Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner’s children have spoken publicly in limited ways after the couple’s deaths, with Jake Reiner later describing the devastating moment he learned that both parents were dead. The legal case has since advanced to a Los Angeles County grand-jury indictment, but the allegations remain unresolved in court.
The criminal case over the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner remains unresolved. Their children, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially asked for privacy in a joint statement. Jake later described the shock of losing both parents in a personal essay, while Romy has not been represented in the available reporting as having published a full separate account.
What happened at the Reiners’ Brentwood home
On December 14, 2025, Los Angeles police responding to a death investigation found two people dead at Rob and Michele Reiner’s home in Brentwood. The LAPD later identified the victims as Robert Reiner and Michele Reiner and said the deaths were homicides.
Nick Reiner, the couple’s 32-year-old son, was arrested later that evening and booked on suspicion of murder. On December 16, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced two murder counts against him. The filing included a multiple-murder special-circumstance allegation and alleged that he personally used a knife.

Those allegations are not findings of guilt. The District Attorney’s Office emphasized that the charges were allegations and that Nick Reiner was presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
What Jake and Romy Reiner said
Jake and Romy’s first public response was a joint statement issued in December 2025. They described the loss of their parents as unimaginable, thanked people for the condolences and support they had received, and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they grieved.
The statement was brief. It did not provide a public account of what led to the deaths or discuss a possible motive, and the family has not been represented as confirming speculation about either.
Jake’s personal account of the loss
On April 24, 2026, Jake published a more detailed personal essay. He wrote that he was attending a celebration of life for a friend when Romy called to tell him that their father had died. Minutes later, she called again to tell him that their mother was also dead.

Jake described the aftermath as a “living nightmare” and wrote that losing both parents at once was too devastating to comprehend. His essay focused on his own experience of grief rather than presenting a complete account of the criminal investigation or speaking for every member of the family.
Jake also indicated that Romy would tell her own story in her own way and in her own time. That distinction matters: his essay should not be treated as Romy’s testimony or as a detailed statement jointly endorsed by the entire family.
In May 2026, Jake returned to his Dodgers podcast. He thanked listeners for their support and said he had spent a long time thinking about how to write about his parents before returning to the program.
On August 10, entertainment reporting noted that Romy appeared in her father’s final show. The appearance reflected public remembrance of Rob Reiner, but it was not reported as a detailed statement about the killings.

The latest legal development: a grand-jury indictment
On August 12, 2026, reporting from the Associated Press said that a Los Angeles County grand jury had indicted Nick Reiner on murder charges in the deaths of his parents. The newly unsealed indictment reportedly adds the allegation that he was lying in wait before the attacks.
That is a prosecution allegation contained in the indictment, not an adjudicated fact. An indictment means the criminal case is proceeding on the specified charges; it does not mean the defendant has been convicted.
The available reporting on the indictment contained few additional details. As of August 12, it had not established a trial date, a verdict, a change of plea, or a final decision on whether prosecutors would seek the death penalty. The case remains pending.
What remains unknown
- Motive: The reporting reviewed for this article does not establish a motive. Claims about family dynamics, mental health, substance use, or the reasons for the alleged attack would be speculation unless supported by a filed document or an on-the-record official statement.
- Sequence of events: Officials and the available reporting have not provided a complete public account of what happened inside the home.
- Outcome: Nick Reiner has been charged and indicted, not convicted. The presumption of innocence remains in effect unless and until the case is resolved in court.
- Further family statements: Jake has shared a personal account, but Romy has not been represented in the sources reviewed as having published a full separate account of the deaths.
Rob Reiner’s film legacy
The public response has also been shaped by Rob Reiner’s unusually influential career. He was an actor and filmmaker whose best-known directing work included This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men.

The Directors Guild of America’s visual-history profile describes This Is Spinal Tap as the project that helped launch Reiner’s directing career and places those films within a defining run of work. Turner Classic Movies announced a January 28, 2026 tribute led by a presentation of The Princess Bride, highlighting Reiner’s major films from This Is Spinal Tap through The American President.
Michele Singer Reiner also deserves to be identified in her own right. Coverage has described her as a photographer, producer, and advocate, rather than simply as Rob Reiner’s wife. The family’s public statements have emphasized the couple’s importance as parents as well as their public careers.

The Reiners’ public comments have been limited and carefully personal: a joint request for privacy, followed months later by Jake’s account of receiving the news and trying to process the loss. The indictment adds a new legal allegation, but it does not answer every question about the deaths and does not resolve the criminal case.
