Short answer: Fallout is a live-action Prime Video series that tells an original story in Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic game universe. Season 1 begins around Los Angeles in 2296, Season 2 expands into the Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas, and Season 3 is confirmed and filming in Los Angeles without an announced release date as of August 12, 2026.

This guide covers the setting, story premise, cast, creators, episode information, game connections, viewing options, and confirmed Season 3 news. It includes major premise spoilers for the first two seasons but does not reproduce every plot twist.

What the Fallout TV series is about

Fallout is a live-action Prime Video series set in the post-apocalyptic universe created by Bethesda’s role-playing games. It is not a scene-by-scene adaptation of Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, or any other numbered game. Instead, it tells an original story in the established world, using the franchise’s Vaults, factions, retro-futurist technology, mutated creatures, dark humor, and moral uncertainty.

The story begins around Los Angeles in the year 2296—219 years after the nuclear apocalypse. Its central contrast is between people raised in underground Vaults and the generations of survivors who have built lives on the irradiated surface. Season 2 takes the story east into the Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas. Season 3 is confirmed and was filming in Los Angeles as of June 2026, but Amazon had not announced a premiere date as of August 12, 2026.

The setting: Los Angeles, 2296, and a divided world

The series opens in Los Angeles roughly two centuries after nuclear war transformed civilization. The date matters because the show is not depicting the immediate aftermath of the bombs. The surface world has had generations to change, and its communities, economies, violence, and political ideas have developed in the ruins of pre-war America.

Below ground, the Vaults preserve carefully controlled versions of pre-war life. They are presented as more than nuclear shelters. The show uses them to explore privilege, social engineering, corporate power, conformity, and the limits of a society that has been protected from the consequences of the outside world.

Above ground, survival is shaped by radiation, scarcity, trade, violence, mutated wildlife, and rival ideas about how society should be rebuilt. The result is not a simple division between civilized Vault dwellers and savage outsiders. Both environments have their own systems of control, compromises, and moral failures.

Why the world looks retro-futurist

Fallout imagines the future through the visual language of 1950s and 1960s America. Its cars, robots, computers, advertisements, clothing, civil-defense imagery, and ideas about nuclear power reflect a version of the future that was once imagined as bright, efficient, and technologically manageable.

That optimism becomes unsettling after the apocalypse. Cheerful pre-war design sits beside radiation sickness, improvised weapons, ruined cities, and grotesque mutations. The contrast is one of the franchise’s defining ideas: technological progress did not prevent catastrophe, and nostalgia can conceal the systems that helped create it.

The main characters and cast

Character Actor Role in the story
Lucy MacLean Ella Purnell A Vault dweller whose beliefs about safety, civility, and responsibility are tested when she enters the surface world. Lucy is the clearest newcomer viewpoint into the setting.
The Ghoul / Cooper Howard Walton Goggins A hardened surface survivor with a long history and a pre-war identity as Cooper Howard. His story connects the post-apocalyptic present to the world that existed before the bombs.
Maximus Aaron Moten A character associated with the Brotherhood of Steel. His storyline examines military hierarchy, loyalty, power, and survival.
Hank MacLean Kyle MacLachlan Lucy and Norm’s father, whose history and decisions become central to the family mystery and the wider questions surrounding Vault-Tec.
Norm MacLean Moisés Arias Lucy’s brother, who investigates the Vault system from within and brings a more skeptical perspective to Vault life.

Other recurring characters include Barb Howard, played by Frances Turner; Steph, played by Annabel O’Hagan; and Chet, played by Dave Register. These characters help connect the Vault story, the pre-war timeline, and the show’s surface-level conflicts.

Who makes the series?

Fallout is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Kilter Films in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are executive producers. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner serve as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers, while Todd Howard represents Bethesda’s production team.

Jonathan Nolan directed the first three episodes of Season 1. Amazon’s production material describes Todd Howard as a close collaborator who reviewed scripts and helped the production remain attentive to the established world, tone, and visual language of the games.

The creative team deliberately chose not to adapt one specific game. Todd Howard has explained that the goal was to move the timeline forward and tell a new story rather than reproduce an existing game’s plot. That decision gives the series room to surprise players while preserving familiar elements such as Vault-Tec, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Ghoul archetype, retro-futurism, and the franchise’s mixture of bleakness and absurdity.

Season 1: the Vault, the Ghoul, and the Brotherhood

Season 1 contains eight episodes and follows three main narrative tracks. Lucy leaves the Vault and encounters the reality of the surface. The Ghoul moves through that world as a dangerous and historically layered survivor. Maximus navigates the Brotherhood of Steel, including its hierarchy, expectations, and competing demands of loyalty and self-preservation.

The season gradually connects those personal journeys to the history of Vault-Tec and the pre-war world. Unlike the games, which often leave much of that background for players to investigate, the television series spends substantial time exploring pre-war society and the corporations whose decisions shaped the apocalypse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Season 1 also makes the Vaults’ apparent safety increasingly complicated. The question is not simply whether the surface is dangerous. It is whether the social order preserved underground was ever as benevolent, independent, or honest as its residents believed.

When did Season 1 premiere?

The current Prime Video episode listing dates the Season 1 release to April 10, 2024. Amazon’s earlier launch announcement referred to April 11, which appears to have reflected the announced scheduling rather than the date now displayed on the platform. For the actual platform release, April 10 is the safer date to use.

