Will (original title: Wil) turns World War II suspense into a story about the compromises of ordinary civic life under occupation. Set in Antwerp at the beginning of the German occupation, this 2023 Belgian historical drama follows Wilfried Wils, an auxiliary policeman caught between the authorities he works alongside and the resistance activity he sympathizes with. That position makes the film unusually bleak: there is no easy distance from the system, and almost every attempt to survive carries a moral cost.

Will (original title: Wil) is a 2023 Belgian historical drama about the moral compromises of life under Nazi occupation. Set in Antwerp at the beginning of World War II, it follows Wilfried Wils, an auxiliary policeman whose job brings him into contact with the German authorities while his personal sympathies draw him toward resistance activity.

That premise makes Will a particularly severe kind of WWII thriller. It is not primarily a battlefield film, a spy adventure, or a clean story of heroic resistance. Its suspense comes from ordinary civic life becoming morally dangerous: police work, public order, institutional pressure, fear, coercion, and the need to survive inside an occupation system.

A WWII thriller built around moral compromise

Wilfried Wils is not an outsider looking in at the occupation. As an auxiliary policeman in Antwerp, he is embedded in the machinery that helps keep the occupied city functioning. At the same time, he is surrounded by people whose choices pull in different directions—toward collaboration, resistance, or whatever compromise might allow them to survive another day.

The film’s central tension is therefore not simply whether Wils is “good” or “bad.” It asks what happens when every available choice carries a cost. Cooperation can become complicity. Silence can protect one person while endangering another. Resistance can be morally urgent and personally catastrophic. Even an apparently practical decision may leave permanent damage behind.

This is what makes the film feel so bleak. The pressure does not come only from direct violence. It comes from institutions, orders, surveillance, fear of denunciation, and the knowledge that civilians can be swept up in round-ups or punished for choices they did not make. The story’s darkness is rooted in moral injury as much as physical danger.

Why Antwerp matters

Antwerp gives Will a local, civic-scale perspective on World War II. Rather than presenting the occupation only through generals, soldiers, or resistance leaders, the film focuses on how it reshapes a city and the people responsible for policing it.

That setting places Wils at an especially uncomfortable intersection. He is close enough to the occupying authorities to be useful to them, but close enough to resistance activity to understand what is at stake. His position turns routine responsibilities into ethical traps. Maintaining order may mean enforcing an unjust order; refusing may expose himself and others to retaliation.

The result is a story about occupation as a system rather than as a distant historical backdrop. The German presence affects work, relationships, public safety, and personal identity. The film’s claustrophobia comes from the sense that there is no safe place outside the system—not even inside one’s own profession.

Collaboration versus resistance, without simple heroes

Wils is caught between an idealistic friend involved in resistance activity and pressure from an SS commander to collaborate. That conflict supplies the film’s narrative engine, but Will is less interested in turning it into a straightforward contest between heroes and villains than in examining the gray, compromised space between them.

The film does not make collaboration harmless or resistance uncomplicated. It shows how power narrows a person’s choices, while also keeping attention on the consequences of those choices. Coercion explains behavior; it does not automatically erase responsibility. That tension is central to the film’s historical and emotional weight.

Viewers looking for a reassuring wartime arc may find Will punishing. Its subject is not the comfort of knowing that the right decision will be rewarded. It is the frightening possibility that a person may recognize the right thing and still be unable to do it without placing someone else in danger.

Is Will based on a true story?

Will is a historical drama adapted from a novel, not a documentary or a confirmed literal reconstruction of one specific historical case. The film is based on Jeroen Olyslaegers’s Dutch-language novel Wil, which presents the fictionalized story of Antwerp policeman Wilfried Wils during the occupation.

That distinction matters. The film draws its force from a real historical environment—Nazi occupation, collaboration, resistance, antisemitic persecution, violence, coercion, and civilian suffering—but the available production and publisher material does not establish that every event shown is a direct re-creation of a documented individual case.

The book behind the film

Olyslaegers’s novel provides the literary foundation for the film’s morally difficult view of occupation. The English translation is by David Colmer, and the English-language edition is published by Pushkin Press. Publisher records list an English paperback edition dated January 4, 2024, at 352 pages, although more than one English-edition ISBN appears in publisher and catalog records.

If you want to read beyond the film, look for Will by Jeroen Olyslaegers book and check the specific ISBN, format, price, and stock before buying. The English edition should be treated as a translated novel, not as a screenplay or an official Netflix tie-in. The book is the stronger choice for readers interested in the interior moral questions that the film adapts: what a compromised witness remembers, what he chooses to reveal, and how survival can become its own burden.

Content warning: why “almost too bleak” is fair

“Almost too bleak to watch” is a critical characterization rather than an objective content rating, but it accurately points to the film’s subject matter and moral atmosphere. Will deals with:

  • resistance activity and retaliation;
  • antisemitic persecution;
  • beatings, violence, coercion, and destruction;
  • round-ups and the danger faced by civilians; and
  • the lasting psychological consequences of morally compromised survival.

The film’s bleakness is not simply a matter of how many violent scenes it contains. Its more unsettling idea is that a person can become implicated through work, fear, silence, or an attempt to protect someone close to them. There are few clean moral exits, and the story does not promise that good intentions will prevent terrible consequences.

Where to watch Will

Netflix lists Will among its World War II titles and presents it as a Dutch-language Belgian historical war drama. Will is available through Netflix in markets where the title is currently listed. Streaming catalogs are regional and can change, so check the Netflix catalog for your country rather than assuming that a listing in one market guarantees availability everywhere, including the United States.

The film’s original language is Dutch, so viewers should also check the available subtitle and dubbing options in their local Netflix listing.

Who should watch it?

Will is a strong choice for viewers who prefer WWII films about occupation, civilian life, ethical compromise, and the pressures placed on people working inside authoritarian systems. It will appeal more to audiences interested in moral and historical drama than to viewers seeking a conventional action thriller or an uncomplicated resistance story.

If you are sensitive to stories involving Nazi persecution, antisemitic violence, coercion, and civilian round-ups, approach it with caution. Its intensity comes from sustained moral pressure, not just suspenseful plot mechanics.

Verdict: Will is a grim, morally claustrophobic Belgian WWII drama that turns the occupation of Antwerp into a story about compromised institutions and impossible choices. It is not a documentary and should not be marketed as a true-story reconstruction, but its historical setting gives its fictional drama considerable weight. For viewers willing to endure its darkness, the film offers a serious examination of how ordinary civic roles can become entangled with oppression.
