Harrison Butker delivered his controversial commencement address on May 11, 2024, at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, to the school’s Class of 2024. The complete audiovisual record is Benedictine College’s official YouTube video of the event. The National Catholic Register published a full transcript on May 16, 2024, which is useful for searching and checking quotations; the official recording remains the best source for Butker’s delivery, pauses, emphasis, and audience reaction.

The roughly 20-minute address was not only about women and homemaking. Butker spoke about Catholic vocation, marriage, parenthood, masculinity, reproductive ethics, the traditional Latin Mass, President Joe Biden, and Pride Month. Its most disputed passage strongly elevated wifehood, motherhood, and homemaking over career ambition for women, although he did not literally order every woman to leave employment or remain at home.

Audience The college’s Class of 2024, families, faculty, and guests
Length Approximately 20 minutes according to contemporary reporting; the official video is the controlling record

Later response Public criticism and support, institutional statements from Benedictine College and the NFL, and continued support from Butker

How the address is structured

Butker begins by congratulating the graduates and reflecting on how COVID-era disruption affected their schooling and college experience. He then presents the speech as an attempt to diagnose what he sees as social disorder and to offer a way forward for citizens and Catholics.

His answer is an “ordered” life centered on Christ. In practical terms, that means accepting one’s vocation, taking religious obligations seriously, living according to traditional Catholic moral teaching, and resisting what he regards as confusion about sex, gender, family, authority, and the purpose of work.

That framework is important because the address is often summarized solely as a speech about women staying home. The comments about women are central to the controversy, but the larger argument encompasses both sexes, religious worship, fatherhood, reproductive ethics, politics, and the role of Catholic institutions.

1. Vocation: “staying in your lane”

Vocation is one of Butker’s organizing concepts. He tells the graduates that happiness comes from being fully committed to their state in life—what he describes as being “locked in” and “staying in your lane.”

In his presentation, a vocation is not simply a job or a personal passion. It can include lay life, priesthood, religious life, marriage, parenthood, and professional responsibilities. The important question is whether a person accepts and lives that role in service to God rather than treating every decision primarily as an expression of individual preference.

That idea allows Butker to connect otherwise separate parts of the speech. Marriage and parenthood become vocations; professional work must be subordinate to a larger moral purpose; and Catholic worship provides the order he believes modern life has lost.

2. What he said to women about careers, marriage, and homemaking

Addressing the women graduating from Benedictine, Butker congratulates them on their academic achievements. He then says he believes most of them are more excited about marriage and children than about promotions, professional recognition, or career titles.

He uses his wife, Isabelle, as his main example. He describes her conversion to Catholicism, their marriage, motherhood, and homemaking as central to her happiness. He also presents her role in the home as an important reason he has been able to succeed professionally.

Butker characterizes homemaking and primary child-rearing as among the most important roles available to women. That is the passage that led critics to describe the speech as sexist, anti-feminist, or dismissive of women’s education and professional ambitions. The setting—a college graduation celebrating the achievements of young adults—made the contrast especially conspicuous.

What the speech did and did not say

It is inaccurate to summarize the address by saying that Butker ordered all women to abandon employment or stay home. He acknowledges that some women may pursue successful careers. The more precise description is that he strongly ranks wifehood, motherhood, and homemaking above career advancement for women and suggests that most women will find those family roles more meaningful.

That distinction does not remove the controversy. A speaker can avoid issuing a literal universal command while still presenting a strongly prescriptive hierarchy of roles. Supporters heard an affirmation of family life and the value of unpaid domestic work. Critics heard a narrowing of women’s choices after they had just completed higher education.

3. What he said about men, masculinity, and fatherhood

Butker gives male graduates a different but related message. He argues that society has falsely suggested men are unnecessary in the home and in the wider community. He links absent fathers and what he sees as a lack of male leadership to social disorder, dysfunction, and violence.

His model of masculinity emphasizes sacrifice, discipline, responsibility, leadership, and a willingness to do difficult things without apology. He urges men to embrace fatherhood and to accept obligations to their families and communities.

This section should be understood as a normative argument, not as a review of criminological research. Butker presents a relationship between absentee fatherhood and violence that, in the speech’s wording, could be described as a correlation or association. The address does not establish a demonstrated causal conclusion, and readers should not treat the claim as settled evidence simply because it appears in the speech.

4. Abortion, IVF, surrogacy, contraception, and other reproductive issues

Butker places several reproductive and medical issues inside a traditional Catholic moral framework. He criticizes contemporary approaches to:

  • abortion;
  • in vitro fertilization, or IVF;
  • surrogacy;
  • euthanasia;
  • contraception; and
  • reproductive technologies used to control the timing or number of children.

His objection is not limited to one policy proposal. He argues that modern society increasingly treats human reproduction as something to be managed according to personal timing and preference, and he characterizes that approach as an attempt to “play God.” These are his religious and moral claims, presented from a Catholic perspective, rather than neutral descriptions of medical consensus or public policy.

He also criticizes Catholic leaders whom he believes have adopted or transmitted what he calls dangerous gender ideologies. This connects the reproductive discussion to his broader concern about confusion regarding sex, gender, family structure, and authority within both secular society and the Catholic Church.

5. The traditional Latin Mass and the search for order

A substantial portion of the address concerns Butker’s personal devotion to the traditional Latin Mass, often abbreviated as TLM. He says he attends the older form of the Mass because it gives him a sense of order.

Butker specifically frames his preference as more than an attraction to Latin, aesthetics, or the feeling of belonging to an especially informed or superior group. For him, traditional worship is part of a broader response to cultural disorder. He advises the graduates to prioritize Mass even when their parish, priest, or surrounding community is imperfect.