By the end of the season, Lucy learns damaging information about her father, Hank. That revelation changes the meaning of her Vault upbringing and points the story toward a much larger history involving Vault-Tec and the pre-war world.

Season 2: the Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas

Season 2 continues after the events of the first season and expands the series into the Mojave Wasteland and the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas. This is the show’s most direct geographic connection to the games so far, particularly Fallout: New Vegas.

The connection is important, but the series is not simply adapting New Vegas. The show uses the same broad setting, lore, and franchise context while continuing its own characters and television storyline. Viewers should expect shared locations and ideas rather than a recreation of the game’s quests or a scene-by-scene retelling.

The current Prime Video listing displays eight Season 2 episodes. Its displayed schedule begins with The Innovator on December 16, 2025, and ends with The Strip on February 4, 2026. Those dates describe the platform listing available when this research was checked; regional release timing can differ.

Why New Vegas matters

New Vegas is one of the most politically and thematically distinctive locations in the game franchise. Its appearance gives the television series access to a region shaped by competing powers, contested territory, commerce, and different visions of order after the apocalypse.

Bethesda’s official companion guide for the season makes Fallout: New Vegas the clearest game recommendation for viewers who want to explore the Mojave interactively. The recommendation is geographic and thematic, not evidence that the television series is adapting the game’s exact plot.

Season 3: what has been confirmed

Season 3 is confirmed, and Amazon’s June 19, 2026 update says filming began in Los Angeles in June 2026. The season will return to Prime Video, but no premiere date had been announced in the latest official update available on August 12, 2026.

Returning cast

Amazon lists the following returning performers and characters:

  • Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean
  • Aaron Moten as Maximus
  • Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard and the Ghoul
  • Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean
  • Moisés Arias as Norm MacLean
  • Frances Turner as Barb Howard
  • Annabel O’Hagan as Steph
  • Dave Register as Chet

New cast members

Aaron Paul, Emily Mortimer, Manny Jacinto, and Thomasin McKenzie are joining Season 3. Amazon had not disclosed all of their character roles in the latest announcement, so identities circulating through rumor or fan speculation should not be treated as confirmed.

Audience information

Amazon says the first two seasons have surpassed 100 million viewers worldwide and that the series ranked among Prime Video’s four most-watched seasons during the first 13 weeks after Season 2 began streaming. These are Amazon-reported platform figures, not an independently audited universal audience measurement, so they should be understood in that context.

Where to watch Fallout

Amazon’s current Season 3 guide lists the first two seasons as available on Prime Video. The service is the authoritative distributor identified for the series. Subscription price, catalogue availability, subtitles, dubbing, and release timing can vary by country and can change after publication.

For viewers who prefer physical media, the Prime Video listing also includes DVD and Blu-ray under “Other formats.” A Fallout TV series Blu-ray or DVD can be useful for collectors and viewers who do not want to rely on a changing streaming catalogue, but the exact edition, region, packaging, bonus material, price, and stock should be checked before purchase.

Amazon says Season 3 will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. That is a broad international distribution statement, not a guarantee that every country will receive identical availability or release timing.

Do you need to play the games first?

No. The series was designed to be accessible to people who have never played a Fallout game. Lucy’s introduction to the surface provides a natural entry point, and the major factions and technologies are explained through the story rather than assumed knowledge.

Players will recognize visual references, concepts, creatures, factions, and the franchise’s distinctive tone. However, prior knowledge is optional rather than a prerequisite. The show’s original characters and forward-moving timeline mean that game players are also not simply watching a plot they already know.

Which Fallout game should you play after watching?

Fallout: New Vegas: the closest match to Season 2

Fallout: New Vegas is the most natural recommendation after Season 2 because it is set in the Mojave region and is directly associated with New Vegas. It offers the strongest geographic connection to the television series’ expanded setting, while remaining a separate story with its own characters, factions, and choices.

Fallout 4: a broader modern entry point

Fallout 4 is a secondary recommendation for viewers who want another large, accessible interpretation of the universe. Bethesda’s companion material points to it as a way to explore the franchise’s creatures and technology, including Deathclaws, as well as settlement-building systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fallout 76: an online version of the wider world

Fallout 76 is another way to spend time in the broader franchise, but it is not a direct continuation of the television story. It is best understood as an additional game-world experience rather than a companion required to understand the series.

What makes the series different from the games?

  • It has an original plot. The show shares the setting and franchise DNA but does not adapt one numbered game.
  • It foregrounds the pre-war world. Vault-Tec and the origins of the apocalypse receive more sustained attention than they typically do in the games’ main narratives.
  • It uses multiple viewpoints. Lucy, the Ghoul, and Maximus reveal different forms of privilege, violence, institutional power, and survival.
  • It treats the Vaults as political spaces. They are shelters, but also controlled experiments and symbols of corporate influence.
  • It preserves the tonal contrast. Grim violence and existential danger coexist with absurd advertising, cheerful retro design, and dark comedy.

The bottom line

Fallout is a newcomer-friendly original story in Bethesda’s post-nuclear universe, not a conventional game adaptation. Season 1 establishes the Los Angeles setting and the conflict between Vault life and the surface; Season 2 carries the story into the Mojave and New Vegas; and Season 3 is in production with its release date still unannounced as of August 12, 2026. Prime Video is the place to watch the first two seasons, while Fallout: New Vegas is the most relevant game for exploring the setting introduced in Season 2.
