estimated that her annual compensation exceeded $20 million during the height of that arrangement. Those are reported package figures, not proof of her current yearly income, but they help explain why Pompeo is so close to Dempsey at the top of this list.
Why Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo are effectively too close to call
The safest conclusion is that Dempsey is narrowly estimated to be the richest, not that his actual liquid wealth is definitively greater than Pompeo’s. Both figures come from the same broad public-estimate ecosystem, and private holdings, property values, taxes, investments, contracts and business interests are not fully disclosed.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPompeo’s case rests on one of television’s longest and most lucrative lead-actor arrangements, along with producing and backend participation. Dempsey combines a major network television run with film, producing, endorsements and racing-related activity. A new contract, sale of property, business valuation or revised source estimate could easily change the order.
3. Katherine Heigl — approximately $50 million
Katherine Heigl is estimated at approximately $50 million. Her position is a reminder that a cast member’s wealth can be driven by the career that follows a hit television series.
Heigl played surgical intern Izzie Stevens during the show’s early breakout years, but her reported wealth is not simply a measure of her Grey’s Anatomy earnings. Film salaries and subsequent television work contributed substantially. Celebrity Net Worth also identifies her Badlands Ranch pet-nutrition business as an important part of her financial picture.
The figure is not uncontested. Hello Magazine has published a lower estimate, which illustrates why Heigl’s exact placement should be described as a current public estimate rather than a confirmed total.

4. Sandra Oh — approximately $25 million
Sandra Oh is estimated at approximately $25 million, according to estimates reported by Parade and Hello Magazine. The relative consistency between those two outlets makes this one of the more stable mid-to-upper-tier figures in the snapshot, although it remains an estimate.
Oh’s Cristina Yang became one of the series’ most influential characters, and her later work in prestige television and film extended her earning power beyond the medical drama. Parade has reported that her late-period Grey’s Anatomy compensation was in the approximate range of $8 million to $9 million per season. Her exact contracts are private, so that range should not be converted into a precise lifetime earnings calculation.
Rank #2
5. Chandra Wilson — approximately $20 million
Chandra Wilson is publicly estimated at approximately $20 million. She has played Miranda Bailey since the show’s first season, making her one of its longest-serving performers.
Wilson’s career value extends beyond acting. Her Grey’s Anatomy work has included directing, producing and co-executive producing, and those credits can create different compensation opportunities from a standard acting role. Her broader television and stage career also contributes to the estimate.
Older media reports have placed Wilson’s wealth lower than the newer Celebrity Net Worth figure. The responsible wording is therefore that she is currently publicly estimated at about $20 million, not that the amount is established fact.
6. Kate Walsh — approximately $20 million
Kate Walsh is also estimated at approximately $20 million. Her Grey Sloan connection began with Addison Montgomery, a character important enough to lead into the spin-off Private Practice.
That spin-off significantly expanded Walsh’s television footprint. Her income base also includes film, television and other long-running acting work outside the two medical dramas. With the estimate tied at Wilson’s level, there is no meaningful basis for claiming that one has more actual wealth than the other.
7. Justin Chambers — approximately $18 million
Justin Chambers is estimated at approximately $18 million, largely reflecting his long run as pediatric surgeon Alex Karev and his work before and beyond the series.

Audacy reported that Chambers was earning approximately $375,000 per episode before leaving Grey’s Anatomy. A high late-career episode rate helps explain why his estimated wealth remains above that of several actors who joined the ensemble later, even though Chambers departed the show in 2020.
As with the other salary figures in this article, the reported rate is not the same as total compensation. Episode fees can exclude or separately account for bonuses, producing arrangements, residuals, taxes and representation costs.
8. Kevin McKidd — approximately $14 million
Kevin McKidd is estimated at approximately $14 million. He joined the show as trauma surgeon Owen Hunt and accumulated a substantial episode count over many seasons.
McKidd’s financial profile is broader than his acting salary. He has directed episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, worked as a musician and performed voice roles. Directing and other creative credits can add income and professional leverage, although public estimates do not show exactly how much each activity contributes.
9. James Pickens Jr. — approximately $13 million
James Pickens Jr. is estimated at approximately $13 million. As Richard Webber, he has been a central presence across the show’s entire run.
His wealth estimate also reflects a long television career outside Grey’s Anatomy, including work associated with The X-Files, Roseanne and other productions. Celebrity Net Worth lists a historical Grey’s Anatomy episode estimate of approximately $125,000, but that should not be presented as his current contract rate. The number is useful only as historical context.
10. Jesse Williams — approximately $12 million
Jesse Williams is estimated at approximately $12 million. He played Jackson Avery, a major later-generation character whose storyline connected the hospital’s established physicians with the Harper Avery medical dynasty.
Williams’ public work includes acting, directing and activism-related projects. Those activities are relevant to his overall career profile, but a net-worth estimate cannot tell us which projects produced the largest return or how much of the reported total remains in liquid assets.

