The opening and troupe performances
The episode began with a professional number set to “Kill the Lights” by Whitney Myer. The routine was choreographed by Ray Leeper and was separate from the celebrity competition.
The newly introduced troupe—Carter Williams, Hailey Bills, Onye Stevenson and Jaxon Willard—performed to Tate McRae’s “Just Keep Watching.” That performance was also not one of the 14 scored celebrity routines.
Premiere scores and the judging context
Carrie Ann Inaba missed the premiere because of illness, leaving Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli as the judges scoring the competition dances. As a result, the premiere totals were out of 20 rather than the usual 30-point maximum from three judges.
Rank #2
| Score | Couples receiving that reported total |
|---|---|
| 15/20 | Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas; Robert Irwin and Witney Carson |
| 12/20 | Jen Affleck and Jan Ravnik |
| 9/20 | Corey Feldman and Jenna Johnson; Andy Richter and Emma Slater |
The available recap identifies the two highest reported totals as 15/20 and the two lowest as 9/20. It is important not to compare these numbers directly with later episodes without accounting for the different judging maximum.
