The reported circumstances should not be confused with a formally documented medical cause of death.
Colin was part of Train’s formative lineup and played bass on the band’s first three albums: Train (1998), Drops of Jupiter (2001), and My Private Nation (2003). Those records established the group commercially through songs including “Meet Virginia,” “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me),” and “Calling All Angels.”

What was reported about Charlie Colin’s death?
Colin died in Belgium in May 2024, at age 58. AP reported that his sister confirmed the death and that Colin had been house-sitting in Brussels when he reportedly slipped and fell in a shower. The report attributed the account of the fall to TMZ.
The Los Angeles Times also described the fall while noting that Colin’s family had not publicly provided an official cause of death. Accordingly, the most precise description is that he died after a reported fall while house-sitting in Brussels, rather than a more specific medical explanation that has not been independently documented in the available reporting.

Colin’s role in the formation of Train
Before Train, Colin was connected with guitarist Jimmy Stafford and songwriter-guitarist Rob Hotchkiss through the earlier group Apostles. Colin and Hotchkiss discussed that musical history and the development of Train in a Berklee Today interview.
Colin studied at Berklee College of Music. He also spent a year in Singapore writing and playing jingles before returning to work with the musicians who would help form Train. The early San Francisco lineup brought together singer Pat Monahan, Hotchkiss, Stafford, Colin, and drummer Scott Underwood.
Colin was therefore a founding member, not the sole founder of Train. His bass playing helped provide the rhythmic foundation for a band whose early sound combined pop accessibility with rock instrumentation and singer-songwriter influences.

The Associated Press identifies these as the three Train albums on which Colin played. The second, Drops of Jupiter, was released on March 27, 2001, through Columbia Records, according to Apple Music’s album listing.

Drops of Jupiter and Train’s breakthrough
Train’s self-titled debut had already given the group an important early success with “Meet Virginia.” But Drops of Jupiter expanded the band’s audience and became its defining early release. The title track, “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me),” became one of Train’s signature songs, while the album established the group as a prominent pop-rock act of the early 2000s.
Colin’s recorded legacy is closely tied to that period. Music fans who want to revisit the album can look for Train’s Drops of Jupiter CD or another accurately labeled physical edition. Grammy recognition and signature songs
The Recording Academy’s Charlie Colin artist page lists him among the credited writers and performers associated with “Drops of Jupiter” and “Calling All Angels.” The song “Drops of Jupiter” won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. The album and track also received nominations in several other categories.
“Calling All Angels” received two Grammy nominations at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. These honors should be described carefully: the Best Rock Song award recognized the credited songwriting team, and Colin should not be portrayed as having personally won multiple Grammys. The Recording Academy page lists one win and six nominations associated with him.
Train’s Drops of Jupiter album was certified by the RIAA on March 10, 2021. The RIAA also lists a certification for the “Drops of Jupiter” single dated November 13, 2025; because that certification postdates Colin’s death, it is best treated as a later catalog milestone rather than part of the original 2001 breakthrough.

Why did Charlie Colin leave Train?
Colin left Train in 2003. Retrospective accounts, including the Los Angeles Times obituary report, connected his departure with reported substance-abuse issues and later comments by Pat Monahan about Colin’s struggles.
Public reporting does not justify adding unverified details about treatment, sobriety, private medical history, or the precise circumstances surrounding his departure. The responsible summary is that Colin left Train in 2003 amid reported substance-abuse issues.
Colin’s later music and professional work
Leaving Train did not end Colin’s involvement in music. Music-reference sources associate him with projects including Food Pill, Painbirds, and The Side Deal. He also played bass for Days of the New during a later period. These credits show continued professional activity, although the available documentation does not support presenting those projects as equivalent in commercial scale to Train’s breakthrough years.

Train remembers Charlie Colin
Following news of Colin’s death, Train paid tribute to him in a post on the band’s official social-media account. The tribute described him as an important early member of Train and praised both his bass playing and his guitar work. The Los Angeles Times reproduced the substance of that statement.
The tribute reflects Colin’s place in the band’s history: he was not a member of every era of Train, but he helped build the lineup and sound that produced the group’s first major records. His contribution is most clearly documented through those three albums, his credited association with key songs, and his role in the band’s early development.

Colin’s legacy is inseparable from Train’s rise during the late 1990s and early 2000s. As a founding bassist, he played on the self-titled debut, the Grammy-recognized Drops of Jupiter, and My Private Nation. Those recordings remain the strongest measure of his artistic contribution.

But it is equally incomplete to treat him as a minor footnote. Colin was present when Train was formed, helped shape its early recordings, and performed on the albums that made the band widely known.