The next entries are separated by relatively small estimated amounts. At this level, the apparent order is especially vulnerable to revised estimates, undisclosed assets and differences in how publications value property or business interests.
11. Sara Ramirez — approximately $5 million
Sara Ramirez is estimated at approximately $5 million. Ramirez played orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres and became one of the show’s most important later additions.
The estimate includes more than television acting. Ramirez has worked on Broadway, sung professionally, produced and appeared in other television projects. Those credits make the figure a broader career estimate rather than a simple calculation based on the salary for playing Callie.
12. Caterina Scorsone — approximately $5 million
Caterina Scorsone is estimated at approximately $5 million. Her role as Amelia Shepherd connected Grey’s Anatomy with Private Practice, and she also appeared in Station 19.
Those related series gave Scorsone a sustained presence in the franchise and helped make television the central driver of her publicly estimated wealth.
13. Camilla Luddington — approximately $5 million
Camilla Luddington is estimated at approximately $5 million. She plays Jo Wilson, one of the show’s significant later-generation doctors.
Celebrity Net Worth’s June 3, 2026 update also points to Luddington’s voice and motion-capture work as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider video-game trilogy. That is an important distinction: her overall career includes a major interactive-media role, not only her television salary.
14. T. R. Knight — approximately $4 million
T. R. Knight is estimated at approximately $4 million. His early role as George O’Malley made him part of the original ensemble, while Broadway work and later television appearances added to his career outside the show.

His lower placement compared with several long-serving colleagues should not be interpreted as a measure of artistic importance. It mainly reflects the limits of publicly reported wealth estimates and the different lengths and commercial paths of the actors’ careers.
15. Sarah Drew — approximately $3 million
Sarah Drew is estimated at approximately $3 million. She played April Kepner and also had a notable pre- and post-Grey’s Anatomy career, including her work on Everwood.
Because Drew’s public estimate is close to the figure reported for Eric Dane at the time of his death, the two should not be treated as precisely ranked by a meaningful financial difference.

Eric Dane’s entry requires different wording from the others. Celebrity Net Worth reported that Dane died on February 19, 2026, and placed his wealth at approximately $3 million at the time of his death.

Estate structure, debts, liabilities, taxes, property valuations and the timing of the estimate can all affect the number. Dane’s role as Mark Sloan, or McSteamy, was an important part of Grey’s Anatomy, but his total career also included other television and film work.
For that reason, this figure should not be casually compared with the current estimates listed for living cast members.
Rank #4
17. Isaiah Washington — approximately $500,000
Isaiah Washington has the lowest public estimate in this selected group, at approximately $500,000. He played Preston Burke during the show’s early years and later worked on The 100, in films and as a director.
This is also one of the least independently corroborated figures in the ranking. It should be read with more caution than the higher estimates, not as proof that Washington’s complete financial position is exactly $500,000. Public wealth pages can miss private assets, liabilities, family arrangements and income that is not widely reported.
What the ranking does—and does not—measure
Net worth is not salary
An actor can earn millions of dollars and still have a much smaller net-worth estimate after taxes, commissions, legal costs, mortgages, business expenses, investment losses or personal spending. Conversely, a person’s net worth can rise through property appreciation or a private business without producing a high annual salary.
Longevity matters, but so does leverage
Staying on a network series for many seasons can create substantial cumulative income, residuals and negotiating power. Pompeo and Wilson benefited from unusually long runs. Dempsey and Chambers also had high-profile roles with reported late-career episode rates. But the largest advantage often comes when an actor combines a long run with producing, backend participation, ownership or work outside the series.
The Grey’s Anatomy universe can multiply opportunities
Roles that carried into Private Practice or connected with Station 19 created additional franchise exposure. Walsh and Scorsone are examples of performers whose financial stories cannot be understood by looking only at their original Grey’s Anatomy episodes.
Outside businesses and media matter
Heigl’s Badlands Ranch, Luddington’s video-game work, Dempsey’s racing and the Broadway and music credits of Ramirez show why a cast wealth ranking is not a television-pay ranking. The show may provide the platform, but later businesses and unrelated entertainment work can determine where an actor ultimately lands.

Methodological bottom line
Patrick Dempsey is the narrow estimated leader at about $85 million, with Ellen Pompeo close behind at about $80 million. Katherine Heigl is the clear third-place estimate because her post-series film work and Badlands Ranch business add substantially to her television career. Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson and Kate Walsh form the next tier, followed by a group whose rankings are increasingly difficult to separate with confidence.
These figures can change when a source updates its estimate or when new information emerges about a contract, property, business valuation, investment or estate. The most accurate way to describe the list is therefore Grey’s Anatomy cast members ranked by currently reported public wealth estimates—not a definitive disclosure of anyone’s private finances.

Is Patrick Dempsey definitely the richest Grey’s Anatomy actor?
Patrick Dempsey is the narrow estimated leader, at approximately $85 million, compared with Ellen Pompeo’s approximately $80 million. Because both figures are public estimates rather than audited financial statements, the ranking should not be treated as definitive.
Does an actor’s estimated net worth equal their Grey’s Anatomy salary?
No. Net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities and is not the same as salary or lifetime career earnings. Public estimates may include property, businesses, residuals and other assumptions, while excluding or misvaluing private assets and debts.
Why is Eric Dane listed as being worth approximately $3 million at the time of his death?
Eric Dane’s approximately $3 million figure is reported as an estimate at the time of his death on February 19, 2026. It may be affected by estate structure, liabilities, taxes and timing, so it should not be compared casually with living actors’ current wealth estimates.
Which Grey’s Anatomy cast members are included in the ranking?
The scope is limited to prominent principal, original, recurring and major later-generation performers with a meaningful connection to the series and a public wealth estimate. Including every guest star would bring in actors whose fortunes may have little to do with Grey’s Anatomy.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Patrick Dempsey is narrowly estimated to be the richest notable Grey’s Anatomy cast member at approximately $85 million, followed by Ellen Pompeo at approximately $80 million. The gap is too uncertain to treat as definitive, and every figure in the ranking is an estimate rather than an audited measure of liquid wealth.
