Where We’ll Always Have Summer begins
We’ll Always Have Summer is the third and final book in Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy. It begins after Conrad has previously told Belly to choose his brother Jeremiah. Belly follows that advice—or tries to—and she and Jeremiah have been together for roughly two years.
By the beginning of the novel, Belly and Jeremiah are no longer in a casual teenage relationship. They are discussing a permanent future and moving toward marriage. Why Belly and Jeremiah’s relationship falls apart
The immediate crisis is Jeremiah’s infidelity during a period when he and Belly were technically separated. Jeremiah argues that the relationship was on a break, but Belly does not view the situation as harmless or easily excusable. For her, the discovery damages the trust on which their plans for marriage depend.

The planned wedding is connected to the Cousins beach house, making the ceremony feel tied to the summers and memories that have shaped all three books. But the location also places Belly’s current relationship directly beside the history she shares with Conrad.
Conrad learns about Jeremiah’s infidelity and reacts angrily. During the confrontation that follows, Conrad admits that he still loves Belly. Instead, Belly tells Jeremiah about Conrad’s confession. Jeremiah then makes her confront the question she has been avoiding: does she still love Conrad? Belly cannot honestly say that she does not. That realization makes it impossible for her to go through with the wedding while pretending that her feelings are settled.
The wedding is called off before the ceremony begins. The decisive issue is not merely Conrad’s declaration. It is Belly’s recognition that marrying Jeremiah while part of her remains committed to Conrad would be dishonest and unfair to both of them.
Who does Belly choose?
Belly ultimately chooses Conrad. However, the choice does not lead to an immediate, uncomplicated relationship.
After the wedding is canceled, Jeremiah and Belly part ways. Conrad also leaves rather than remain in a situation that appears to be closing the door between him and Belly. The three characters do not move straight from the wedding crisis into a settled happily-ever-after. Their separation gives Belly and Conrad time to grow beyond the emotions and patterns that defined their adolescence.
This distinction matters when interpreting the ending. Conrad is not simply rewarded for confessing his love, and Jeremiah is not reduced to a villain because the relationship ends.
