Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 still has no confirmed U.S. release date as of August 11, 2026. Its planned August 16, 2024 theatrical opening was withdrawn after the first chapter’s disappointing box-office performance. Although the sequel screened at the Venice Film Festival, that was a limited festival premiere—not a general theatrical, streaming, digital, or home-video release.
As of August 11, 2026, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 still has no publicly confirmed U.S. release date. The film is not known to have been canceled, but it has been in release limbo since Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema withdrew it from its planned August 16, 2024 theatrical opening. It later screened at the Venice Film Festival, but that limited festival premiere was not a normal theatrical, streaming, digital, or home-video release.
What happened to Horizon: Chapter 2?
Chapter 2 was originally scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on August 16, 2024, less than two months after Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 debuted on June 28. On July 10, 2024, Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema announced that they were removing the sequel from that date.
The companies said they wanted to give audiences more time to discover the first film through its theatrical run, premium video-on-demand release, and eventual Max debut. That announcement did not call the sequel canceled, and it suggested that a new release strategy might follow. However, no replacement U.S. date was announced afterward.

Nearly two years after the original release plan, the result is effectively an indefinite delay: the movie has been completed or substantially completed, but no distributor has publicly announced when ordinary U.S. audiences can watch it.
Has Horizon: Chapter 2 technically been released?
It has been shown, but it has not been commercially released in the usual sense. The film had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. La Biennale’s official program listed it as a 190-minute, out-of-competition screening.
A festival screening is a limited exhibition for festival attendees. It is different from:
- a nationwide theatrical release;
- a digital rental or purchase;
- a subscription-streaming launch;
- a DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K release; or
- a regular international release available to the general public.
That distinction explains why both statements can be true: Chapter 2 premiered at Venice, and the film still has not “come out” for most viewers.

Why was the original release date pulled?
The immediate business context was the performance of Chapter 1. Box Office Mojo records approximately $38.8 million worldwide for the first chapter, including about $29.0 million in the United States. That result was weak relative to the scale of the two-film production commitment and made the original plan—releasing two exceptionally long Western films only weeks apart—harder to sustain.
The July 2024 announcement framed the withdrawal as an effort to help Chapter 1 reach a larger audience, not as a permanent cancellation of the sequel. The first film needed more time to move through theaters, premium video on demand, and streaming before the studio attempted to launch the next chapter.
Other legal and business complications have been reported as possible factors. They should not, however, be presented as the confirmed single reason for the delay. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Chapter 2 was pulled after the first film underperformed, and no subsequent distributor announcement has supplied a new commercial date.
The original Horizon release plan
Kevin Costner conceived Horizon: An American Saga as a continuing, multi-chapter Western. The first two chapters were initially positioned as a closely connected theatrical event:

- June 28, 2024: Chapter 1 opened in U.S. theaters.
- August 16, 2024: Chapter 2 was scheduled to follow.
The gap between the planned releases was fewer than seven weeks. That unusually compressed schedule assumed that the first film would quickly build momentum and that audiences would return for the continuation before interest faded.
Instead, the first film’s disappointing box office led the companies to reconsider the timing. Chapter 1 later became available through digital purchase and rental options, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced its Max debut for August 23, 2024. Chapter 2 did not follow with a comparable U.S. Max announcement or a confirmed transactional-video, disc, or 4K date.

Where can you watch Horizon: Chapter 2?
There is no confirmed, ordinary U.S. viewing option for Chapter 2 as of August 11, 2026. In particular, there is no confirmed date for:
- a U.S. theatrical release;
- Max or another subscription-streaming service;
- digital rental or purchase;
- DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD; or
- a general U.S. home-viewing release.
Readers should be cautious with retailer placeholders, country-specific database entries, social-media claims, and unverified international listings. None of those should be treated as a confirmed U.S. release date unless Territory Pictures, New Line Cinema, Warner Bros., or another authorized distributor makes an announcement.

How to watch while waiting
The practical option is to catch up with Chapter 1. It has already moved beyond its original theatrical window and is available through digital viewing options and physical home video, although availability and pricing can vary by territory and date.
- Physical media: Look for the Chapter 1 Blu-ray if you want a permanent copy.
- Premium physical media: Collectors can look for the Chapter 1 4K Blu-ray, where available.
- Digital viewing: You may be able to watch Chapter 1 digitally through a rental or purchase listing, subject to your location and the platform’s current catalog.
Buying or renting Chapter 1 does not provide access to Chapter 2. It is simply the currently available way to understand the story before any future sequel release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Is Horizon: Chapter 2 canceled?
There is no reliable basis for calling it permanently canceled. “Indefinitely delayed,” “shelved,” and “in release limbo” are more accurate descriptions of the current evidence. The film has been publicly screened and has continued to be described in reporting as completed, but the lack of a replacement date means its commercial future remains uncertain.
A definitive cancellation would require an official statement or similarly conclusive documentation. No such confirmation is established by the available research.

What would count as a real release announcement?
A genuine update should identify an authorized distributor and a specific territory, format, and date. For a U.S. release, readers should look for an announcement covering at least one of the following:
- a theatrical distributor and opening date;
- a confirmed Max or other streaming-service launch;
- an official digital-rental or purchase date; or
- an announced DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K release.
Until then, the accurate answer remains that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 has been delayed indefinitely after its August 16, 2024 date was withdrawn. Its Venice screening proves that the film has been shown, not that it received a normal public release.
