The Mucutuy siblings are back in family care. Colombia’s ICBF announced on June 18, 2025, that Lesly, Soleiny, Tien and Cristin had returned home after approximately two years under protection and multidisciplinary support. W Radio reported that the children’s maternal aunt received legal custody after officials assessed emotional, cultural and security considerations.
Later reports connected the family with its Indigenous community, but no authoritative public source gives the children’s exact current address, school, health status or daily routine. They are minors and survivors of trauma, so those details should remain private.
What happened to the Mucutuy siblings after the rescue?
The four children survived a Cessna plane crash in Colombia’s Amazon on May 1, 2023. Their mother and the other adult passengers died, but the siblings—Lesly, Soleiny, Tien and Cristin—survived in the rainforest for approximately 40 days. Search teams found them alive on June 9, 2023.
The rescue became notable not only because of the children’s survival, but also because Indigenous trackers worked alongside Colombia’s armed forces during the search. The children were members of an Indigenous community described in public reports with both the spellings Huitoto and Uitoto. Those variations reflect different reporting and language conventions; they should not be read as evidence that the children belonged to different communities.

After they were found, the siblings were taken to Bogotá for medical treatment. They were then placed in the Colombian Family Welfare Institute’s—known as the ICBF—temporary protection system while officials assessed their safety, family circumstances and longer-term care.
Two years of ICBF protection and support
The ICBF said its work with the children involved a multidisciplinary team that included psychologists, nutritionists, social workers and pedagogues. The support was intended to address their physical and emotional recovery while respecting their culture, identity and family connections.
That period lasted roughly two years. It was not simply a matter of finding a relative willing to take the children in. Officials had to evaluate whether the proposed care arrangement was emotionally appropriate, culturally suitable and secure for four children who had survived a traumatic event and lost their mother.
The Procuraduría General de la Nación, Colombia’s public-interest oversight authority, said it followed and accompanied the children’s return to their family. Its involvement reinforces that the reunification was an official child-protection process rather than an informal arrangement announced through social media or television coverage.

Who has custody of the Mucutuy children?
The ICBF announced on June 18, 2025, that Lesly, Soleiny, Tien and Cristin had returned home after their period under protection. The agency described the family as once again being the center of their care.
A contemporaneous report by W Radio provided more detail, reporting that legal custody was transferred to the children’s maternal aunt after technical assessments. The most precise way to state the public record is therefore:
- Official ICBF position: the four siblings returned to their family home after approximately two years of protection and support.
- Media-reported custody arrangement: their maternal aunt became the legal custodian.
- What this means: the children moved into extended-family care rather than remaining in the ICBF’s temporary protection arrangement.
These details do not establish an exact address or a day-to-day account of the family’s life. Because the children are minors and survivors of trauma, responsible reporting should stop at the level of detail made public by authorities and reputable news organizations.
Are the siblings still together?
Public reporting shortly before the formal reunification announcement said the children had remained together, continued their studies and maintained links with their ethnic community while their custody situation was being resolved. The ICBF’s June 2025 announcement then described their return as a family reunification involving all four siblings.

That supports the conclusion that the children returned to family care together. It does not justify claims about their daily routine, school, health or emotional state. No authoritative source located for this article says that the children are “fully recovered” or unaffected by what happened, and those conclusions should not be inferred from the fact that they were reunited with relatives.
What later reports say about their community connections
A December 2025 report in El Tiempo described a Christmas activity involving the Mucutuy family and Indigenous communities in Araracuara, Caquetá. The report referred to the area as the siblings’ territory and supports the broader conclusion that the family remained connected to its Amazonian Indigenous community after reunification.
It does not establish the children’s precise residence, and it does not prove that the children personally attended every activity mentioned in the report. A reference to a community’s territory should not be converted into a specific address, village or travel route.
Why the custody process required formal assessment
The children’s time under ICBF protection also reflected concerns about their safety and family circumstances. In August 2025, Colombian reporting said that Manuel Ranoque—described in different reports as the father or stepfather of some of the children—was sentenced to 32 years in prison for sexually abusing a minor.

That court case is relevant context for understanding why the children’s custody and reunification required formal evaluation. It should not be used to make unsupported claims about the children’s present condition, their relationship with particular relatives or the details of their private lives.
What Netflix’s The Lost Children covers
Netflix’s documentary presents a reconstruction of the survival story and the search operation using testimony and archival material. Its public-interest subject is the crash, the children’s survival, the cooperation between Indigenous trackers and Colombia’s armed forces, and the protection process that followed.
The film is not a reliable window into the children’s present-day private lives. Viewers looking for a “where are they now?” answer should distinguish the documentary’s historical narrative from the later official updates about family care.

The latest reliable public record identified for this article does not provide the siblings’ exact address, current school, current medical or psychological condition, personal social-media accounts or a verified day-by-day description of their lives. Those details are also appropriately private because the children are minors.
