This is the coroner’s public formulation. It does not identify a sudden heart attack, an overdose, alcohol poisoning, or another specific event as the official cause of death.
What is dilated cardiomyopathy?
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle. The heart’s chambers become enlarged, and the muscle may become stretched or thinner. As a result, the heart can lose some of its ability to contract and pump blood effectively.
The condition can contribute to heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms and other potentially serious complications. In Michael’s case, it was one of the conditions identified in the postmortem report. The public coroner’s statement does not provide a detailed account of how long he had the condition or exactly how it affected him before his death.
What is myocarditis?
Myocarditis means inflammation of the heart muscle, also called the myocardium. Inflammation can interfere with the heart’s pumping ability and may be associated with symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness or a rapid or irregular heartbeat.

The coroner listed myocarditis alongside dilated cardiomyopathy. However, the public statement did not establish what caused the inflammation in Michael’s case. It did not say that the myocarditis was viral, medication-related, drug-induced or caused by any other particular trigger.
What did “fatty liver” mean in the coroner’s finding?
Fatty liver means that excess fat was found in the liver. It can occur for different reasons, and the term by itself does not establish a specific underlying cause.
The public coroner’s statement did not say whether Michael’s fatty liver was associated with alcohol, metabolic disease, medication, another medical condition or a different mechanism.