This section shows why reducing the speech to the homemaker controversy leaves out a major part of its religious argument. Butker is also discussing liturgy, tradition, authority, devotion, and the way regular religious practice can shape a person’s understanding of family and society.

6. President Joe Biden and Catholic public identity

Butker criticizes President Joe Biden in connection with abortion and the question of Catholic identity in public life. Contemporary summaries identify Biden’s policies and his public identity as a Catholic among the political subjects addressed.

These remarks should be attributed to Butker. They were his political and religious criticisms, not a statement issued by the Kansas City Chiefs, the National Football League, or Benedictine College as a neutral civic institution.

7. Pride Month and LGBTQ-related criticism

One of the most widely quoted lines comes when Butker refers to “the deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it.” The remark was widely understood as an indirect reference to Pride Month.

Critics described the line as an attack on LGBTQ people and Pride celebrations. It also fits the address’s larger criticism of contemporary ideas about sexuality, gender, and identity. The phrase should remain attributed to Butker; terms such as “homophobic,” “anti-LGBTQ,” or “traditionalist” are interpretive descriptions used by critics or commentators and should not be presented as undisputed narrator findings.

Why the speech became so controversial

The backlash resulted from the combination of subject matter, setting, and speaker. Butker was speaking to college graduates, yet he used the occasion to argue that women’s deepest fulfillment generally lies in marriage, motherhood, and homemaking rather than professional advancement. He also criticized reproductive technologies, challenged modern gender concepts, made an indirect reference to Pride Month, and attacked a sitting president’s Catholic identity and abortion-related politics.

Critics objected that the speech treated traditional gender roles as a hierarchy rather than as one possible way to organize family life. They argued that it discounted women who want careers, women who cannot or do not want to marry or have children, same-sex couples and LGBTQ people, and families whose circumstances do not fit Butker’s model.

Supporters interpreted the same address differently. They saw a defense of religious freedom, Catholic moral teaching, marriage, parenthood, the dignity of domestic labor, male responsibility, and the right of a public figure to express unpopular convictions. Conservative and Catholic audiences in particular treated the speech as a rejection of what they view as cultural pressure to abandon traditional beliefs.

Both reactions are part of the story, but neither should replace the speech itself. The wording matters: the address makes strong prescriptions and value judgments, but some popular summaries go further than its literal language.

The ceremony’s reaction was different from the later public backlash

According to Associated Press reporting, the address received a standing ovation from graduates and attendees at the Benedictine ceremony. Benedictine College’s own post-event coverage presented Butker as the keynote speaker and described the speech as consistent with the school’s Christ-centered mission.

That immediate response should not be confused with a universal reaction from the graduating class or the public. The standing ovation describes the atmosphere reported at the ceremony. The controversy that followed developed through national media coverage, advocacy-group criticism, public commentary, and institutional responses.

Benedictine College President Stephen Minnis later defended the decision to invite Butker. He argued that the college should not give in to cancel-culture pressure and should remain committed to community, faith, scholarship, and its Catholic identity. That is the college president’s institutional position, not an impartial verdict on whether every argument in the speech is correct.

What the NFL said

The National Football League emphasized that Butker delivered the address in his personal capacity and that his views were not those of the league. That distinction mattered because his status as a Kansas City Chiefs player amplified the speech’s reach beyond the Benedictine campus.

The speech was not an NFL address, a Chiefs team statement, or an official league policy announcement. It was a commencement speech by an individual athlete who was invited to speak at a Catholic college.

On August 7, 2024, NFL.com reported that Butker said he had been intentional about making the comments and stood behind what he had said. His later remarks did not present the controversy as an accidental misstatement.

How to verify the speech for yourself

  1. Start with the official video. Find Benedictine College’s YouTube upload of the May 11, 2024 commencement event. This is the best source for tone, timing, applause, pauses, and emphasis.
  2. Use the National Catholic Register transcript for searching. A transcript makes it easier to locate passages about vocation, women, fatherhood, the Mass, reproductive issues, Biden, and Pride Month.
  3. Check disputed quotations against the recording. Transcript punctuation and transcription choices can affect how a sentence appears on the page.
  4. Separate speech content from commentary. Butker’s words, Benedictine’s institutional defense, the NFL’s distancing statement, and critics’ descriptions are different kinds of evidence.
  5. Keep the claims in proportion. Do not turn Butker’s statement about absent fathers and violence into proven causal research, and do not turn his strong preference for homemaking into a literal command that every woman must leave the workforce.

Primary and contextual sources

The most reliable way to understand the address is to use sources for the purposes they can support:

  • Benedictine College’s official YouTube video: the primary audiovisual record of the speech.
  • National Catholic Register transcript, May 16, 2024: the strongest located full-text secondary transcription and a useful search tool.
  • Benedictine College’s event coverage: the college’s own framing of Butker’s appearance and its Christ-centered mission.
  • Stephen Minnis’s defense of the invitation: the president’s institutional response to criticism.
  • Associated Press reporting: reporting on the standing ovation, backlash, and the range of public reaction.
  • NFL statements and NFL.com reporting: the league’s clarification that Butker spoke personally and his later statement that he stood by the address.

These sources should not be treated as interchangeable. The college’s account communicates the institution’s perspective; the NFL’s statement defines the league’s position; news reporting documents reaction; and the video and transcript establish what Butker said.

The Bottom Line

Harrison Butker’s Benedictine College address was a broad argument for a Christ-centered Catholic social order, organized around vocation, traditional family roles, male responsibility, reproductive restrictions, and traditional worship. Its most controversial passage elevated homemaking and motherhood over career ambition for women, but the speech did not literally command every woman to stay home. The ceremony audience gave it a standing ovation, while the address later drew intense criticism and support nationwide. The official Benedictine College video is the best source for the speech itself; the transcript and later statements from the college, NFL, and Butker provide context rather than replacing the primary record.
